Virtual Machines – Remember some of Googles VMS are used for different purposes. Either for an IaaS or PaaS service approach.
Cloud Functions is geared towards a serverless approach and focused on microservices
App Engine is focused on PaaS and can be delivered in two different solutions (Standard or Flexible)

KVM High Availability Regardless of Storage - Gabriel Brascher, VP of Apache ...ShapeBlue
Having High Availability enabled for KVM Hosts can improve greatly the QoS by handling (fence/recover) a problematic Host as well as re-starting its stopped VMs on healthy hosts. However, there is a limitation on CloudStack HA for KVM; it relies mainly on NFS heartbeat script checks. This Talk illustrates how CloudStack HA works for KVM hosts and it presents a way of improving its implementation in a way that KVM HA works with any storage system pluggable on KVM, not just NFS.

User Transparent Service Migration to the CloudTim Mackey
While creating a cloud such as OpenStack is fairly easy, template management is more challenging. In this session we discuss how systems engineering and tooling can be combined to allow legacy infrastructure and virtual machines to be converted to templates without downtime. These templates can then be deployed within the cloud and users migrated with minimal interruption. This deck is as delivered at CloudOpen 2015 in Seattle.
OSCON2014: Understanding Hypervisor Selection in Apache CloudStackTim Mackey
A presented at OSCON 2014, this deck covers the matrix of capabilities each supported hypervisor brings to the Apache CloudStack table when building a cloud.
In this slidecast, Yoram Novick from Maxta describes the company's new software-defined, VM-centric Storage solutions.
"The complexities and high costs of traditional enterprise storage are magnified in the virtual data center," said Yoram Novick, Founder and CEO of Maxta. "After being told repeatedly that expensive storage arrays are the only way to support enterprise applications in virtualized environments, IT organizations finally have an alternative to storage arrays that significantly reduces complexity and cost. Maxta has broken the code for integrating storage and compute into a converged virtual data center."

CloudOpen Japan - Controlling the cost of your first cloudTim Mackey
As presented at CloudOpen Japan in Tokyo in 2015.
Today everyone is talking about clouds, and some are building them, but far fewer are operating successful clouds. In this session we'll examine a variety of paradigm shifts must IT make when moving from a traditional virtualization and management mindset to operating a successful cloud. For most organizations, without careful planning the hype of a cloud solution can quickly overcome its capabilities and existing best practices can combine to create the worst possible cloud scenario -- a cloud which isn't economical to operate, and which is more cumbersome to manage than a traditional virtualization farm. Key topics covered will include; transitioning the operational paradigm, the impact of VM density on operations and network management, and preventing storage cost from outpacing requirements.
The popularity of Virtual SAN is growing daily. Server admins are finally free to aggregate storage in their servers to create a shared storage system that scales with their compute needs. The underlying key to making it all work is networking. All Virtual SAN data flows through it, and correct selection and configuration of networking components will mean the difference between disruptive success or dramatic failure. This session will give deep insight in the do's and don'ts of Virtual SAN networking. Best practices for physical and virtual switch configuration and performance testing will be discussed. Virtual SAN 5.5 and 6.0 will be covered, and the networking differences discussed. Methods of troubleshooting network issues will be covered. For those configuring a Virtual SAN network for the first time, for labs or enterprise scale, this session is a must-see.
Using Packer to Migrate XenServer Infrastructure to CloudStackTim Mackey
When adopting IaaS cloud solutions, one of the biggest challenges will be template management. Creating that first template can easily be more challenging that deploying the cloud software itself. In this presentation two options are presented for template creation, using a kickstart file or cloning a running VM with Packer from packer.io as the core framework.
This presentation was delivered at CloudStack Days 2015 in Austin Texas. Two demos were given. The first demo used an existing XenServer environment to create a golden master from ISO and kickstart file, then automatically upload it to a CloudStack management server for deployment. The second demo cloned a running VM and created a template which was then uploaded to CloudStack. In the case of the running VM, migration occurred without any user interruption. The VM in question was a CentOS 7 image, and the hypervisor for both source infrastructure and CloudStack compute was XenServer based

On-demand self-service. A consumer can unilaterally provision computing capabilities, such as server time and network storage, as needed automatically without requiring human interaction with each service provider
Broad network access. Capabilities are available over the network and accessed through standard mechanisms that promote use by heterogeneous thin or thick client platforms (e.g., mobile phones, tablets, laptops, and workstations).
Resource pooling. The provider’s computing resources are pooled to serve multiple consumers using a multi-tenant model, with different physical and virtual resources dynamically assigned and reassigned according to consumer demand
Rapid elasticity. Capabilities can be elastically provisioned and released, in some cases automatically, to scale rapidly outward and inward commensurate with demand
Measured service. Cloud systems automatically control and optimize resource use by leveraging a metering capability at some level of abstraction appropriate to the type of service
Public cloud. The cloud infrastructure is provisioned for open use by the general public. It may be owned, managed, and operated by a business, academic, or government organization, or some combination of them. It exists on the premises of the cloud provider.
Private cloud. The cloud infrastructure is provisioned for exclusive use by a single organization comprising multiple consumers (e.g., business units). It may be owned, managed, and operated by the organization, a third party, or some combination of them, and it may exist on or off premises.
Community cloud. The cloud infrastructure is provisioned for exclusive use by a specific community of consumers from organizations that have shared concerns.

What IT Professionals Should know about where the Future of Blockchain Technology is going.
As an enterprise IT professional, you may be wondering where all the hype is going with blockchain? Blockchains are an open-source distributed database that use state-of-the-art cryptography to essentially facilitate transactions and or interactions that can be either financial or non-financial data. A Blockchain essentially is a record of transactions similar to a traditional ledger. These transactions can be recorded for anything and not just financial Blockchain is NOT Bitcoin Blockchain is NOT just about Cryptocurrency Blockchain is to Bitcoin, what the internet is to email Blockchain is now really about providing value to the enterprise
Whether you just now learning about what blockchain technology is or your deeply involved in a Proof of Concept (POC) then learning about the disruptive nature of blockchain technology is the right move especially technologies such as AI, ML and IoT are now enabling solid use cases with blockchains.
The seminar will cover topics such as.

Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.

I have heard many times that architecture is not important for the front-end. Also, many times I have seen how developers implement features on the front-end just following the standard rules for a framework and think that this is enough to successfully launch the project, and then the project fails. How to prevent this and what approach to choose? I have launched dozens of complex projects and during the talk we will analyze which approaches have worked for me and which have not.

5. Key Features of the VASA Plug-ins
• Enhanced operations management of storage
resources, including the ability to:
– Discover array components, configuration, and capabilities
natively from within VMware’s vCenter Management tool
– Allow VMware vCenter to Monitor the status and health of
the array and it’s components
– Identify trends in a VMs storage capacity usage for
troubleshooting
– Correlate events in Datastores on Hitachi LUNs with VMs
performance characteristics
– Enable creation of more efficient Storage Distributed
Resource Scheduling (sDRS) policies
6. • vSphere® Storage APIs for Storage Awareness (VASA) is a set
of APIs that enable VMware vCenter Server to detect the
capabilities of the storage array LUNs/datastores/VVOLS
• Storage capabilities, such as RAID level, thin or thick
provisioned, replication state and much more, can now be
made visible within VMware vCenter Server.
• It will make the use of storage profiles for VMs possible.
• VASA requires plug-ins for vCenter Server to be made
available by storage vendor.
• HDS plug-ins are:
– Hitachi Storage Plug-in for VMware vCenter (Hitachi Storage
Manager for VMware )
– Hitachi Storage Provider for VMware vCenter (NAS)
– Hitachi Storage Replication Adapter

8. • Hitachi Storage Plug-in for VMware vCenter is
composed of the following main components:
• VMware vSphere Client
• VMware vCenter Server
• ESX Host
• Storage Plug-In for VMware
– Storage Plug-In software must be installed on a
Windows OS that is running the vSphere Client(As a
vAPP)
– Storage Plug-In for VMware vCenter supports AMS
2000, VSP, Unified Storage and USPV. Support to
vSphere 6x coming.
HDS Storage Plug In Components
12. • Choose the right storage in terms of space,
performance and SLA requirements
• Monitor and report against existing storage
policies
• Create a foundation for manageability and
expand in future releases of vSphere
VMWare Storage Best Practices
14. • In 2011 VMware introduced block based VAAI APIs as part of
vSphere 4.1 release. This APIs helped improving performance
of VMFS by providing offload of some of the heavy operations
to the storage array. In subsequent release, VMware added
VAAI APIs for NAS, thin provisioning, and T10 command
support for Block VAAI APIs
• Virtual Volumes (VVOLs) VMware introduced a new virtual
machine management and integration framework that
exposes virtual disks as the primary unit of data management
for storage arrays. This new framework enables array-based
operations at the virtual disk level that can be precisely
aligned to application boundaries with the capability of
providing a policy-based management approach per virtual
machine.
Virtual Volumes
15. • In VAAI Block defines basic SCSI primitives, which allows
vSphere (primarily VMFS) to offload pieces of its
operations to the array. There is still a heavy dependency
on VMFS playing the role of an orchestrator and sending
individual VAAI Block command to the storage array.
• With VVOLs, the storage array systems are aware of
virtual machine’s disk and hence they can efficiently
perform operations such as snapshots, clones, and
zeroing operations on the virtual machines disks. But still
VAAI Block and thin-provisioning primitives co-exists with
VVOLs.
Virtual Volumes
16. • Nutshell Version – ENABLE SDDC
VVols introduce two major changes:
(1) VM-level granularity by introducing a one-to-one
mapping of VMs to storage volumes VVols eliminate the
need to provision large datastores for VMFS volumes;
storage provisioning now happens automatically on a per-
VM basis. Each VM is assigned its own unique VVol, which is
equivalent to a storage LUN.
(2) support for VMware’s SPBM to simplify storage
management and automate storage provisioning. Before
the introduction of VVols, storage arrays primarily
integrated with vSphere at the datastore level using
VMware’s VMFS. Moving forward, users can choose to use
VMFS or VVols (or both), with VVols offering more
advanced capabilities.
Virtual Volumes
20. Some of the key benefits…
• Enterprise-class infrastructure delivers highest
performance, scale, resiliency and data protection
• Use of Hitachi Dynamic Tiering, Hitachi Dynamic
Provisioning, and Virtual Infrastructure Integrator in
a VMware environment increases storage service
quality
• Primary storage de-duplication drives capacity
efficiencies
• VAAI and Virtual Infrastructure Integrator offload VM
processes to the storage to improve performance,
VM density and backup/restore operations
• Virtual Infrastructure Integrator enables faster and
space efficient clones
