4. WHAT IS A BLOCKCHAIN?

5. • A blockchain is a globally shared data structure, transactional backend
database.(In Bitcoin it’s generally called a ledger) This means that everyone
can read entries in the database just by participating in the network. If you
want to change something in the database, you have to create a so-called
transaction which has to be accepted by all others. The word transaction
implies that the change you want to make (assume you want to change
two values at the same time) is either not done at all or completely
applied.
• Furthermore, while your transaction is applied to the database, no other
transaction can alter it. Aka--Non- Reputable

7. The Definition.
• Ethereum is an open blockchain platform that lets anyone build and use
decentralized applications(dapps) that run on blockchain technology. Like
Bitcoin, no one controls or owns Ethereum – it is an open-source project
built by many people around the world.
• Unlike the Bitcoin protocol, Ethereum was designed to be adaptable and
flexible. It is easy to create new applications on the Ethereum platform, it is
now safe for anyone to use those applications with basic programming
skills. (Homestead)
• So if you know Java, JSON, PHP , Etc this is your game.

• Ethereum is essentially a planetary scale computer network (platform)
• Ethereum does not go down nor exposed to interference.
• Ethereum is secure cryptography but also transparent
• Ethereum is widely accepted for applications (dapps - decentralized)
• Ethereum is a consensus forming algo.
• Build decentralized apps on Ethereum essentially with “Ether”
• Proof of stake,(Coming with Serenity) fast and efficient.

- 12 Million were created to the development fund, most of it going to early
contributors and developers and the remaining to the Ethereum
Foundation
- 5 ethers are created every block (roughly 15-17 seconds) to the miner of
the block
- 2/3 ethers are sometimes sent to another miner if they were also able to
find a solution but his block wasn’t included (called uncle/aunt reward)

- Ethereum is not faster than most databases(Actually many times slower).
- Ethereum is not anonymous nor is privacy friendly.
- Ethereum is not fully mature nor ready for production.
- Ethereum is not only a cryptocurrency.
- Ethereum is not the perfect for solution for all FINTECH
- Ethereum is not centralized platform. (It’s a decentralized consensus)
- Ethereum is not an easy platform to develop on(open yes).

12. • One of the routine questions I receive is “What is the difference between
Ethereum and Bitcoin?”
• Bitcoin is a blockchain based system created to be able to transmit value
digitally, bitcoin is the digital currency on the Bitcoin network.
• Ethereum is a blockchain based smart contracts platform, with its own
digital token called “ether”.
• So another way to look at the difference … Ethereum is a worldwide
platform to run scripts(dapps). To be able to use it, you must provide
“fuel”, which is “ether” the ethereum token. So we can look Ethereum as a
worldwide computing platform for creating dapps. Bitcoin has a blockchain
to confirm transactions and avoid double spending. Bitcoin is a way to
settle transactions, nothing to do with running code. So in reality they are
two completely different things.

14. • Smart contracts also known as a smart property are computer protocols
that facilitate, verify, or enforce the negotiation or performance of a
contract, or that make a contractual clause unnecessary. Smart contracts
often emulate the logic of contractual clauses.
• A contract in the sense of Solidity Programming Language is a collection of
code (its functions) and data (its state) that resides at a specific address on
the Ethereum blockchain
• Can be written in Solidity, LLL, Mutant and Serpent. (Similar to Javascript,
Python, Lisp and Go)

16. • Solidity Programming language. You can use your browser and not need
to download anything unless you choose to compile or inject into the
blockchain. Then you need to download a program called

• Solidity is a high-level language whose syntax is similar to that of JavaScript
and it is designed to compile to code for the Ethereum Virtual Machine. As

18. • Complete 256bit Virtual Machine where you can execute arbitrary EVM
Byte Code(opcode).(distributed) , transactions, smart contracts and dapps.
• The EVM is part of the Ethereum Protocol and plays a crucial role in the
consensus.
• EVM like any VMs do have overhead. Not totally efficient but its portable.
Executes bytecode.
• Built for Ether to process transactions .
