18. • Successful cost optimization requires 3 key components: Discovery, Analysis and
Execution. Most IT orgs are not set up to handle all 3 (well) and opportunity costs can
be high.
• The “doers” are often not paying attention to all the nuances, keeping tabs on industry
best practices and the constantly-changing landscape of cloud cost.
• Impactful execution requires project management.
• Some sort of tooling is needed because the data processing requirements are so high.

19. • On Aug 22, a RS user leveraging custom dashboards noticed a Reserved Instance purchase without a correlating
drop in compute spend
• Discovered that the Reserved Instance purchase had correctly chose region, instance type, and operating system,
but had the wrong “tenancy” selected. The implications of this are that none of the RIs applied to existing usage
so all are currently entirely wasted, and as a result needs to modify the RIs to reflect the instance usage
• “Reserved Instance Utilization” policy would have caught this around August 5
• Recommendation: policy should be enabled immediately!
