Why you should always
choose SaaS and Cloud
when you have a choice
LUIS CARRASCO-CORTES
IBM COGNITIVE PROCESS TRANSFORMATION LEADER, CANADA AND CARIBBEAN.
ALL OPINIONS ARE MY OWN
1
Acquiring software as a service (SaaS)
is an economic decision when all
things are equal
 As you will see in the next slides, SaaS changes
the economics of running software
 The most important outcome is to variabilize your
cost structure and,
 Simplify your ability to run complex software
without having to hire IT experts and buy capital.
2
Acquiring software as a service (SaaS)
is an economic decision when all
things are equal
 Therefore:
 SaaS is a means to micro manage your cash flow
by only acquiring capability when you need it
 And cash flow is protected because when you do
need more resources, you can turn on additional
computing capacity in minutes to a few hours.
3
4
These are the
additional costs
with on-premise
software
What is not
described is the
time & cash flow
dimension… It can
take weeks to
months to get
operational in this
model
Subscription fee is
priced by the user and
unlike purchasing
licenses for an on-
premise deployment,
you can pay monthly.
This gives you
flexibility to control
expense.
Configuration is a one
time nominal fee
24 to 48 hours to be
operational!
The Economics of Cloud Computing / SaaS
But we also said “when all things are equal”… Things
are not equal for 99% of organizations, because SaaS is
much more economically efficient, for 99% of
organizations beyond the very largest
 In this presentation we will prove that the SaaS
offerings are backed up by levels of security and
procedures that would cost most businesses millions to
enable and manage
 So the real question is: How much will it really cost
you to provide the same level of skills and
infrastructure that you can get for a fraction of the
cost from IBM’s BPM and ODM cloud services?
5
And there is an even bigger question
 Once you acquire the software on premise, buy the
hardware to support it, hire or train the IT staff to run it and
maintain it…
 Can you send it all back and stop paying, if the business
initiative that required this investment is stopped or
divested?
 Hint: With SaaS/Cloud you can just stop the subscription!
And there is nothing to dispose of.
6
That said, some folks say “cloud is NOT
an option”
 But they are using Salesforce.com, Taleo, Workday, Concur,
Netsuite or other prominent 100% cloud based services >>>
They only exist in the cloud
 Hopefully the irony is self evident
 The fact is business users are adopting SaaS and cloud in all
organizations and that adoption is accelerating daily.
7
Here are all the supporting security and encryption services
that ensure your information is safer on the IBM Cloud than
even behind your own firewall… for most organizations that
don’t have multi million $ IT budgets…
8
Security is Fundamental
9
Connect to your own systems whether they
are in your corporate network or in the
cloud
10
This unsafe
connection is
NOT allowed!
Some of you are legitimately
concerned about the security of your
processes in the cloud
 IBM takes security very seriously and has gone to great lengths to create a very
secure environment.
 Existing clients are confident in the security, encryption, connectivity and operational
procedures we use to secure your data.
 As a result 1M+ processes are stored in the Blueworks Live Cloud.
 And you can expect the same with BPM and ODM.
 More than 1,200 customers host their process models in the BwL Cloud, across many
industries… and some of these clients are the largest organizations on the planet.
