Hamlet : William Shakespeare
 The tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark, usually
shortened to just Hamlet, was written by William
Shakespeare sometime between 1599-1602.
● It is arguably one of his most famous tragedies.
● The lines from Hamlet's monologue in act three that
begin “To be, or not to be..” have been studied and are
widely known .
● Even in Shakespeare’s own lifetime, Hamlet would have
been performed multiple times and consider remarkably
influential.
Definition of Revenge Play
● A Revenge play can be defined as drama.
● Protagonist seeks revenge for the bloody actions of
the antagonist.
● The revelation of the murder or crime comes to
protagonist through superficial appearances such as
ghosts.
● In the process of seeking revenge, the main
character might witness insanity, murder, suicide,
philosophical debates, etc.
Hamlet : A Revenge Play
● The Spanish Tragedy by Thomas kyd is considered
to be a refined of revenge tragedy.
● In Spanish tragedy, father hieronimo takes revenge
for his son Horatio's death.
● We can see that Hamlet takes revenge for the
murder of his father.
● It is a story concerned with murder, sudden
violence and the slower but more deadly reaction to
that violence.
Features of Revenge Play
● It deals with some crime murder heinous and most
unnatural.
● Some near relative or intimate person is called upon
to avenge the murder.
● It is the Ghost of the dead who reveals the crime
committed.
● Sacred duty to take revenge is accepted and revenge
is taken with disastrous consequences.
● There is much that is thrilling and sensational use of
fighting, of violence, madness even incest.
Illustration from Hamlet
● Murder of king Hamlet
by Claudius.
● The ghost of king hamlet
demands; ‘Revenge his
murder’.
● Ghost reveals that Claudius
murdered him in order to
steal his crown and his wife
● The ghost makes hamlet
promise to take revenge.
● Play Within Play :
● we realize that
Hamlet plans to put
on a play that
depicts the death of
his father, to see
weather Claudius is
really guilty, and the
ghost is really to be
trusted.
● Hamlet gets a
chance to
murder Claudius
but refrains as
Claudius is
praying.
● While Hamlet is telling the true story
about the king’s death to Gertrude,
polonius is listening them behind the
curtain to know about Hamlet’s madness.
● Hamlet thinks the person who is behind
the curtain is Claudius, so he stabs him.
● Death of Ophelia, Gertrude, Guildenstern,
Rosencrantz.
● Fight between Hamlet and laertes.
● Laertes will use a poison -tipped sword during a
fight with Hamlet and Claudius will have poisoned
drink at ready.
● Finally Hamlet revenges his father when he stabs
Claudius and force him to drink the poisoned
wine.
● Hamlet himself then dies from the wound recived
during the fight with laertes.
● The revenge plot is thus conclude.
● At the end only Horatio is live.
