Michael Alexander Kirkwood Halliday  Born April 13, 1925 in Leeds, England.  Winifred, his mother, studied French.  Wilfred, his father, taught English and was a dialectologist and a dialect poet who loved grammar and Elizabethan drama.  Studied Chinese as a volunteer for the national services foreign language training course in 1942.  Worked in India for one year with the Chinese Intelligence Unit.  Went back to London in 1945 to teach Chinese.
