Personality Types
What kind of person are you?
Learning Goals:
• Define the Myers Briggs Type Indicator test
and describe what it is used for
• Define the four main personality
characteristics and their opposites measured
in the MBTI
• Identify your MBTI score(s) and describe your
corresponding personality type(s)
• Describe why knowing your personality type(s)
can be beneficial to you, now, and in the future
Think About Your Personality…
• Think of a colour that
best describes your
personality
• Now arrange
yourselves so that
you form a colour
wheel matching this
one, with yellow at
the front of the class
• Now turn to the
people next to you
and explain how your
colour reflects your
personality
What things did you share in common
with the people who were next to you in
the colour wheel?
Was it easy for you to connect your
personality to a colour?
In what ways could we group or describe
personalities?
The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator
• A personality assessment and categorization tool based
on the work of psychologist Carl Jung, created by Isabel
Briggs Myers and her mother Katharine Cook Briggs.
• Assesses four basic personality characteristics:
– Our preferred social interaction level
– How we process information
– How we make decisions
– Our preferred level of structure for living by
– Each is a scale with polar opposites
• This gives us a possible 16 personality combinations,
which help us to categorize and understand ourselves
better
Isabel Briggs Myers
Katharine Cook Briggs
Personality Types:
• A Myers Briggs personality type consists of a four letter
combination derived from the following personality
characteristics:
– Introversion (I) vs. Extraversion (E)
– Sensing (S) vs. Intuition (N)
– Thinking (T) vs. Feeling (F)
– Judging (J) vs. Perceiving (P)
• Each of these personality characteristics is a scale and a
person may be at either end, or somewhere in the
middle on each.
• This gives a possible 16 personality combinations
Which Are You?
Extravert (E):
The following statements generally apply to me:
• I am seen as "outgoing" or as a "people person."
• I feel comfortable in groups and like working in them.
• I have a wide range of friends and know lots of people.
• I sometimes jump too quickly into an activity and don't allow
enough time to think it over.
• Before I start a project, I sometimes forget to stop and get
clear on what I want to do and why.
Which Are You?
Introvert (I):
The following statements generally apply to me:
• I am seen as "reflective" or "reserved."
• I feel comfortable being alone and like things I can do on my
own.
• I prefer to know just a few people well.
• I sometimes spend too much time reflecting and don't move
into action quickly enough.
• I sometimes forget to check with the outside world to see if my
ideas really fit the experience.
Which Are You?
Sensing (S):
The following statements generally apply to me:
• I remember events as snapshots of what actually happened.
• I solve problems by working through facts until I understand
the problem.
• I am pragmatic and look to the "bottom line."
• I start with facts and then form a big picture.
• I trust experience first and trust words and symbols less.
• Sometimes I pay so much attention to facts, either present or
past, that I miss new possibilities.
Which Are You?
Intuition (N):
The following statements generally apply to me:
• I remember events by what I read "between the lines" about
their meaning.
• I solve problems by leaping between different ideas and
possibilities.
• I am interested in doing things that are new and different.
• I like to see the big picture, then to find out the facts.
• I trust impressions, symbols, and metaphors more than what I
actually experienced
• Sometimes I think so much about new possibilities that I never
look at how to make them a reality.
Which Are You?
Thinking (T):
The following statements generally apply to me:
• I enjoy technical and scientific fields where logic is important.
• I notice inconsistencies.
• I look for logical explanations or solutions to most everything.
• I make decisions with my head and want to be fair.
• I believe telling the truth is more important than being tactful.
• Sometimes I miss or don't value the "people" part of a situation.
• I can be seen as too task-oriented, uncaring, or indifferent.
Which Are You?
Feeling (F):
The following statements generally apply to me:
• I have a people or communications orientation.
• I am concerned with harmony and nervous when it is missing.
• I look for what is important to others and express concern for
others.
• I make decisions with my heart and want to be compassionate.
• I believe being tactful is more important than telling the "cold"
truth.
• I am sometimes experienced by others as too idealistic, mushy,
or indirect.
Which Are You?
Judging (J):
The following statements generally apply to me:
• I like to have things decided.
• I appear to be task oriented.
• I like to make lists of things to do.
• I like to get my work done before playing.
• I plan work to avoid rushing just before a deadline.
• Sometimes I focus so much on the goal that I miss new
information.
Which Are You?
Perceiving (P):
The following statements generally apply to me:
• I like to stay open to respond to whatever happens.
• I appear to be loose and casual. I like to keep plans to a
minimum.
• I like to approach work as play or mix work and play.
• I work in bursts of energy.
• I am stimulated by an approaching deadline.
• Sometimes I stay open to new information so long I miss making
decisions when they are needed.
A quiz is
generally
used to
assess MBTI
scores and
each score
connects with
a personality
type…
Your Task:
• Take the following two tests on www.truity.com and see
what your personality type(s) are:
– Typefinder Research Edition
– Typefinder Facets
• These two tests will give you a sense of what your
personality types are and what that means about who
you are and how you relate with others and the world
around you.
• Some of your results might be expected, some might be
new and insightful.
• Remember that these tests are not the only ones out
there, and you could get different results from different
tests.
When you’re
done, make
sure you save
a screen shot
or copy and
paste your
results into a
document so
you can use
them in your
culminating
project for this
unit, as well as
in your
portfolio!
Learning Goals:
• Define the Myers Briggs Type Indicator test
and describe what it is used for
• Define the four main personality
characteristics and their opposites measured
in the MBTI
• Identify your MBTI score(s) and describe your
corresponding personality type(s)
• Describe why knowing your personality type(s)
can be beneficial to you, now, and in the future

GWL3O 2.6 personality types

  • 1. Personality Types What kind of person are you?
  • 2. Learning Goals: • Define the Myers Briggs Type Indicator test and describe what it is used for • Define the four main personality characteristics and their opposites measured in the MBTI • Identify your MBTI score(s) and describe your corresponding personality type(s) • Describe why knowing your personality type(s) can be beneficial to you, now, and in the future
  • 3. Think About Your Personality… • Think of a colour that best describes your personality • Now arrange yourselves so that you form a colour wheel matching this one, with yellow at the front of the class • Now turn to the people next to you and explain how your colour reflects your personality
  • 4. What things did you share in common with the people who were next to you in the colour wheel? Was it easy for you to connect your personality to a colour? In what ways could we group or describe personalities?
  • 5. The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator • A personality assessment and categorization tool based on the work of psychologist Carl Jung, created by Isabel Briggs Myers and her mother Katharine Cook Briggs. • Assesses four basic personality characteristics: – Our preferred social interaction level – How we process information – How we make decisions – Our preferred level of structure for living by – Each is a scale with polar opposites • This gives us a possible 16 personality combinations, which help us to categorize and understand ourselves better Isabel Briggs Myers Katharine Cook Briggs
  • 6. Personality Types: • A Myers Briggs personality type consists of a four letter combination derived from the following personality characteristics: – Introversion (I) vs. Extraversion (E) – Sensing (S) vs. Intuition (N) – Thinking (T) vs. Feeling (F) – Judging (J) vs. Perceiving (P) • Each of these personality characteristics is a scale and a person may be at either end, or somewhere in the middle on each. • This gives a possible 16 personality combinations
  • 7. Which Are You? Extravert (E): The following statements generally apply to me: • I am seen as "outgoing" or as a "people person." • I feel comfortable in groups and like working in them. • I have a wide range of friends and know lots of people. • I sometimes jump too quickly into an activity and don't allow enough time to think it over. • Before I start a project, I sometimes forget to stop and get clear on what I want to do and why.
  • 8. Which Are You? Introvert (I): The following statements generally apply to me: • I am seen as "reflective" or "reserved." • I feel comfortable being alone and like things I can do on my own. • I prefer to know just a few people well. • I sometimes spend too much time reflecting and don't move into action quickly enough. • I sometimes forget to check with the outside world to see if my ideas really fit the experience.
  • 9. Which Are You? Sensing (S): The following statements generally apply to me: • I remember events as snapshots of what actually happened. • I solve problems by working through facts until I understand the problem. • I am pragmatic and look to the "bottom line." • I start with facts and then form a big picture. • I trust experience first and trust words and symbols less. • Sometimes I pay so much attention to facts, either present or past, that I miss new possibilities.
  • 10. Which Are You? Intuition (N): The following statements generally apply to me: • I remember events by what I read "between the lines" about their meaning. • I solve problems by leaping between different ideas and possibilities. • I am interested in doing things that are new and different. • I like to see the big picture, then to find out the facts. • I trust impressions, symbols, and metaphors more than what I actually experienced • Sometimes I think so much about new possibilities that I never look at how to make them a reality.
  • 11. Which Are You? Thinking (T): The following statements generally apply to me: • I enjoy technical and scientific fields where logic is important.
  • 12. Which Are You? Feeling (F): The following statements generally apply to me: • I have a people or communications orientation. • I am concerned with harmony and nervous when it is missing. • I look for what is important to others and express concern for others. • I make decisions with my heart and want to be compassionate. • I believe being tactful is more important than telling the "cold" truth. • I am sometimes experienced by others as too idealistic, mushy, or indirect.
  • 13. Which Are You? Judging (J): The following statements generally apply to me: • I like to have things decided. • I appear to be task oriented. • I like to make lists of things to do. • I like to get my work done before playing. • I plan work to avoid rushing just before a deadline. • Sometimes I focus so much on the goal that I miss new information.
  • 14. Which Are You? Perceiving (P): The following statements generally apply to me: • I like to stay open to respond to whatever happens. • I appear to be loose and casual. I like to keep plans to a minimum. • I like to approach work as play or mix work and play. • I work in bursts of energy. • I am stimulated by an approaching deadline. • Sometimes I stay open to new information so long I miss making decisions when they are needed.
  • 15. A quiz is generally used to assess MBTI scores and each score connects with a personality type…
  • 16. Your Task: • Take the following two tests on www.truity.com and see what your personality type(s) are: – Typefinder Research Edition – Typefinder Facets • These two tests will give you a sense of what your personality types are and what that means about who you are and how you relate with others and the world around you. • Some of your results might be expected, some might be new and insightful. • Remember that these tests are not the only ones out there, and you could get different results from different tests. When you’re done, make sure you save a screen shot or copy and paste your results into a document so you can use them in your culminating project for this unit, as well as in your portfolio!
