Gwadar port
Introduction
• Warm-water, deep-sea port situated on the Arabian Sea.
• On 8 September 1958, His Highness Prince Karim Aga Khan
purchased the Gwadar from Oman for 1 million dollars, and gifted to
Pakistan.
• 120 km from the Iranian border.
• Port was inaugurated by Pervez Musharraf in 2005.
• Gwadar port became fully operational on 14 November 2016
WHY GWADAR ?
• Deepest sea port of Pakistan
• Highest depth.
• Large ships can be docked
• Warm-water
• surrounded by countries having two third oil reserves
Geopolitical Importance
• Gwadar surrounded by countries having two third oil reserves
• It is close to the Strait of Hormuz, through which more than 13 million
barrel oil per day passes.
• Capitalize on opportunities for trade with landlocked Central Asian
States and Afghanistan
Economical Importance
• Can act as shortest trade route to china.
• Pakistan can earn lot of foreign exchange through transit fee and
improve her foreign exchange reserves.
• 2 million jobs.

Construction of Gwadar Port:
• The development of Gwadar Port is to be undertaken in two phases:
1. Phase 1 (2002-2006) Rs.14.9 Billion
2. Phase 1 (Under construction, cost $600)
• 4 Container Berths
• 1 Bulk Cargo Terminal (to handle 100,000 DWT ships).
• 1 Grain Terminal
• 1 Ro-Ro Terminal
• 2 Oil Terminals to handle 200,000 DWT ships
• 4 lane expressway to connect the port to the Makran Coastal Highway
• New international airport.
Gwader vs. Chabahar Port
• Gwadar port is a much
bigger project than
Chahbahar.
• Chabahar is 0.5 billion
dollars and CPEC is 52
billion dollars project
• India invest in Chabahar
port to counter CPEC
projects.
• Afghanistan is no more
dependent on Pakistan.
