Social media platforms are used to spread information about causes and social issues, allowing for electronic calls to action that can raise awareness through sharing content. However, some support for social causes comes through passive or low-effort engagement online, termed "slacktivism," rather than meaningful participation in addressing injustices. Overall, modern activism increasingly utilizes websites and social networks to rapidly inform about and promote issues.

Everyone with internet access has the power to be both a creator and consumer of content. All this content contributes to the information tsunami that overwhelms us all. This presentation focuses on attention and the challenges of managing it in an information-rich world as lifelong learners and educators. Attention is explored as a scarce resource (Simon, 1971) and a digital literacy (Rheingold, 2012). The presenter will share examples of some digital tools and apps which he uses to manage the information tsunami. The audience will also be encouraged to discuss the digital tools they use to manage attention in a noisy 21st century world.

Ceres manages a network of investors engaging corporations on issues from environmental practices to social justice. Data fluency in today’s connected world has become a leverage point, inaccessible to many, leaving them unable to assess critical factors to act in their own or their communities’ interests. Data is a language that many people don’t speak, thus being conversant is becoming a societal “gap.” Data seed narratives. Powerful narratives can drive actions or they can distract and misinform. At a time with less institutional protection and fewer objective referees, those of us fluent in data need to help our communities understand data-driven systems and learn to speak the language.

http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024 Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error. Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials. This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
