The document discusses drought mitigation strategies in Australia. It notes that the government has historically taken a short-term view in dealing with drought that focuses on symptoms rather than underlying causes. It recommends adopting a more sustainable ecological economic efficiency approach through strategies like using more drought-resistant crops, improving soil conservation, reducing unsustainable farming, and investing in research and development of drought-resistant technologies and practices. Both short-term and long-term recommendations emphasize creating a more self-reliant agricultural system focused on risk management and sustainability rather than crisis response.

Scherr presented a commentary on the draft document “Food Security and Sustainable Resource Use - What are the Resource Challenges to Food Security?" prepared for the conference by Frank Place (CGIAR) and Alexandre Meybeck (FAO). She offered suggestions for advancing research, and proposed key priorities for action by FAO and the CGIAR: to encourage the adoption of known best practices, to support initiatives advancing multi-objective farms and landscapes, and to focus advanced science on multi-functional landscape systems.
This presentation was by Jason Vogel of Abt Associates and is about community-based adaptation in the United States. This presentation was given at the Natural Hazard Mitigation Association's annual Symposium held every July in Broomfield, Colorado.

Neuro-symbolic is not enough, we need neuro-*semantic*Frank van Harmelen
Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.
All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.
Kubernetes & AI - Beauty and the Beast !?! @KCD Istanbul 2024Tobias Schneck
As AI technology is pushing into IT I was wondering myself, as an “infrastructure container kubernetes guy”, how get this fancy AI technology get managed from an infrastructure operational view? Is it possible to apply our lovely cloud native principals as well? What benefit’s both technologies could bring to each other?
Let me take this questions and provide you a short journey through existing deployment models and use cases for AI software. On practical examples, we discuss what cloud/on-premise strategy we may need for applying it to our own infrastructure to get it to work from an enterprise perspective. I want to give an overview about infrastructure requirements and technologies, what could be beneficial or limiting your AI use cases in an enterprise environment. An interactive Demo will give you some insides, what approaches I got already working for real.

Elevating Tactical DDD Patterns Through Object CalisthenicsDorra BARTAGUIZ
After immersing yourself in the blue book and its red counterpart, attending DDD-focused conferences, and applying tactical patterns, you're left with a crucial question: How do I ensure my design is effective? Tactical patterns within Domain-Driven Design (DDD) serve as guiding principles for creating clear and manageable domain models. However, achieving success with these patterns requires additional guidance. Interestingly, we've observed that a set of constraints initially designed for training purposes remarkably aligns with effective pattern implementation, offering a more ‘mechanical’ approach. Let's explore together how Object Calisthenics can elevate the design of your tactical DDD patterns, offering concrete help for those venturing into DDD for the first time!

1. Julie Constanze Jiajia Moheth Stephen Drought Mitigation StrategiesGroup 1 – Terra Nova Consultants
2. Scale of the problem Large scale problem in Australia Centuries of drought should have prodded risk mitigation strategies Previous droughts were solved by farmers abandoning the land
3. Nature of the response of the government to date Dealing with the symptoms not the source of the problem Short term view for a long term problem (politics) Subsidies and other financial support are inadequate, ineffective and costly
4. The lack of focus of the government on ecological economic efficiency Government have not limited use of resources and the ecosystem cannot absorb the waste Renewable resources are exploited at too fast a rate that exceed ecosystems ability to regenerate Deplete non-renewable resources at rates that exceed rate of development of renewable substitutes
5. EEE Ratio 1 – Service efficiency Change from non-efficient crops to efficient drought resistant crops Social networking for farmers More efficient use of farm equity Ratio 2 – Throughput efficiency Protection and reduced depletion of soil: direct drilling (no ploughing), R&D genetically modified drought resistant crops, better fertilizers
6. EEE (cont’d) Ratio 3 – Growth Rate Reduce the number of non-efficient fields Crop rotation or selection = better output and greater biodiversity Ratio 4 – Ecosystem Efficiency Use of fields in areas that are more sustainable Raise awareness and fund programs regarding Soil and Water Conservation Raise awareness regarding harmful animal introduction that stress the plant crops on the region
11. Short term recommendations Recommend moving away from reactionary or crisis driven approach to one of self-reliance and risk management Create a social and networking community for farmers to share drought risk mitigation strategies Soil and water conservation efforts
12. Long term recommendations Assess who is sustainable (location of farm or crop selection) and if the farm is not sustainable plan to have an exit strategy Reduce funds and subsidies as this is not sustainable and reinvest in R&D Improve collaboration with international farmers that have good drought mitigation experience
Editor's Notes
These features prevent soil erosion and obstruct the flow of runoff. The retained water increases soil moisture and recharges the groundwater. Check dams are temporary structures constructed with locally available materials. Types of check dams are the brush-wood dam (Fig. 2 a), the loose-rock dam (Fig. 2 b) and the woven-wire dam. These features store water for livestock and recharge the groundwater. They are constructed by excavating a depression to form a small reservoir, or by constructing an embankment in a natural ravine or gully to form an impoundment.
