You then wonder if anyone will notice that you are not taking notes, but rather answering emails on your laptop or phone? Perhaps you’re on social media? The same may be true during parts of our RYE student orientations. An observation, when I first joined Rotary, that too often the inbound and outbound orientations were too long, too much talking done by Rotarians and perhaps too much repetition of information. Activities or “games” can be impactful, learning is improved and everyone enjoys the experience. Come and discuss a wide range of engaging action orientated activities for your program. This document provides tips and strategies for effective learning. It emphasizes that intelligence is about how well you learn rather than innate ability. Good students are organized, balanced, happy, and curious. The document recommends using a beginner's mindset by asking questions rather than assuming knowledge. Multitasking is discouraged as it reduces productivity and increases stress, while organizing one's time and spaces is presented as important. Effective note-taking and reading strategies are outlined to optimize learning from lectures and textbooks.
Self-management skills are important for managers to develop an authentic leadership style and create a meaningful work experience for employees. Managers should focus on self-awareness, being trustworthy and extending trust, accountability, and recognizing their own abilities. They should listen to employees, consider new ideas, and serve employees and guests. Pursuing outside interests, taking vacations, and getting a coach can help managers avoid burnout. Poor self-management likely contributes to common stigmas about long hours, low pay, lack of balance, stress, turnover and blame in operations management.
The document outlines the process for conducting a peer observation with a colleague as part of an action research challenge. It involves 1) choosing who to observe and setting up a pre-observation meeting to discuss the research topic and observation details, 2) conducting the classroom observation and taking notes, and 3) meeting after to reflect on techniques seen and how they could be implemented in the observer's own teaching. Considerations are provided for each step, such as the observer's research focus and schedule, and making the observation and reflection meaningful for improving instruction.
Educators' Network: Literature Circles 2012Miss Pickles
This document provides an overview of literature circles and how Sarah Pickles uses them in her 4th grade classroom. It includes 8 appendices that provide resources for implementing literature circles such as a letter to parents, descriptions of discussion roles, rubrics for assessment, and reflection questions. The goal of literature circles is to allow students to discuss texts in small groups at their independent reading level. Students take turns filling different discussion roles to prepare for and guide conversations. Literature circles are intended to help students engage more deeply with texts and improve reading comprehension and enjoyment.

How Food Banks Help Food-Insecure FamiliesEmma Wise
Emma Wise has been volunteering at food banks since 2012 and is passionate about dentistry and serving her community. According to statistics, 18.2% of US households in 2012 were food insecure, meaning they were uncertain of their ability to afford food. Food banks aim to provide sustenance for these individuals and families by supporting agencies that prepare and redistribute donated food throughout communities.
Cleveland's Got It All CD and the Greater Cleveland Food Bank Emma Wise
Emma Wise, a dental assistant and biochemistry graduate from Allegheny College, has volunteered with charitable organizations including the Greater Cleveland Food Bank. The Food Bank recently purchased an album called "Cleveland's Got It All" to support local nutrition programs. The album, recorded in Cleveland, features the title track and other songs by local artists to promote the city with a Motown-style beat and Christmas song. Half the proceeds from album sales go to the Food Bank's programs.
How to Help the Humane Society of Central IllinoisEmma Wise
Emma Wise volunteers at the Humane Society of Central Illinois in Bloomington in her free time. The nonprofit seeks to find homes for pets and relies on generous volunteers to assist at the Pet Adoption Center between 7 am and 8 pm by walking dogs, working with cats, grooming animals, and doing administrative and cleaning work. Volunteers can also foster or adopt animals or join committees after completing a New Volunteer Training Class.
Alpha Phi Omega - Its Founding and HistoryEmma Wise
Emma Wise, a graduate of Allegheny College, joined Alpha Phi Omega in 2009. Since that time, Emma Wise has completed numerous service projects both through the organization and on an individual level.
How to Contribute to the Midwest Food BankEmma Wise
Emma Wise volunteers with a variety of nonprofit organizations across the Midwest and in Pennsylvania, where she attended college. While volunteering with the Midwest Food Bank, Emma Wise helped service organizations connect with the food bank and obtain supplies during Distribution Weeks in 2012 and 2013.
Home Ownership through Habitat for HumanityEmma Wise
An avid community volunteer, Emma Wise has volunteered with the Geauga County chapter of Habitat for Humanity in Newbury, Ohio. There, Emma Wise partnered with organization leaders and other volunteers to build homes for families in need.
1) This document provides a table with the formulas and blanks to fill in the names of various ionic and covalent compounds. For the ionic compounds, the student is asked to provide the names for compounds with the formulas CaI2, Sr3N2, FeCl2, FeCl3, Pb(OH)2, NaC2H3O2, NH4NO3, KClO3, KOH, Al2(SO4)3, Ba(CN)2, Hg2Cl2, HgBr2, MgC2O4, CaCr2O7, NiSO4, FeCrO4, SnO2. This 4 step process for writing Lewis dot structures involves: 1) arranging atoms with the central atom having lower electronegativity, 2) adding up valence electrons and accounting for any charges, 3) drawing single bonds between atoms and removing 2 electrons for each, and 4) distributing any remaining electrons in pairs to satisfy the octet rule and complete the structure.
The document is a table hosted by Mr. Boland that defines the chemical formulas and ionic charges of common inorganic ions. It contains a 4x5 grid with chemical names assigned to each cell, and the corresponding chemical formula and ionic charge provided below the table. Some of the ions defined include cyanide, peroxide, nitrate, nitrite, chlorate, hypochlorite, and others.
Chart depicting the electronegativity differences of atoms, including definitions and examples of ionic and covalent bonding in the context of electronegativity.
This document provides instructions for students to draw electron dot diagrams for various elements, including lithium, oxygen, neon, magnesium, iodine, boron, sulfur, carbon, and phosphorus. It also lists several molecules for students to draw Lewis structures for, such as PCl3, CH4, CH3Br, F2O, IBr, and NH2Cl. The document is a worksheet to practice drawing electron dot diagrams of elements and Lewis structures of molecules.

This document contains guided notes on thermodynamics and kinetics for a chemistry unit. It defines key concepts like energy, heat, temperature, enthalpy, entropy, Gibbs free energy, and specific heat. It explains endothermic and exothermic reactions, Hess's law, and how to calculate heat transfer using specific heat capacity. Sample problems are provided to demonstrate calculating heat and temperature changes. The document is a set of lecture notes intended to instruct students on important topics in thermodynamics.
This document provides directions for building different atoms and isotopes using marshmallows, toothpicks, and spice drops to represent subatomic particles. It includes a chart to fill out with the number of protons, neutrons, and electrons as well as atomic mass for various atoms and isotopes including hydrogen, helium, lithium, beryllium, and boron. It also asks questions about isotopes, what the number after an element represents, how to determine neutrons in an isotope, and whether changing protons changes the element.
This document provides directions for an activity where students will use Skittles to model the formation of ionic and covalent bonds between various atoms. For the ionic bond portion, students demonstrate the transfer of electrons from one atom to another to form ions and explain how opposite charges attract to form bonds. For covalent bonds, students show the sharing of electron pairs between atoms and explain how this sharing achieves stable noble gas configurations. The document concludes with questions about ionic versus covalent bonding concepts.
