Security lighting is lighting that
intended to deter or detect
intrusions or other criminal activity
occurring on a property or site. It
can also be used to increase a
feeling of safety.

prevention through environmental
design

TYPES OF SECURITY
LIGHTING
Illumination refers to the process of
providing light or brightness to an
area or object. It involves the
deliberate use of artificial light
sources to enhance visibility,
illuminate spaces, or highlight
specific objects or features.
Illumination is an essential aspect
of lighting design and plays a
significant role in various
applications, including residential,
commercial, industrial, and outdoor
settings.

GENERAL OR AMBIENT LIGHTING
TASK LIGHTING
General or ambient lighting provides overall illumination to
a space, ensuring a comfortable level of brightness for
everyday activities. It is typically achieved using overhead
fixtures, such as ceiling-mounted lights, recessed lighting,
or chandeliers. General lighting aims to evenly illuminate
the entire area without creating harsh shadows.
Task lighting is focused illumination designed to facilitate
specific activities or tasks. It provides targeted light for
activities that require enhanced visibility and precision,
such as reading, writing, cooking, or working at a desk.
Task lighting sources include desk lamps, under-cabinet
lights, or adjustable spotlights. Task lighting is usually
brighter and more concentrated than general lighting to
provide ample illumination for the task at hand.

ILLUMINATION
ACCENT LIGHTING
DECORATIVE LIGHTING
Accent lighting is used to highlight specific objects,
architectural features, or decorative elements within a
space. It adds visual interest, depth, and drama to the
environment. Accent lighting can be achieved using track
lighting, wall-mounted fixtures, or adjustable spotlights. By
directing light onto focal points, accent lighting creates
contrast and draws attention to the highlighted areas or
objects.
Decorative lighting serves aesthetic purposes, adding
beauty and visual appeal to a space. It includes decorative
fixtures, such as chandeliers, pendant lights, or wall
sconces, which are designed to be visually striking and
create a focal point. Decorative lighting fixtures often
incorporate unique shapes, materials, or intricate designs,
making them a statement piece within the overall lighting
scheme.
INFRA RED SECURITY LIGHTING
IR light, also known as infrared radiation, is a different type of light on the
light spectrum that emits radiant energy. It has wavelengths longer than
visible light, and it is invisible to the human eye. When it comes to security, IR
is a great option when you don’t want an intruder to know they are being
watched, but you still need surveillance capabilities to know they are there.
IR and your security cameras can provide this type of “invisible” security
since both types of cameras—digital and analog—rely on IR LEDs to be able to
“see” what’s happening when it’s dark or there isn’t an available light source.
When a camera switches to night mode, the images that the camera captures
inside can change from color to black and white, the picture becomes “grainy,”
and/or it becomes too dark which shows nothing but a black image. Color is
crucial to your security cameras’ ability to see clearly when the sun goes down.
By adding light, however, your camera can go back to color. This change also
increases the detail your cameras can capture, making it much easier to more
accurately see what’s going on in the cameras’ field of vision. If you want the
ability to read the license plate of an intruder, for example, you’ll need that more
detailed recording that your IR light-enhanced security cameras can provide.
How does IR lighting enhance your security cameras?

Infrared illuminator
IR 850nm illuminators are most commonly used for day/night cameras and
closed-circuit televisions (CCTVs). They are classified as “semi-covert”
since they do produce a faint red glow that can be seen when looking at the
camera, making them not completely invisible although still very useful.
IR 940nm illuminators do not emit that faint red glow, making them nearly
invisible to the naked eye, earning them the “covert” classification. IR
940nm illuminators are widely used by law enforcement, military, traffic,
and railroads.
If you’re thinking about adding IR to your security camera, it’s important to
consider the different types. IR illuminator emits light within the following IR
range:
WHAT ARE INFRARED SENSORS?
Infrared sensors are a specific
type of motion sensors that use
infrared radiations. The main use-
case of this device is within
physical security and, in
particular, for intrusion detection
purposes.
The two types of infrared sensors
are active infrared sensors and
passive infrared sensors with
these last ones being the
preferred ones in the context of
physical security.
HOW DO INFRARED SENSORS WORK?
The functioning depends on if the sensor is active or passive (PIR).
Active infrared sensors work with radar technology and they both
emit and receive infrared radiation. This radiation hits the objects
nearby and bounces back to the receiver of the device.
Through this technology, the sensor can not only detect movement
in an environment but also how far the object is from the device.
This is especially useful in robotics to detect proximity.
HOW DO INFRARED SENSORS WORK?
For the physical security use case, however, passive infrared
sensors (PIR sensors) are definitely more widespread.
The PIR sensors do not emit radiation but simply receive the
one that the objects nearby are naturally emitting.
The basic functioning is that the passive infrared sensors
trigger the alarm when there is an anomaly in the infrared
waves measured in the room.
This happens if, for example, a warm object (like an intruder)
crosses ways to the signal of the device.
DIFFERENCE
Infrared radiation works on the lower end of the electromagnetic
spectrum and is therefore invisible to the human eye. The infrared
section of the electromagnetic spectrum is found between the
visible waves and the microwaves. The infrared wavelength is
between 0.75 and 1000µm and is separated into three regions:
Near-infrared - from 0.75 to 3 3µm
Mid-infrared - from 3 to 6µm
Far-infrared - higher than 6µm
Infrared technology is widely used for commercial purposes for:
Night vision devices.
In astronomy, to detect objects in the universe by telescopes and
solid-state detectors.
In military activities for missile tracking.
In art restoration to analyze paintings and discover hidden painting
layers.
For tracking nanoparticles in living organisms.

  • 2. INTRODUCTION Security lighting is lighting that intended to deter or detect intrusions or other criminal activity occurring on a property or site. It can also be used to increase a feeling of safety. Lighting is integral to crime prevention through environmental design It is usually the first line of defense at the security fence or wall line.

  • 5. CONTINUOUS LIGHTING STANDBY LIGHTING EMERGENCY LIGHTING PORTABLE LIGHTING Continuous lighting floods a given area with overlapping cones of light. Fence sensors or manual input are used trigger lights when suspicious activity is detected. Powered by a battery or generator, emergency lighting is used when normal lighting fails. It involves the deliberate use of artificial light sources to enhance visibility, illuminate spaces, or highlight specific objects or features. Illumination is an essential aspect of lighting design and plays a significant role in various applications, including residential, commercial, industrial, and outdoor settings. ILLUMINATION
  • 7. GENERAL OR AMBIENT LIGHTING TASK LIGHTING General or ambient lighting provides overall illumination to a space, ensuring a comfortable level of brightness for everyday activities. It is typically achieved using overhead fixtures, such as ceiling-mounted lights, recessed lighting, or chandeliers. General lighting aims to evenly illuminate the entire area without creating harsh shadows. Task lighting is focused illumination designed to facilitate specific activities or tasks. It provides targeted light for activities that require enhanced visibility and precision, such as reading, writing, cooking, or working at a desk. Task lighting sources include desk lamps, under-cabinet lights, or adjustable spotlights. Task lighting is usually brighter and more concentrated than general lighting to provide ample illumination for the task at hand. TYPES OF ILLUMINATION
  • 8. ACCENT LIGHTING DECORATIVE LIGHTING Accent lighting is used to highlight specific objects, architectural features, or decorative elements within a space. It adds visual interest, depth, and drama to the environment. Accent lighting can be achieved using track lighting, wall-mounted fixtures, or adjustable spotlights. By directing light onto focal points, accent lighting creates contrast and draws attention to the highlighted areas or objects. Decorative lighting serves aesthetic purposes, adding beauty and visual appeal to a space. It includes decorative fixtures, such as chandeliers, pendant lights, or wall sconces, which are designed to be visually striking and create a focal point. Decorative lighting fixtures often incorporate unique shapes, materials, or intricate designs, making them a statement piece within the overall lighting scheme.
  • 9. INFRA RED SECURITY LIGHTING IR light, also known as infrared radiation, is a different type of light on the light spectrum that emits radiant energy. It has wavelengths longer than visible light, and it is invisible to the human eye. When it comes to security, IR is a great option when you don’t want an intruder to know they are being watched, but you still need surveillance capabilities to know they are there. IR and your security cameras can provide this type of “invisible” security since both types of cameras—digital and analog—rely on IR LEDs to be able to “see” what’s happening when it’s dark or there isn’t an available light source.

When a camera switches to night mode, the images that the camera captures inside can change from color to black and white, the picture becomes “grainy,” and/or it becomes too dark which shows nothing but a black image. Color is crucial to your security cameras’ ability to see clearly when the sun goes down. By adding light, however, your camera can go back to color. This change also increases the detail your cameras can capture, making it much easier to more accurately see what’s going on in the cameras’ field of vision. If you want the ability to read the license plate of an intruder, for example, you’ll need that more detailed recording that your IR light-enhanced security cameras can provide.   • 11. IR 850nm illuminators are most commonly used for day/night cameras and closed-circuit televisions (CCTVs). They are classified as “semi-covert” since they do produce a faint red glow that can be seen when looking at the camera, making them not completely invisible although still very useful. IR 940nm illuminators do not emit that faint red glow, making them nearly invisible to the naked eye, earning them the “covert” classification. IR 940nm illuminators are widely used by law enforcement, military, traffic, and railroads. If you’re thinking about adding IR to your security camera, it’s important to consider the different types. IR illuminator emits light within the following IR range:
  • 12. WHAT ARE INFRARED SENSORS? Infrared sensors are a specific type of motion sensors that use infrared radiations. The main use- case of this device is within physical security and, in particular, for intrusion detection purposes. The two types of infrared sensors are active infrared sensors and passive infrared sensors with these last ones being the preferred ones in the context of physical security.
  • 13. HOW DO INFRARED SENSORS WORK? The functioning depends on if the sensor is active or passive (PIR). Active infrared sensors work with radar technology and they both emit and receive infrared radiation. This radiation hits the objects nearby and bounces back to the receiver of the device. Through this technology, the sensor can not only detect movement in an environment but also how far the object is from the device. This is especially useful in robotics to detect proximity.
  • 14. HOW DO INFRARED SENSORS WORK? For the physical security use case, however, passive infrared sensors (PIR sensors) are definitely more widespread. The PIR sensors do not emit radiation but simply receive the one that the objects nearby are naturally emitting. The basic functioning is that the passive infrared sensors trigger the alarm when there is an anomaly in the infrared waves measured in the room. This happens if, for example, a warm object (like an intruder) crosses ways to the signal of the device.
  • 16. Infrared radiation works on the lower end of the electromagnetic spectrum and is therefore invisible to the human eye. The infrared section of the electromagnetic spectrum is found between the visible waves and the microwaves. The infrared wavelength is between 0.75 and 1000µm and is separated into three regions: Near-infrared - from 0.75 to 3 3µm Mid-infrared - from 3 to 6µm Far-infrared - higher than 6µm
  • 17. Infrared technology is widely used for commercial purposes for: Night vision devices. In astronomy, to detect objects in the universe by telescopes and solid-state detectors.
