Cities are more and more witnessing the emergence of innovation initiatives,
indifferently originated by top-down or bottom-up intentionality, that are being
observed and analysed as Urban Living Labs, i.e. socio-digital innovation ecosystems
made up of creative communities of people producing innovation at urban
level with the support of a number of methods and tools helping to co-create value
out of the experience of interaction between the citizen/customer and
private/public actors.
These Urban living Labs are activators of experiments of governance innovation
which include people, institutions, private actors, relationships, values, processes,
tools and physical or financial infrastructures, that could trigger, generate, facilitate
and catalyse innovation in the city. These are spheres for knowledge creation
within the city and differ for dimensions, scale of action, nature (top-down or
bottom-up), organizational structure, and also for the way in which the participants
acts and are represented. They are also heterogeneous for the space of action in
which they emerge and can be interrelated and connected by topics, contexts,
interests, practices, and level of maturity in many different ways.
In Urban Living Labs new governance modes and models are experimented,
where participants acts in several and not pre-defined ways, creating complex
organizations able to integrate hierarchical and horizontal structures and creating
specific spheres of action stimulating collective testing and learning. In these
environments, governance is experimented between formal and informal publicprivate-
people partnerships able to shape innovative dialogues between citizens
and city institutions.
In this perspective the workshop aims at investigating some questions:
1.What kind of organizations is shaped in Urban Living Labs?
2.How is governance modelled in Urban living labs?
3.How is governance experimented?
4.What level of institutionalization is opportune for the emerging governance?

In 1968 Doug Engelbart gave “The Mother of All Demos”: a disruptive technology lab had quietly invented the mouse, collaborative on-screen editing, hyperlinks, video conferencing, and much more. This was the start of the paradigm shift, still unfolding: computers were no longer to be low level number crunchers, but might mediate and mould the highest forms of human thinking, both individual and collective. In this talk I review nearly 19 years in KMi chasing this vision with many colleagues, inventing tools for making dialogue, argument and learning processes visible in different ways. How do we harness such tools to tackle, not aggravate, the fundamental challenge facing the educational system, and its graduates: to think broadly and deeply, and to thrive amidst profound uncertainty and complexity? These are the hallmarks of the OU — and indeed, all true education from primary school onwards.

A study of tipping point: much less is known about the most efficient ways to reach such transitions or how self-reinforcing systemic transformations might be instigated through policy. We employ an agent-based model to study the emergence of social tipping points through various feedback loops that have been previously identified to constitute an ecological approach to human behavior. Our model suggests that even a linear introduction of pro-environmental affordances (action opportunities) to a social system can have non-linear positive effects on the emergence of collective pro-environmental behavior patterns.

What’s happening here? And how can we fix this? This presentation is a call for new perspectives on making that are critical, hands-on and research-based – helping us think both *through* and *with* objects to bring about fundamental + sustainable lifestyle alternatives. It looks at different theoretical approaches to machine materiality, from hacking to social science and "jugaad" to psychogeography, and from Actor Network Theory and Material Semiotics, to Situationism and Relational Aesthetics, to Critical Making and Critical Design.
It also asks two big questions that have been nagging at me from my own experiences with community making + fabrication.
First, how can we better correlate the making of objects with critical reflection about their effects?
Second, how can we engage in sustainable making (both environmental and social) without producing material excesses or disempowering lesser-served communities?

BCcampus is interested in making collaboration around OER easier because we've moved from a system where our involvement in the textbook creation/adaption process was very hands on to a process where we need to be very hands off. We hope that by making tools that help authors move through a workflow on their own, it will fill in the gap. What we have so far is a model of what works in OSS, a few assumptions, a little bit of research to back up those assumptions and some feedback from a quick survey.

Summary: Does the History, Dynamics, and Structure of our Universe give any evidence that it is inherently “Good”? Does it appear to be statistically protective of adapted complexity and intelligence? Which aspects of the big history of our universe appear to be random? Which are predictable? What drives universal and societal accelerating change, and why have they both been so stable? What has developed progressively in our universe, as opposed to merely evolving randomly? Will humanity’s future be to venture to the stars (outer space) or will we increasingly escape our physical universe, into physical and virtual inner space (the transcension hypothesis)? In Earth’s big history, what can we say about what has survived and improved? Do we see any progressive improvement in humanity’s thoughts or actions? When is anthropogenic risk existential or developmental (growing pains)? In either case, how can we minimize such risk? What values do well-built networks have? What can we learn about the nature of our most adaptive complex networks, to improve our personal, team, organizational, societal, global, and universal futures? I’ll touch on each of these vital questions, which I’ve been researching and writing about since 1999, and discussing with a community of scholars at Evo-Devo Universe since 2008. For more:

Clinical Synthesis Map: Cancer Care Pathways in Canadian Healthcare

The Clinical Map visually represents breast and colorectal cancer processes across Canadian provincial and territorial systems. A roadmap metaphor illustrates a system-wide view of patient flow across the stages of cancer care. Green “road signs” identify clinical cancer stages across the roadmap: Pre-Diagnosis, Peri-Diagnosis, Diagnostic Interval, Diagnosis, Treatment, Rehabilitation, After Care, and Survivorship (with Palliative Care expressed as an end point). The visual metaphor of seasonal trees visually connects these stages to the patient’s cancer journey from pre-diagnosis (summer) through treatment (winter), followed by new growth (spring) in survivorship.
The levels of primary, secondary and tertiary care guide the vertical dimension. Information and communications technology reaches across levels and stages, but is shown disconnected from primary care. The road-like pathways are colour-coded where experts differentiated care pathways between breast cancer (pink) and colorectal (blue). Where not distinguished (white), the pathways indicate current practices shared across the cancer journeys.
Yellow navigation signs indicate cancer events across primary care pathways. Starting with Prevention and ending with Long-term Care, these events show points for primary care continuity during cancer treatment. A parallel path below the stages indicates where some patients may also employ complementary or alternative therapies.
Significant areas of complexity generalized across cancer care are revealed in peri-diagnosis and the diagnostic interval pathways. A patient can be screen-detected (and then present to a family physician, shown in the breast cancer pathway) or may be initially diagnosed in primary care (white pathway). The circular pathways in the diagnostic cycle suggest multiple possible tests within primary care. With a primary care diagnosis, patients are referred and flow to secondary/tertiary cancer care. The stages of intake, biopsy, pathology, and confirmed diagnosis are shown, and the complex pathways of cancer treatment, shown on the map in a typical (not definitive) order of surgery, radiation/chemotherapy, and continuing treatment through assessment of outcome.
