Saving Environment to Save Ourselves…?
• pre historic man constructed huts using bamboos, coconut
leaves and other local building materials
•Buildings offered protection from sun, rain, wild animals etc.
History of Building Construction
Building Materials are fetched from long distance
A lot of Energy is consumed in construction as
well as maintenance of the buildings
Pollutants of various degrees of harm are
released into the environment while construction
and maintenance of such buildings
Synthetic and artificial building materials are
used which cause harm to the inhabitants
getting conscious about
environment
feeling responsibility for
the environment
New approach to
building construction …
Change of Scenario : Global Warming
et al …
CONCEPT OF
“GREEN
BUILDING”
 new approach to save water, energy material
resources in construction maintenance of buildings
reduce or eliminate adverse impact of buildings on
the environment & occupants.
1. Retain external environment at location of building.
2. Improve internal environment for occupants
3. Preserve environment at places far away from building
 propose multistoried office complex selection of
site for such should consider
 retention of local vegetation, wild life, natural
water courses etc.
 Either a site with bio diversity should be
avoided or
 building should be planned to reduce site
disturbance.
 THEY ARE AS FOLLOWS:
 LAND
 WATER
 ENERGY
Land :
Landscaping & exterior design there is more shaded area, the
light trespass is eliminated & local species of plants are grown.
Energy:
Tapping solar energy at roof-top of green building
minimize the usage of electricity.
High efficiency light fixtures make a pleasant lighting apart
from saving the energy.
High-efficiency windows and insulation in walls, ceilings,
and floors are used for the benefit of better temperature
control.
Green buildings improve internal environment
for the occupants
Light:
A feel of outdoor location & blend the natural and artificial
lighting and presenting transparent views
Air:
Air conditioned environment
specially equipped to ensure Indoor Air Quality for
healthy atmosphere. Even the nasal feelings shall be
pleasant free from the odor of paints and furnishings
A comfortable atmosphere at work stations
improve the attendance of the staff and
increase the productivity.
Audit for Green Concept in Buildings
Categories for Rating LEED points
1. Sustainable site - 12
2. Water efficiency - 8
3. Energy and atmosphere - 17
4. Material and resources - 13
5. Indoor Environment Quality- 15
6. Design process and innovation- 4
7. Employing LEED designer- 1
Green buildings preserve the environment at places far away from the
buildings
20 percent of greenhouse gasses emitted by building materials
Use the products that are non-toxic, reusable, renewable, recyclable
Locally manufactured products are preferred fuel for the transport of
materials is saved.
 Building materials are also going green.
Unpolluted Water, Soil, Mountains and thick Forests
are the Forts defending a Land
JUST
GO GREEN ….
