Manchurian Candidate And Animal Farm Comparison Essay
Despite having vastly different plotlines, characters, settings, the stories of Animal Farm and
Manchurian Candidate have strikingly similar parallels when it comes to the basis of theme. Animal
Farm is a simpler, almost light hearted take on a communistic society, told through the perspective of
farm animals who rebelled and overtook the farm; these animals represent those involved in the
Russian revolution, as well as the rise of communism. Manchurian Candidate has a story that is a bit
more rough on the perception of communism; it s a story of a man who is struggling with corruption
and brainwashing to further a communistic agenda. While both of these stories seem to have only a
few ideals in common, they both share a common central theme

I. THE INITIAL STOP WAS CONSTITUTIONAL AND DID NOT VIOLATE APPELLANT S
FOURTH AMENDMENT RIGHTS BECAUSE POLICE OFFICER EXECUTING THE STOP
REASONABLY THOUGHT THAT CALIFORNIA VEHICLE CODE WAS BREACHED The
Constitution protects individuals from unreasonable seizures under the fourth amendment. The stop of
the individual by the law enforcement does not constitute an unlawful seizure because it was
reasonable within the meaning of Heien and therefore suppression is not warranted. Section A

Heien v. North Carolina, 135 S. Ct. 530, 534 (U.S. 2014). A traffic stop for a suspected violation of
law is a seizure of the occupants of the vehicle and therefore must be conducted in accordance with
the Fourth Amendment. Id. at 536. Seizures based on mistakes of fact may be reasonable. Id. at 532.
All parties agree that to justify this type of seizure, officers need only reasonable suspicion that is, a
particularized and objective basis for suspecting the particular person stopped of breaking the law. To
be reasonable is not to be perfect, and so the Fourth Amendment allows for some mistakes on the part
of government officials, giving them fair leeway for enforcing the law in the community s protection.
Reasonable suspicion arises from the combination of an officer s understanding of the facts and his
understanding of the relevant law. Id. at 536. Courts do not examine the subjective understanding of
the particular officer involved. The Fourth Amendment tolerates mistakes and preserves probable
cause if those mistakes whether of fact or of law [are] objectively reasonable. Id.

Friedrich a Hayek
Running head: FRIEDRICH HAYEK 1 Friedrich August Von Hayek Donotra Woods Post University
FRIEDRICH HAYEK 2 According to Hayek (1994, p. 168) Probably it is true enough that the great
majority are rarely capable of thinking independently, that on most questions they accept views which
they find ready made, and that they will be equally content if born or coaxed into one set of beliefs or
another. In any society freedom of thought will probably be of direct significance only for a small
minority. But ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Hayek acknowledged trade cycles as monetary authorized by the government, a semi monopoly is
created and basic money is controlled. He was convinced in order to keep the economy in good
condition, it was important to have a limited democracy. Hayek s theory of business cycles and the
role of monetary policy create a boom and bust cycle. The booms and busts develop when the central
bank independently decides to cheapen credit, and expand the supply of loanable funds. In like
manner, investors become more optimistic in new technology they want to invest in. They come to
banks when they want to borrow more. Instead, banks allowed the interest rate to go up, and the
central bank becomes involved by injecting enough credit to keep the interest rate from rising. In the
presence of an on going boom, the way to prevent the boom from becoming FRIEDRICH HAYEK 5
an uncontrollable inflationary spiral was to stop increases in the quantity of money, or at least reduce
the rate to the rate of growth of production, ...but [i]t does not follow that we should not stop a real
deflation (Cochran, 2011, p. 276). He think the denationalization of money, is the best way to prevent
future monetary shock. Hayek strongly believed fighting inflation with unemployment would be the
best decision. But, Keynes believed that fighting unemployment with inflation

The Gettysburg Address By President Abraham Lincoln
The Gettysburg Address was a speech composed and addressed by President Abraham Lincoln in
1863, at the time of the political fight in Gettysburg Pennsylvania. At that time, Abraham Lincoln was
the President of the United States. He was also the President who led America through the Civil War.
During the Civil War, at Gettysburg, some soldiers died protecting the nation. This was mentioned in
Lincoln s speech, which was meant to be dedicated to the soldiers who died defending their people.
He spoke of how a piece of land on Earth should be dedicated in their memory in order to show
respect for dead soldiers. The Gettysburg Address was an effective way of President Abraham Lincoln

Mencken criticized Lincoln s Gettysburg Address, saying that it made no sense. To Mencken, the
speech was just one of Lincoln s political moves to gain more fame and win the people s support, and
Lincoln speech was untrue because Mencken believed that the speech was just mere words to soothe
the listener. Mencken gave the opinion which he felt was right regarding the message Abraham
Lincoln presented at the Gettysburg Address, by criticizing it as being eloquent , poetry and said that
its beauty undercuts its logic , sense and truth .(Mencken 1920, 775). However, it was not true because
during the speech in Gettysburg, Lincoln proved to the people that he was not just saying these things
because they was eloquent and had beauty , but, because he had plans for the growth of the nation
after the Civil War. Mencken presented Lincolns speech as It is difficult to imagine anything more
untrue (Mencken 1920, 775). Imagine the way the people behaved before the Civil War. They was
slavery in the South; The North, with the help of Lincoln, the Northerners gained their freedom
because, Lincoln stated the war was a test on the nation Now we are engaged in a great civil war,
testing whether that nation, or any nation so conceived and so dedicated, can long endure (Abraham
Lincoln, 774). One of the major objections to Mencken s idea of the speech was to state

Why A Hospital s Bond Rating Is Important
The four fundamental factors that affect the supply of and demand for investment capital, and hence
interest rates, are productive opportunities, time preferences for consumption, risk, and inflation.
Explain how each of these factors affects the cost of money. In your discussion, explain why a hospital
s bond rating is important and describe the different levels. (You can use any bond rating agency for
analysis).
Productive opportunities are the supply and demand of capital are based on the business s profitability.
The higher the profits the higher the interest rate. Conversely , the lower the profitability the lower the
interest rate. The ability to borrow money is enhanced if the lender perceives the business as profitable
and the risk is lower. Time preferences are based on their time for consumption and solely by personal
preferences. This is dependent on the needs of the investor. The basis of this is if the investor wishes
to save his money for the future, that investor may accept a lower return for future consumption. An
investor who has the need for high consumption (needs money in the short term), will lend the money
only if the interest rate is high. The needs of the investor will play into the ability for a business to
borrow money. If investors need long term, future returns, then interest rates would lower, if the
investor needs money in the short term the interest paid to attract the investor and their capital will
need to be higher. Risk is based on

The Reason Why La Tomatina
The reason why La Tomatina is a big deal for people because it is a colorful tradition and make a good
excuse to show of young people throwing vegetables to each other. Before 2013 anywhere from forty
thousand to fifty thousand people crammed into this tomato fight. Numbers of people came to this
special celebration created a success. Last year s event bought some forty thousand people, due to
safety concerns of oversize of the crowd the organizers cut amount of people who were joining the
fight. It is almost unimportant in the landscape of popular Spanish celebrations. It was virtually
unknown outside of the small village where it is held until somehow it caught the eye of some major
media outlet. Another reason why some people do not participate is because they do not like tomato to
be thrown at. They replied that it is messy and people get hurt if they slip over. In this special
celebration, there is no political or religion importance to La Tomatina. In 1980, the organization of
the festival became the responsibility of the town. Soon this celebration became internationally
considerable and highly broadcasted by the use of international media. In the beginning, it was
forbidden in the early 1950 s but people spoke and the celebration was allowed with more contestants
and more frenetic feelings. The festivity was again cancelled till 1957, when as a sign of protest, the
tomato burial was held. Many parts of the world joined Tomatina like Chicago and etc. They also

The Price Of Crude Oil Essay
Abstract
The price of crude oil has experienced a sharp decline since June, 2015. The stunning fall in oil prices
has been one of the most important global macro economic developments of the past 20 months.
There are numerous factors that have contributed to the oil price crash and the downturn of the oil and
gas industry. These factors would further be discussed in this paper . Causes of Oil Price Crash in
Recent Times
The oil industry is full of economic booms and busts. Recently, the industry is in a downturn and the
price of crude oil has dropped significantly. In recent times, the price of oil has dropped by more than
40% since June 2015. This crash came after nearly five years of stability and the economies hardly hit
by this downturn are oil exporting countries such as Russia, Nigeria, Iran and Venezuela. In the past
one year and a half, oil prices have been cut in half and oil executives have predicted it will be years
before oil prices return to $100 per barrel. The major causes of the downturn are the declining prices
of a barrel of oil, which is as a result of the strong U.S. dollar, oversupply, OPEC and declining
demand.
The oil price is partly determined by actual supply and demand and partly by expectation. Demand for
energy is closely related to economic activity. Supply can be affected by weather and by geopolitical
upsets. Recently, demand for energy is low because of weak economic activity, inctreased efficiency,
and a growing switch away from oil to

Cook County Juvenile Detention Center History
Cook County Juvenile Temporary Detention Center Rehabilitation Of The Past: The Beginning and
The End Of the 20th century
The Cook County Juvenile Temporary Detention Center in Chicago,Illinois is the largest juvenile
detention center in the United States. The Cook County Juvenile Detention center has been housing
and rehabilitating juvenile offenders since the very early 1900s. Reports showed that even in 1912,
that rehabilitation had been working and recidivism was decreasing. The report of the Cook County
Juvenile Detention Center Chief Probation Officer in 1912, shows that in the course of successive
years, beginning with 1912, there had been a continuous decrease in the number of children sent to
institutions. For instance, in 1912, 1913, 1914, 1915 and 1916, the number of children sent to
institutions have been as follows respectively: 1422, 1200, 1154, 1044 and 975. Furthermore, since
February 1, 1916, probation officers have been charged with the duty of visiting the homes from
which children have been taken with a view to the improvement of the home and with a view to
getting the parents into such a position that they can receive their children again from the institution to
which they have been sent.

King Henry Manipulation
Good morning/afternoon English teachers. All representations of people and politics are indeed acts of
manipulation as true political agendas must be hidden behind a misleading facade. Language plays a
particularly powerful role in portraying in these political representations. However ambiguous the
political motive may be, control is the ultimate goal in the world of politics. Contrary to popular
belief, not all acts of manipulation are inherently immoral or solely pragmatic. King Henry IV: Part 1
(1596 1597), the second historical play of the Henriad, by William Shakespeare, provides insight into
these ideas as his own work is as such a representation of people and politics of the Elizabethan Era,
two hundred years before his own time. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The portrayal of Prince Hal is exemplary of Shakespeare s use of manipulation to position the
audience to favour a political figure. Initially he sets himself a bad impression to the audience by
being brash and irresponsible. Prince Hal s relationship to Falstaff and company was a tool for him in
order to create for himself a notorious image which he could later shed and expose his true valor. At
the end of Act 1, Scene 2, Hal, through his soliloquy, shows that he has a completely different
perspective on his own actions, conceding that they are unsuitable for a King but that he is engaging in
this behaviour for a clear political purpose. Hal uses the central metaphor of the sun in his speech: Yet
herein will I imitate the sun (1.2.157) and creating imagery of the sun appearing from the clouds,
symbolising his glorious rise from his behaviour: Being wanted, he may be more wondered at/By
breaking through the foul and ugly mists (1.2.161 62). He ends with a rhyming couplet I ll so offend,
to make offence a skill,/ Redeeming time when men think least I will (1.2.176 77). The conclusive
effect of the rhyming couplets establishes Hal s intent to exploit the tendency of humanity to
appreciate a change or reformation by behaving poorly

Go Tell It On The Mountain
Go Tell It on the Mountain is a story than many African Americans can relate too. Author James
Baldwin paints a picture of what the post Civil War era was for former slaves and their families. Many
African Americans moved north in areas such as Harlem to find better job opportunities and to escape
the harsh treatment of the Jim Crow laws in the South. As black families were moving to the North,
many saw this as an opportunity to start over. It was a sentiment of being reborn again. That is why I
believe the Pentecostal church was very attractive to many African Americans. The Pentecostal church
gave the African American community a sense of relief. It was an outlet from the harsh and cruel
treatment that was distributed on a daily basis. The Pentecostal gave the black community hope just
like how Moses led the Israelites out of Egypt. There is a parallel to the Pentecost that the church
would lead people to a better life and after their time on Earth is over. One of the main themes
discussed in the book is silence. Silence was mainly discussed in the section of Gabriel s Prayer .
Gabriel is a preacher in the novel. He was once a very ambitious and wild who felt like he was on top
of the world and nothing could stop him. In this part of the book, his sister, Florence is crying at the
altar. This gave him a flashback to when he was crying on a tree he often sees on a daily basis. He was
waiting for a sign from God to cleanse him of all his sin but hears

Glossophobia Is The Fear Of Public Speaking
Importance of Communication
Glossophobia is the fear of public speaking. The average person ranks the fear of public speaking
higher than the fear of death. According to the National Institute of Mental Health over 74% of people
suffer from speech anxiety (Brain, 2016) . This is a sad statistic being that communication is the
backbone of our society. It is what allows us to connect with others. Without communication skills, we
would not be able to form relationships, whether in our personal or professional lives. We, as a society,
tend to think that communication is only verbal. However, communication includes nonverbal,
written, even listening, as well as our body language. In fact, over 70% of our communication is
nonverbal. In this class I hope to improve on my interpersonal communication by learning ways to
overcome my fear and setting new standards in the way I communicate with others. In my personal
life, improper communication has led to more than one situation that caused hurt to someone I love.
Likewise, I have been on the receiving end of hurt directly as a result of poor communication.
Currently, if I were to rank my comfortability in speaking in front of the class, I would say it would be
a 4 out of 10. I know many people would think it would be higher, but the fact of the matter is I have
an anxiety when it comes to public speaking. Being an extroverted personality often leads people to
believe I would have no problem speaking in public, but when the spotlight is on, it is an entirely
different story. The moment I know I must get up in front of a group of people, I start to feel dread,
my stomach goes into knots, my heart starts to race, and my palms get clammy. I always try to be the
first speaker so that these feelings of dread can disappear sooner than later. Ironically, after I finish
speaking (assuming it went well) I feel a sense of accomplishment. There is a remarkable sense of
pride that comes with effectively communicating to your peers and being well received.
My hope is that by taking this Communication 100, I will find new ways to effectively communicate,
which will not only help me grow as a person, but will further my success in the competitive job
market. Some of the

Essay on Killer Angels by Michael Shaara
Killer Angels by Michael Shaara
Most people think of the Civil War as a military battle between the North and South. Without studying
the subject, they do not appreciate the facts that make up this historical event. When one reads the
novel, Killer Angels, the reader is given a much better perception and understanding of what actually

The main generals for the South were Lee and Longstreet. For the North there was Buford and

Round Top was very moving and courageous. I realized all the things the men had to give up and how
amazing it was to see that they still had hope they would win and be back home with their families. I
enjoyed how the book made me feel like I was directly involved with the incidents that occurred. The
book instills in one s mind what a battle fought during the Civil War was actually like. This is a
tremendously moving novel, completely unforgettable.
Throughout the book, the reader is exposed to the pain, difficulty, anguish, and other dilemmas the
armies face leading up to the final confrontation. There is extreme loss and unimaginable pain

Essay on Durkheim and Marx Theories Applied to Drug Laws
All societies have rules and regulations as well as penalties for those who violate them. There are
numerous theories about the philosophy behind these laws and punishments, and the reasons we
implement them. A short analysis of two of these perspectives can shed light on the differences
between the various ideas while illustrating that, in reality, each theory carries some validity.
Emile Durkheim and Karl Marx s perspectives on the law are significantly different. Durkheim s view
is based upon the belief that a society s legal system reflects the values of society as a whole, while
Marx s view is based upon the belief that laws reflect a continuing conflict between the classes. An

In the late 1980 s and early 1990 s, drug use became a major concern for most Americans. As the War
on Drugs and Just Say No campaign were being thrust into the spotlight by the government and
media, the public became more aware of the scope of drug use and abuse in this country. The federal
and states governments quickly responded by creating and implementing more harsh and punitive
punishments for drug offenses. Most of these laws have either remained unchanged or become stricter
in the years since then.
According to the Durkheimian perspective, the public sees drug use as an unacceptable behavior and
recognizes it as a threat to morality and values. As such, drug users must be punished in order to
restore societal harmony and deter future offenses. The increasingly punitive reaction to drug use in
the 1980 s can be seen as a reaction to the public s increasing perception that drugs are a threat to the
moral fabric of society. By inflicting severe punishment on drug offenders, the community is satisfied
with the knowledge that drug addicts are paying for

Human Activities And Its Effects On The Environment Essay
Abstract Singapore and Malaysia are deeply affected with situations such as haze in the atmosphere
due to several causes that are mainly due to human activities. The interesting part about the issue is
that human activities are done in recklessness and in turn affect other human activities in the process.
Human activities such as education proves that human beings are not like any other living organisms
on the planet. Hence, we notice that education has to go on just like other activities which include
economic development and the health industry. Moreover, there are other causes of the haze which
entails the natural calamities such as heavy rainfall and tsunami. The industrial activities have been
affecting the geographical environment of the two countries negatively. Hence, judging by this, life
becomes very difficult for both human and animals as their health is at risk. If the issue is addressed
effectively then there will be a great improvement on health, education and economy in the two
countries.
Keywords: haze, health, tsunami, industrial activities.
Introduction
Being neighbors to Indonesia, Singapore and Malaysia are not excluded from the choking as a result
of the haze from Indonesia s forest fires. As of 2015 the choking became more intense due to air
pollution at the same time cutting off flights and important activities. Schools in Singapore and
Malaysia have been affected as a result of this choking. In Malaysia wildlife have been negatively
affected. The

The Impact Of Consciousness On Modern Day Psychology
The study of consciousness in modern day psychology is becoming increasingly difficult to explain. In
the early days of consciousness studies it may have been explained as our experience or awareness
(Blackmore, 2010). However, over a number of years, there have been many psychologists who have
contributed many important theories towards the explanation of how consciousness works, and its
initial existence. As Chalmers states: There is nothing that we know more intimately than conscious
experience, but there is nothing harder to explain (Chalmers, 1995 p.200). Being one of the leading
philosophers in consciousness, David Chalmers introduced the idea of the Hard Problem in 1994.
Chalmers defined the hard problem as: The questions of how physical processes in the brain give rise
to subjective experience (Chalmers, 1995 p.63). Chalmers suggested that he found it difficult to
understand how a small mass of grey matter such as the brain could produce conscious experience.
These ideas of a hard problem in consciousness were rejected by a number of theorists, which will be
discussed later in the essay. Another idea which Chalmers has put forward is the zombie. A zombie,
according to Chalmers is a being identical to you and I, speaks like you, acts like you, but is not
conscious (Blackmore, 2010). A zombie contains no qualia (a physical conscious experience). The
idea of the zombie put forward by Chalmers is extremely important in the explanation of
consciousness and has been

Comparing Three Different Classes of Vertebrates
Introduction Chordates are an animal phylum that is classified by four main characteristics that they
all obtain over the course of their lifespans. The first characteristic is the pharyngeal slits, which can
be found in non vertebrates, allow substances to enter and exit (Speer 2000). The dorsal nerve cord
serves as a connection between the brain and other muscles (Speer 2000). The notochord can be found
below the nerve cord and acts as a support system (Speer 2000). Finally, the post anal tail comes out
from the body from the opening of the anus (Speer 2000). One major characteristic that distinguishes
Vertebrates from invertebrates is the backbone that is present in their bodies. Vertebrates also have two
pair of appendages and have bilateral symmetry (Adojaan 2005). Along with a fully developed organ
system, Vertebrates have a central and peripheral nervous system and a closed circulatory system
(Adojaan 2005). This lab report compares Amphibia, Reptilia, and Mammalia in order to outline the
similarities and differences between the many vertebrate classes. By comparing and contrasting theses
classes, a further understanding and knowledge of Vertebrates can be gained. Part A Class Amphibia,
more commonly known as amphibians, have several features that set them apart as a unique Class.
Organisms found within the Class Amphibia are cold blooded and have very smooth skin (Prakash
2014). Amphibians can be found on both land and water, which is necessary in order to keep

Application Of An Enterprise Architecture
Introduction Most organizations have different types of systems that have been implemented and
being used for different purposes over the year of their operations. In this day and age, technologies
seem to change rapidly with executives and managers finding it difficult to get a pictorial view of the
existing systems whenever a new system is being implemented. The primary purpose of an enterprise
architecture is to integrate the Information Technology (IT) assets across different departments of an
organization and in order to create blueprints that will define the current organizational structure and
the targeted structure. There are a couple of system development models among which is the System
Development Life Cycle (SDLC). SDLC is a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Anaya and Ortiz (2005), defined enterprise architecture as a blueprint that provides a common view of
the primary resources of any enterprise (people, processes and technology) and how they integrate to
provide the primary drivers of the enterprise. Anaya and Ortiz further went on to explain that
enterprise architectures are used mainly as two types of tools, which are: engineering tool and
management tool. As a tool for engineering, the enterprise architecture defines specific roles and
responsibilities which are assigned to various personnel of the organization that must be followed in
order to accomplish the objective of the organization. As a management tool, a manager will be able to
visualize the connections or relationships between operating process, resources, information systems
across different functions of the enterprise.
Importance of an Enterprise System Architecture Enterprise System architecture plays an important
role in every organization as it creates a road map that is to be followed to better articulate the
business operating process of an organization. ERP system architecture provides a foundation for both
the functional and the technical needs of the organization and

Red Kangaroo Research Paper
The Red Kangaroo is a herbivore, meaning that its main energy source consists of plants that are high
in fibre and starch. It is difficult to break cellulose down and other cell wall thickenings in plant
material. So, the cellulose cell walls they create a barrier around the cell contents preventing enzymes
from reaching the high energy, starchy contents of the cell, which can be capable of being digested.
Herbivores need to s large amount of chewing to eventually break down cellulose walls, thus exposing
starchy contents and also to increase the surface area of cell walls that are exposed to microbes, which
can digest cellulose. Cellulose cannot be used as an efficient energy source for herbivores unless
microbes are present in the gut thus; ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The digestive tract starts at the kangaroo s jaw to suit the kangaroo s grazing habits with the snout
being elongated. Kangaroo teeth endure a lot of wear and tear. The bottom incisors are attached by
ligament allowing the gap to snip through individually selected grasses, ensuring the ingestion of the
best available forage. The forward drift of molars guarantees that the teeth are not in occlusion
allowing for a durability of dentition for a long period of time as it shoves the other molars towards
the front, forcing the worn molars in front to move out. The stomach of a kangaroo is a long, tubular,
colon like organ that consists of two main sections, which include the enlarged fore stomach and the
hind stomach. The fore stomach is split into two chambers, which include the sacciform and tubiform.
The ventral fold separates both chambers. The sacciform a storage compartment, has been reduced in
size over time through evolution. The tubiform fore stomach is mostly used for fermentation;
however, microbial fermentation takes part in both sections of the fore stomach. The saclike front
chamber of the stomach contains bacteria, fungi and protozoa that initiate the process of fermentation
that is essential for the kangaroo to digest its food

Essay on Critical Reflection on One Nurse-Family Interaction
Introduction
This paper describes a significant learning family interaction that occurred when I was working in a
community placement as a student nurse. I would be reflecting on that family interaction and use the
One Question Question approach and analyse how this would contribute to your learning needs and
nursing practice.
Critical or significant interactions can be defined as situations that make an impression or have a
special meaning to an individual. The analysis of such incidents, a useful reflective technique helps us
to identify professional capabilities, increase knowledge of self and improve patient care outcomes
(Lian, 2001) and lead to practice that is better informed than before the reflection (Usher et al, 2001).

The OQQ provides tremendous opportunities for nurses to be aware of and understand the areas of
families greatest anxiety, challenges, sufferings, and concerns. By simply asking the OQQ can give the
message to the family that as a nurse I care about the family and want to be helpful. (Duhamel et al,
2009)
In the case of my family interaction, the OQQ helps me as a student nurse to communicate with the
parents about their son. Family is the constant in the adolescent s life, hence; I must work with the
family to develop the best plan of care for the adolescent. The family is also the adolescent s main
source of support providing stability in what can be an otherwise traumatic period in the adolescent s
life. The most important task of the nurse is to provide support to the family. Nurses should not only
establish rapport with the patient but also with the family. This allows for optimal collaboration and
collaborating with the family maximizes each child s growth and well being. Working together parents
and health care workers can make more personal and informed decisions regarding what the best
treatment is for the child. (Neal et al., 2007)
To be able to come up with the best nursing care plan, I need to know what is happening currently. I

A Rhetorical Analysis Of Mother Tongue By Amy Tan
In Mother Tongue, we learn about the Amy Tan s love for language; specifically, the English language.
Tan then introduces her conflict with her mother tongue and proper English and how this relates to her
mother. Tan shows and explains how she rejects the idea that her mother s English is in need of fixing
while explaining how she viewed English tests as subjective. She explains how she believes
achievement tests can t capture things like intent and passion which is what she strives to capture in
her writing. Tan explains that she now uses all the Englishes she s learned and that she strives to
preserve the essence of her mother tongue. The last line confirms that she has reached her writing
goals of including all of the different forms of English into her novel as her mother says that the book
that Tan had written was, So easy to read. Tan s main conflict is the variation of Englishes she had to
use and the struggles it brought her. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

mostly uses pathos in her essay to appeal to readers emotions. An example of her pathos style is when
she informs the reader about her mother s tumor: ...the hospital did not apologize when they said they
had lost the CT scan......they did not seem to have any sympathy when she told them she was anxious

The Ultimately Successful The Houthi Movement
Ultimately successful the Houthi movement was able to get a greater role in the Yemeni government,
and even more local autonomy. This agreement helped stave of a full fledged civil war, but at the same
time it reduced the governments ability to conduct any real political or economic reforms. Despite this
new agreement President Hadi was ever more determined to ensure no one faction gained too much
power within the new federal system. Thus he put forth his chief of staff, Ahmad Awad bin Mubarak,
as candidate for Prime Minister in an attempt to help establish his system. The Houthi leadership
ultimately did not approve of the appointment, due to Mubarak s close relationships with President
Hadi, so in January of this year Mubarak was abducted at gunpoint. With President Hadi choice no
longer an option, the Houthi Leadership wanted one of there own to be come the Prime Minister. Later
that month, after the Houthis rejected a power sharing deal a few months prior, and many events
causing undue pressure on President Hadi and his cabinet, decided to resign their offices. In a manor
of day the Houthi rebels stormed and took over the presidential palace and forced Hadi and his Prime
Minister, Khaled Bahah, to officially send resignation letter to the parliament, which promptly
declined their resignations; but nonetheless the Houthi rebels forced them out of office and dissolved

Compare Dr Jekyll And Mr Hyde And The Victorian Era
Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, and the Victorian Era... do they relate?
The strange case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, is a book written in a specific period of time. However,
one can relate this book to the period it was written. But can a book say as much about a period as a
period can about a book? Truly, in their own way, they reflect one another by the elements which
drove humanity then and still drives it now good and evil. Those elements are the crux of Jekyll and
Hyde and the Victorian era: the duality of oneself as good but also wanting to satisfy the evil fantasies
that reside in one s imagination.
Dr. Jekyll, a well respected person, spent most of his life keeping his evil urges at bay. One day he
creates a potion that physically turns him into a smaller stature, mysterious, evil Mr. Hyde. While Dr.
Jekyll is transformed as Mr. Hyde, he can satisfy his twisted desires without a glimpse of remorse.
This goes on long enough that, despite Dr. Jekyll s remorse when he s back to his normal self, and his
desire to end Mr. Hyde, he starts spontaneously turning into Mr. Hyde until he must take the potion
just to stay conscious That same duality is embedded in the time Jekyll and Hyde was written. It
contains those same elements of good and evil with the addition of smoggy streets. The Victorian
period was a point in time when Queen Victoria I ruled England and vastly expanded its economic
well being. In the words of Dr. Thomas Arnold, an English educator and historian, about the

Gertrude Stein Analysis
Stein s life and the impact on her art The author of this poem, Gertrude Stein, was born in Allegheny,
Pennsylvania, and she is the youngest of five children. This prestigious modernist writer came from a
family of wealthy German Jewish immigrants, who unfortunately passed away. Her mother died of
cancer in 1888, and her father, a wealthy and known merchant, passed in 1891. When Gertrude was
still a young child, her family moved from Pennsylvania and went back to Europe. Stein spent her first
years in Vienna and later in Paris. In the year of 1879, she went back to America, and settled in
Oakland, California. Her brother Leo is one of her greatest influences. Since, of all brothers, they are
the closest, when he decided to leave Baltimore to enroll at Harvard, Stein decide to come along with
no sign of hesitation. Because of Harvard s policy to not allow women, Stein enrolled at the Harvard
Annex, the precursor to Radcliffe College, where she studied psychology for four years. Because of
her interest in the subject, Stein decided to pursue the field and went to medical school, where she
began to study at Johns Hopkins in the fall of 1897. With time her eagerness declined, and her grades
dropped. She had a history of depression, as you can see in her writing from the time, alongside with
the disappointment in her studies. She couldn t see herself in the traditional roles as wife and mother,

Analysis on the Standard of Living in the Industrial Revolution Debate
Before the Industrial Revolution, Great Britain s economy relied heavily on agriculture, which at that
point of time was based a flawed system dating back to the Middle Ages. This system, known as the
open field system, showed agricultural inefficiencies, and was disallowing of innovation. These
inefficiencies eventually led to the privatization of land for agriculture, in an effort to solve what is
now commonly referred to as the tragedy of the commons . Great Britain was now moving forward,
and as the country (and continent) began enclosing their land, Britain began a period of
modernization, with new technologies that would increase productivity in industry to a level never
before seen. This is the period commonly referred to as the Industrial Revolution, and was an era of
unprecedented growth in industry from the middle of the 18th century until around the middle of the
19th century. In 1760, 53% of the British population worked in agriculture. By 1840, that had dropped
to 29%. The evolution from water and wind power to steam engines, as well as the creation of many
pieces of machinery for the textile industry (such as the Spinning Jenny, which reduced the production
time on yarn) vastly improved British manufacturing of goods, and the reliance on agriculture
continued to drop. The development from an agricultural focus

Covert actions involves the use of military and political operatives as an intelligence activity, aimed at
a specific target and undertaken in such a way that it does not reveal the identity of the source of the
action. Through this concealment, the identity of the actor is disguised, providing deniability (Burgos,

over the centuries and have developed through necessity for a particular civilization. The Egyptians

Greece perfected its implementation of deception to surprise its enemies (Holmes, n.d.). Following

Cultural And Religious Beliefs And Beliefs
Family is something that makes people what they are and supports them in every difficult situation.
Cultural and religious beliefs often dictate family structures, and the beliefs of those cultures and
religions, especially regarding genders, are then reflected in power dynamics. This happens because
cultures manipulate people s perspective of viewing genders because of their religious beliefs. Some
families are shaped according to this belief that men are more important and the boys in a family get
more privileges and more attention than the girls. Different cultures and their beliefs make the boys
and the men look more powerful and cause the girls to think that they are inferior to the boys.
In Hmong and in many other households, boys are seen as more important. They are the ones who will
carry the family traditions and name to next generation. Girls are seen as someone else s property as
they will get married and go to someone else s family and will carry their name and be a part of that
family. Girls since childhood are taught that the house they were born in and are raised in is not their
actual house. Their house will be where their husband lives. In Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down,
Anne Fadiman wrote about how a girl s placenta is buried under her parent s bed. However, a boy s

The Influence Of John Locke On Personal Identity
According to John Locke the question what are you? is personal identity. As for what personal identity
is Locke states, depends on consciousness, not on substance or a soul (John Locke: An Essay
Concerning Human Understanding). Locke seems to define memories as the source of a consciousness
in his chapter of Identity and Diversity. In addition, Locke believes that consciousness is independent
from all substances, but cannot exist independently without a body or a mind. However, that doesn t
mean that consciousness is confined to a particular body or mind. For example, in Locke s Chapter
XXVII Of Identity and Diversity states, Upon separation of this little finger, should this consciousness
go along with the little finger, and leave the rest of the body, it is evident the little finger would be the
person, the same person; and self then would have nothing to do with the rest of the body. . Locke
asserts that this applies to all parts of the body. This would suggest that if a person fell into a coma,
they would be dead according to lock. As they no longer have any awareness or can access their
memories. Unless somehow the person s consciousness could be inserted into another individual. For
example, if the person in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Therefore, using third party prospectors will initiate research and production units with the motivation
of having a ready high end market for the products (Roy, 2013).
Cost plus pricing
The ideal pricing strategy for Whole Foods Market will adopt the cost plus pricing strategy that takes
into account the cost of operations or cost of production plus a constant profit. The organic food
market analysis in Namibia indicates that there is a structured market with specific consumer. Organic
foods are better produced locally than flown from abroad. Therefore, the cost of producing these foods
using the local resources will be expected to reduce the retail cost because local production costs are
not equal to abroad production costs (Chris, et al., 2005). Another important pricing strategy ideal for
Whole Foods Market is to use psychology of pricing such that the retailer analyses the responses of
the market and develop a pricing strategy ideal to that consumer response. However, psychological
pricing will depend on the quality of organic foods and consumer services the company is going to
offer to its consumers in the foreign market. In return, the consumers are going to respect and pay for
quality and healthy organic foods they receive from Whole Foods Market Company. Since the market
for the organic food industry in Namibia is already defined as a niche that caters for the elite and

Criminal Responsibility In Criminal Behavior Research
Criminal responsibility revolves around intent, which is a theme in debate on culpability. The study to
be reviewed was led by Williams et al (2010), which found at the age of 16, 46% of offenders
interviewed reported TBI. The main cause of the TBI was violence. Reports of more than three TBIs
were associated with a greater proportion of violence in criminal offences, suggesting number of TBI
is positively correlated with number of aggressive acts. Research in the past similarly indicates
individuals who experience traumatic brain injury (TBI) are more likely to commit future criminal
acts (Raine et al, 2005). Individuals with TBI affecting the frontal lobes are at an increased risk of
impulsive aggression and reduced affective empathy (Brower Price, 2001), characteristics evident in
frequent offenders (Jolliffe Farrington, 2004). This suggests an increased risk of criminal behaviour,
post TBI, especially when the frontal area is damaged. Thus, can TBI be used to reach the not guilty
verdict in court, by reasons of diminished responsibility or can it be argued other premorbid variables
at work? I critique Williams et al (2010) and propose when violent behaviour is the cause of TBI,
there should be consideration of whether the behaviour ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They concluded substance abuse led to increased inhibition and violence resulting in more criminality
and risk of TBI. Similarly, TBI criminals had a high occurrence of alcohol abuse both before and after
TBI; those with substance abuse history were also more likely to commit crimes after TBI. Kreutzer et
al (2009) concluded TBI is only a risk factor for criminality when there is a history of both criminality
and substance abuse and should not be considered a risk factor in its own

A Young Woman s Fantasy in The Turn of the Screw Essay
A Young Woman s Fantasy in The Turn of the Screw
The Turn of the Screw, by Henry James, is an odd story about a young woman who, leaving her small
country home for the first time, takes a job as a governess in a wealthy household. Shortly after her
arrival, she begins to suffer from insomnia and fancies that she sees ghosts roaming about the grounds.
James is a master story teller and, at times, the complexities of the story make it difficult to follow.
The Turn of the Screw is a story within a story, the tale of the governess being read aloud as a ghost
story among friends. Harold C. Goddard wrote a fascinating piece of criticism entitled A Pre Freudian
Reading of The Turn of the Screw. When applied to the book, his ... Show more content on

She is very excited at this point and one might infer that she is infatuated with her employer. However,
all her hopes of a relationship are unrealistic, as there is a vast difference in class between herself and
the man from Harley Street. Furthermore, her employer gives her strict instructions [t]hat she should
never trouble him (6). So we see that she is never to communicate with the object of her affections
again. At the end of her interview, after she agreed to these stipulations, we are told that when ...he
held her hand, thanking her for the sacrifice, she already felt rewarded (6). This description proves that
the new governess is in love with her employer. Later in the book, during her first encounter with the
ghost of Peter Quint, it is clear that she is thinking of her love as she says that her first shock at seeing
a man in the tower was that it was not the person [she] had precipitately supposed it would be (15). It
is clear that she was hoping it would be the man from Harley Street.
According to Goddard s theory, the ghosts of Peter Quint and Miss Jessel are images conjured up in
the mind of the unstable, young governess. Goddard addresses this issue accordingly. To the reader,
this may seem like a strange notion because the governess is able to give a description of the ghosts
that seems eerily accurate, even though she never saw them before. In the case of Peter Quint, the only
distinguishing characteristic about her

  • 2. Manchurian Candidate And Animal Farm Comparison Essay Despite having vastly different plotlines, characters, settings, the stories of Animal Farm and Manchurian Candidate have strikingly similar parallels when it comes to the basis of theme. Animal Farm is a simpler, almost light hearted take on a communistic society, told through the perspective of farm animals who rebelled and overtook the farm; these animals represent those involved in the Russian revolution, as well as the rise of communism. Manchurian Candidate has a story that is a bit more rough on the perception of communism; it s a story of a man who is struggling with corruption and brainwashing to further a communistic agenda. While both of these stories seem to have only a few ideals in common, they both share a common central theme ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Id. at 536. Seizures based on mistakes of fact may be reasonable. Id. at 532. All parties agree that to justify this type of seizure, officers need only reasonable suspicion that is, a particularized and objective basis for suspecting the particular person stopped of breaking the law. To be reasonable is not to be perfect, and so the Fourth Amendment allows for some mistakes on the part of government officials, giving them fair leeway for enforcing the law in the community s protection. Reasonable suspicion arises from the combination of an officer s understanding of the facts and his understanding of the relevant law. Id. at 536. Hayek acknowledged trade cycles as monetary authorized by the government, a semi monopoly is created and basic money is controlled. He was convinced in order to keep the economy in good condition, it was important to have a limited democracy. Hayek s theory of business cycles and the role of monetary policy create a boom and bust cycle. The booms and busts develop when the central bank independently decides to cheapen credit, and expand the supply of loanable funds. In like manner, investors become more optimistic in new technology they want to invest in. They come to banks when they want to borrow more. Instead, banks allowed the interest rate to go up, and the central bank becomes involved by injecting enough credit to keep the interest rate from rising. In the presence of an on going boom, the way to prevent the boom from becoming FRIEDRICH HAYEK 5 an uncontrollable inflationary spiral was to stop increases in the quantity of money, or at least reduce the rate to the rate of growth of production, ...but [i]t does not follow that we should not stop a real deflation (Cochran, 2011, p. 276). Mencken gave the opinion which he felt was right regarding the message Abraham Lincoln presented at the Gettysburg Address, by criticizing it as being eloquent , poetry and said that its beauty undercuts its logic , sense and truth .(Mencken 1920, 775). However, it was not true because during the speech in Gettysburg, Lincoln proved to the people that he was not just saying these things because they was eloquent and had beauty , but, because he had plans for the growth of the nation after the Civil War. Explain how each of these factors affects the cost of money. In your discussion, explain why a hospital s bond rating is important and describe the different levels. (You can use any bond rating agency for analysis). Productive opportunities are the supply and demand of capital are based on the business s profitability. The higher the profits the higher the interest rate. Conversely , the lower the profitability the lower the interest rate. The ability to borrow money is enhanced if the lender perceives the business as profitable and the risk is lower. Time preferences are based on their time for consumption and solely by personal preferences. This is dependent on the needs of the investor. The basis of this is if the investor wishes to save his money for the future, that investor may accept a lower return for future consumption. An investor who has the need for high consumption (needs money in the short term), will lend the money only if the interest rate is high. The needs of the investor will play into the ability for a business to borrow money. If investors need long term, future returns, then interest rates would lower, if the investor needs money in the short term the interest paid to attract the investor and their capital will need to be higher. In the past one year and a half, oil prices have been cut in half and oil executives have predicted it will be years before oil prices return to $100 per barrel. The major causes of the downturn are the declining prices of a barrel of oil, which is as a result of the strong U.S. dollar, oversupply, OPEC and declining demand. Contrary to popular belief, not all acts of manipulation are inherently immoral or solely pragmatic. Initially he sets himself a bad impression to the audience by being brash and irresponsible. Prince Hal s relationship to Falstaff and company was a tool for him in order to create for himself a notorious image which he could later shed and expose his true valor. At the end of Act 1, Scene 2, Hal, through his soliloquy, shows that he has a completely different perspective on his own actions, conceding that they are unsuitable for a King but that he is engaging in this behaviour for a clear political purpose. Hal uses the central metaphor of the sun in his speech: Yet herein will I imitate the sun (1.2.157) and creating imagery of the sun appearing from the clouds, symbolising his glorious rise from his behaviour: Being wanted, he may be more wondered at/By breaking through the foul and ugly mists (1.2.161 62). • 14. Go Tell It On The Mountain Go Tell It on the Mountain is a story than many African Americans can relate too. Author James Baldwin paints a picture of what the post Civil War era was for former slaves and their families. Many African Americans moved north in areas such as Harlem to find better job opportunities and to escape the harsh treatment of the Jim Crow laws in the South. As black families were moving to the North, many saw this as an opportunity to start over. It was a sentiment of being reborn again. That is why I believe the Pentecostal church was very attractive to many African Americans. The Pentecostal church gave the African American community a sense of relief. It was an outlet from the harsh and cruel treatment that was distributed on a daily basis. The Pentecostal gave the black community hope just like how Moses led the Israelites out of Egypt. There is a parallel to the Pentecost that the church would lead people to a better life and after their time on Earth is over. One of the main themes discussed in the book is silence. Silence was mainly discussed in the section of Gabriel s Prayer . Gabriel is a preacher in the novel. He was once a very ambitious and wild who felt like he was on top of the world and nothing could stop him. In this part of the book, his sister, Florence is crying at the altar. This gave him a flashback to when he was crying on a tree he often sees on a daily basis. He was waiting for a sign from God to cleanse him of all his sin but hears ... • 16. Glossophobia Is The Fear Of Public Speaking Importance of Communication Glossophobia is the fear of public speaking. The average person ranks the fear of public speaking higher than the fear of death. According to the National Institute of Mental Health over 74% of people suffer from speech anxiety (Brain, 2016) . This is a sad statistic being that communication is the backbone of our society. It is what allows us to connect with others. Without communication skills, we would not be able to form relationships, whether in our personal or professional lives. We, as a society, tend to think that communication is only verbal. However, communication includes nonverbal, written, even listening, as well as our body language. In fact, over 70% of our communication is nonverbal. In this class I hope to improve on my interpersonal communication by learning ways to overcome my fear and setting new standards in the way I communicate with others. In my personal life, improper communication has led to more than one situation that caused hurt to someone I love. Likewise, I have been on the receiving end of hurt directly as a result of poor communication. Currently, if I were to rank my comfortability in speaking in front of the class, I would say it would be a 4 out of 10. I know many people would think it would be higher, but the fact of the matter is I have an anxiety when it comes to public speaking. Being an extroverted personality often leads people to believe I would have no problem speaking in public, but when the spotlight is on, it is an entirely different story. The moment I know I must get up in front of a group of people, I start to feel dread, my stomach goes into knots, my heart starts to race, and my palms get clammy. I always try to be the first speaker so that these feelings of dread can disappear sooner than later. Ironically, after I finish speaking (assuming it went well) I feel a sense of accomplishment. There is a remarkable sense of pride that comes with effectively communicating to your peers and being well received. There are numerous theories about the philosophy behind these laws and punishments, and the reasons we implement them. Emile Durkheim and Karl Marx s perspectives on the law are significantly different. David Garland agrees with this and writes, penal measures are shaped not just by patterns of criminality themselves linked to the conditions of life of marginal groups and their relation to other classes but primarily by governmental perceptions of the poor as a social problem and the preferred strategies for their treatment (page 134). In the late 1980 s and early 1990 s, drug use became a major concern for most Americans. As the War on Drugs and Just Say No campaign were being thrust into the spotlight by the government and media, the public became more aware of the scope of drug use and abuse in this country. The federal and states governments quickly responded by creating and implementing more harsh and punitive punishments for drug offenses. Most of these laws have either remained unchanged or become stricter in the years since then. According to the Durkheimian perspective, the public sees drug use as an unacceptable behavior and recognizes it as a threat to morality and values. As such, drug users must be punished in order to restore societal harmony and deter future offenses. The increasingly punitive reaction to drug use in the 1980 s can be seen as a reaction to the public s increasing perception that drugs are a threat to the moral fabric of society. By inflicting severe punishment on drug offenders, the community is satisfied with the knowledge that drug addicts are paying for ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Human Activities And Its Effects On The Environment Essay Abstract Singapore and Malaysia are deeply affected with situations such as haze in the atmosphere due to several causes that are mainly due to human activities. The interesting part about the issue is that human activities are done in recklessness and in turn affect other human activities in the process. Human activities such as education proves that human beings are not like any other living organisms on the planet. Hence, we notice that education has to go on just like other activities which include economic development and the health industry. Moreover, there are other causes of the haze which entails the natural calamities such as heavy rainfall and tsunami. The industrial activities have been affecting the geographical environment of the two countries negatively. Hence, judging by this, life becomes very difficult for both human and animals as their health is at risk. If the issue is addressed effectively then there will be a great improvement on health, education and economy in the two countries. Keywords: haze, health, tsunami, industrial activities. • 24. The Impact Of Consciousness On Modern Day Psychology The study of consciousness in modern day psychology is becoming increasingly difficult to explain. In the early days of consciousness studies it may have been explained as our experience or awareness (Blackmore, 2010). However, over a number of years, there have been many psychologists who have contributed many important theories towards the explanation of how consciousness works, and its initial existence. As Chalmers states: There is nothing that we know more intimately than conscious experience, but there is nothing harder to explain (Chalmers, 1995 p.200). Being one of the leading philosophers in consciousness, David Chalmers introduced the idea of the Hard Problem in 1994. Chalmers defined the hard problem as: The questions of how physical processes in the brain give rise to subjective experience (Chalmers, 1995 p.63). Chalmers suggested that he found it difficult to understand how a small mass of grey matter such as the brain could produce conscious experience. These ideas of a hard problem in consciousness were rejected by a number of theorists, which will be discussed later in the essay. Another idea which Chalmers has put forward is the zombie. A zombie, according to Chalmers is a being identical to you and I, speaks like you, acts like you, but is not conscious (Blackmore, 2010). A zombie contains no qualia (a physical conscious experience). The idea of the zombie put forward by Chalmers is extremely important in the explanation of consciousness and has been ... • 25. Comparing Three Different Classes of Vertebrates Introduction Chordates are an animal phylum that is classified by four main characteristics that they all obtain over the course of their lifespans. The first characteristic is the pharyngeal slits, which can be found in non vertebrates, allow substances to enter and exit (Speer 2000). The dorsal nerve cord serves as a connection between the brain and other muscles (Speer 2000). The notochord can be found below the nerve cord and acts as a support system (Speer 2000). Finally, the post anal tail comes out from the body from the opening of the anus (Speer 2000). One major characteristic that distinguishes Vertebrates from invertebrates is the backbone that is present in their bodies. Vertebrates also have two pair of appendages and have bilateral symmetry (Adojaan 2005). Along with a fully developed organ system, Vertebrates have a central and peripheral nervous system and a closed circulatory system (Adojaan 2005). This lab report compares Amphibia, Reptilia, and Mammalia in order to outline the similarities and differences between the many vertebrate classes. By comparing and contrasting theses classes, a further understanding and knowledge of Vertebrates can be gained. Part A Class Amphibia, more commonly known as amphibians, have several features that set them apart as a unique Class. Organisms found within the Class Amphibia are cold blooded and have very smooth skin (Prakash 2014). Amphibians can be found on both land and water, which is necessary in order to keep ... • 26. Application Of An Enterprise Architecture Introduction Most organizations have different types of systems that have been implemented and being used for different purposes over the year of their operations. In this day and age, technologies seem to change rapidly with executives and managers finding it difficult to get a pictorial view of the existing systems whenever a new system is being implemented. The primary purpose of an enterprise architecture is to integrate the Information Technology (IT) assets across different departments of an organization and in order to create blueprints that will define the current organizational structure and the targeted structure. There are a couple of system development models among which is the System Development Life Cycle (SDLC). SDLC is a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Anaya and Ortiz (2005), defined enterprise architecture as a blueprint that provides a common view of the primary resources of any enterprise (people, processes and technology) and how they integrate to provide the primary drivers of the enterprise. As a tool for engineering, the enterprise architecture defines specific roles and responsibilities which are assigned to various personnel of the organization that must be followed in order to accomplish the objective of the organization. As a management tool, a manager will be able to visualize the connections or relationships between operating process, resources, information systems across different functions of the enterprise. Herbivores need to s large amount of chewing to eventually break down cellulose walls, thus exposing starchy contents and also to increase the surface area of cell walls that are exposed to microbes, which can digest cellulose. The digestive tract starts at the kangaroo s jaw to suit the kangaroo s grazing habits with the snout being elongated. Kangaroo teeth endure a lot of wear and tear. The forward drift of molars guarantees that the teeth are not in occlusion allowing for a durability of dentition for a long period of time as it shoves the other molars towards the front, forcing the worn molars in front to move out. The stomach of a kangaroo is a long, tubular, colon like organ that consists of two main sections, which include the enlarged fore stomach and the hind stomach. The fore stomach is split into two chambers, which include the sacciform and tubiform. The ventral fold separates both chambers. The sacciform a storage compartment, has been reduced in size over time through evolution. The tubiform fore stomach is mostly used for fermentation; however, microbial fermentation takes part in both sections of the fore stomach. The saclike front chamber of the stomach contains bacteria, fungi and protozoa that initiate the process of fermentation that is essential for the kangaroo to digest its food ... She explains how she believes achievement tests can t capture things like intent and passion which is what she strives to capture in her writing. This agreement helped stave of a full fledged civil war, but at the same time it reduced the governments ability to conduct any real political or economic reforms. Despite this new agreement President Hadi was ever more determined to ensure no one faction gained too much power within the new federal system. The strange case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, is a book written in a specific period of time. However, one can relate this book to the period it was written. But can a book say as much about a period as a period can about a book? Truly, in their own way, they reflect one another by the elements which drove humanity then and still drives it now good and evil. Those elements are the crux of Jekyll and Hyde and the Victorian era: the duality of oneself as good but also wanting to satisfy the evil fantasies that reside in one s imagination. Dr. Jekyll, a well respected person, spent most of his life keeping his evil urges at bay. One day he creates a potion that physically turns him into a smaller stature, mysterious, evil Mr. Hyde. While Dr. Jekyll is transformed as Mr. Hyde, he can satisfy his twisted desires without a glimpse of remorse. This goes on long enough that, despite Dr. Jekyll s remorse when he s back to his normal self, and his desire to end Mr. Hyde, he starts spontaneously turning into Mr. Hyde until he must take the potion just to stay conscious That same duality is embedded in the time Jekyll and Hyde was written. It contains those same elements of good and evil with the addition of smoggy streets. This prestigious modernist writer came from a family of wealthy German Jewish immigrants, who unfortunately passed away. Her mother died of cancer in 1888, and her father, a wealthy and known merchant, passed in 1891. When Gertrude was still a young child, her family moved from Pennsylvania and went back to Europe. Stein spent her first years in Vienna and later in Paris. In the year of 1879, she went back to America, and settled in Oakland, California. Her brother Leo is one of her greatest influences. • 38. The Standard Of Living During The Industrial Revolution... Henry Ziegler 10044371 Prof. Frank Lewis ECON 231 Thursday, November 20, 2014 Analysis on the Standard of Living in the Industrial Revolution Debate Before the Industrial Revolution, Great Britain s economy relied heavily on agriculture, which at that point of time was based a flawed system dating back to the Middle Ages. This system, known as the open field system, showed agricultural inefficiencies, and was disallowing of innovation. These inefficiencies eventually led to the privatization of land for agriculture, in an effort to solve what is now commonly referred to as the tragedy of the commons . Great Britain was now moving forward, and as the country (and continent) began enclosing their land, Britain began a period of modernization, with new technologies that would increase productivity in industry to a level never before seen. This is the period commonly referred to as the Industrial Revolution, and was an era of unprecedented growth in industry from the middle of the 18th century until around the middle of the 19th century. In 1760, 53% of the British population worked in agriculture. By 1840, that had dropped to 29%. The evolution from water and wind power to steam engines, as well as the creation of many pieces of machinery for the textile industry (such as the Spinning Jenny, which reduced the production time on yarn) vastly improved British manufacturing of goods, and the reliance on agriculture continued to drop. Cultural and religious beliefs often dictate family structures, and the beliefs of those cultures and religions, especially regarding genders, are then reflected in power dynamics. This happens because cultures manipulate people s perspective of viewing genders because of their religious beliefs. Some families are shaped according to this belief that men are more important and the boys in a family get more privileges and more attention than the girls. Different cultures and their beliefs make the boys and the men look more powerful and cause the girls to think that they are inferior to the boys. In Hmong and in many other households, boys are seen as more important. They are the ones who will carry the family traditions and name to next generation. Girls are seen as someone else s property as they will get married and go to someone else s family and will carry their name and be a part of that family. Girls since childhood are taught that the house they were born in and are raised in is not their actual house. Their house will be where their husband lives. As for what personal identity is Locke states, depends on consciousness, not on substance or a soul (John Locke: An Essay Concerning Human Understanding). Locke seems to define memories as the source of a consciousness in his chapter of Identity and Diversity. In addition, Locke believes that consciousness is independent from all substances, but cannot exist independently without a body or a mind. However, that doesn t mean that consciousness is confined to a particular body or mind. For example, in Locke s Chapter XXVII Of Identity and Diversity states, Upon separation of this little finger, should this consciousness go along with the little finger, and leave the rest of the body, it is evident the little finger would be the person, the same person; and self then would have nothing to do with the rest of the body. . Locke asserts that this applies to all parts of the body. This would suggest that if a person fell into a coma, they would be dead according to lock. • 46. Criminal Responsibility In Criminal Behavior Research Criminal responsibility revolves around intent, which is a theme in debate on culpability. The study to be reviewed was led by Williams et al (2010), which found at the age of 16, 46% of offenders interviewed reported TBI. The main cause of the TBI was violence. Reports of more than three TBIs were associated with a greater proportion of violence in criminal offences, suggesting number of TBI is positively correlated with number of aggressive acts. Research in the past similarly indicates individuals who experience traumatic brain injury (TBI) are more likely to commit future criminal acts (Raine et al, 2005). Individuals with TBI affecting the frontal lobes are at an increased risk of impulsive aggression and reduced affective empathy (Brower Price, 2001), characteristics evident in frequent offenders (Jolliffe Farrington, 2004). This suggests an increased risk of criminal behaviour, post TBI, especially when the frontal area is damaged. Thus, can TBI be used to reach the not guilty verdict in court, by reasons of diminished responsibility or can it be argued other premorbid variables at work? A Young Woman s Fantasy in The Turn of the Screw Essay A Young Woman s Fantasy in The Turn of the Screw The Turn of the Screw, by Henry James, is an odd story about a young woman who, leaving her small country home for the first time, takes a job as a governess in a wealthy household. Shortly after her arrival, she begins to suffer from insomnia and fancies that she sees ghosts roaming about the grounds. James is a master story teller and, at times, the complexities of the story make it difficult to follow. At the end of her interview, after she agreed to these stipulations, we are told that when ...he held her hand, thanking her for the sacrifice, she already felt rewarded (6). This description proves that the new governess is in love with her employer.
