Greek paintings were commonly found on vases depicting natural figures and battle scenes. They were created using fresco, encaustic, or panel painting techniques. Fresco involved applying pigments to wet plaster while encaustic used hot wax. Panel paintings were done on wood. Specific vase shapes included pelikes, lekanis, lebes gamikos and kraters. Tombs also contained paintings like the Tomb of the Diver. Styles evolved through the classical, Hellenistic, Romanesque, Gothic and medieval periods using techniques like mosaics, stained glass and trompe l'oeil illusions.
