Spanish Colonialism on the History of Puerto Rican People...
Spanish Colonialism on the History of Puerto Rican People
Puerto Rico . The name immediately brings to mind images of a beautiful lush tropical island of
enchantment. The name Puerto Rico usually does not conjure the image of Taino Indians or African
slaves, yet these populations have great importance in laying the foundation for the notion of identity
of Puerto Ricans. In contemporary debates of Puerto Rican identity, it is essential to examine the
history of the island to determine the effects of Spanish colonialism on Puerto Rican identity. As he
demonstrates in his article Puerto Rico: the Four Storeyed Country , Jose L. Gonzalez discusses the
notion of identity as a series of storeys, one built upon another in order further ... Show more content

17). The island s discovery did not lead to a quick occupation, though. Juan Ponce de Leon, in search
of gold, made the first effort to settle on the island in 1508. In the next twenty years, the Taino
population became decimated while forced to labor in prospecting gold, a phase that ended in this
time, succumbing to disease and a breakdown in their social network.
An important implication of this initial occupation of the island by Spaniards is the imposition of the
Spanish language. Because the Taino population could be counted in small amounts and Spanish had
established their presence on the island by instilling their language as the only accepted language, in
the name of Spain, a first storey was constructed in the notion of identity of the Puerto Rican. The
Tainos had been moved out and taken over, the Spanish had moved in and started to let their culture
infiltrate into that of the Taino, and now things were changing.
Because the gold rush on the island lost its surge, the Spanish turned its attention to the agricultural
success they could have with the island. However, as a result of their occupation, they lacked the labor
force to effectively move an agricultural economy. In order to replenish the population and create a
strong labor force, the Spanish took part in what others around Puerto Rico had begun to do, import
cheap labor, namely African slaves. As the profit grew from cash crops sugar emerging as the most

Who Is Coach Boone
I m a winner. I m going to win. Coach Boone
I believe that if coach Yoast stayed as head coach and Herman Boone was his assistant, the team
would never become champions. Boone s coaching strategy is direct, simple, and authoritarian. He
clearly establishes a sense of urgency, creates a guiding tandem that consists of himself and Yoast,
communicates his vision adequately, removes the obstacles of team discord and lack of training,
systematically plans for and achieves wins on a game by game basis, avoids declaring victory
prematurely, and anchors changes in the team s culture. He asserts top layers and subordinates that he
is indisputably in charge. Boone communicates his vision to have a winning team.
Early in the movie, Boone states his opposition to the board s decision to replace Yoast with him,
citing an experience where someone at a previous job had done the same thing to him. When he orders
them to learn about each of their teammates, he is positioning them to solve their interracial tensions
but not trying to foist a solution upon them. However, I think this mix of different qualities that both
coaches possess, represents a perfect coach for the team (if combined in ... Show more content on

One of my favorite moments in the movie is where coach Boone wakes up everyone in the middle of
the night and takes them to Gettysburg for a run. When they arrive at the graveyard he says ...if we do
not come together on this hollow ground, we too will be destroyed like they were... (Bruckheimer
Yakin, 2000). In this movie football is a mean for behavior change. History has taught us that we tend
to remember winners, and that is why we remember the Titans. They not only won the State
Championship but with an invaluable help from their coaches the team members managed to attain
racial integration not only on the field but also in the

K-Pop Art Performance Essay
K Pop: The Raise of Art Performances
Music has become a daily consumption of modern society; Either the high or the bottom class,
everybody loves music. Among all music genre, pop music dominates the playlists of music lovers.
The Instruments that are widely used in pop music is familiar, so that the melody, rhythm, and the beat
producedcan be easily accepted by the public. Coupled with simple yet eye catching lyric, also easily
to memorize, give another value to the pop music genre. However, there is one kind of pop music
which is now caught world s attention, that is K Pop or Korean Pop. Korean Pop is a part of the
Korean Wave. Accordimg toSue Jin Lee (2011), she said that, Korean Wave refers to the significantly
increased popularity of South Korean culture around the world , all the culture, inclluding dramas and
films production, language, and literature, and also music industry; and K Pop focuses on the music

Here s to the Crazy One: Kanye West
Kanye Omari West, an Atlanta born Chicago raised rapper, producer, fashion designer, entrepreneur
has been in the public eye since the beginning of his career and for all the wrong reasons at that.
Whether it is for calling out the former U.S. President George Bush over the Hurricane Katrina crisis
or interrupting Taylor Swift s award acceptance speech in front of the world. He has been called crazy,
egotistic, brash and outlandish, yet he has managed to win hearts of millions and reach the self
proclaimed god status . It is Kanye West s courage to be himself that has made him a fan favorite and
an engenderer of pop culture. Kanye West realizes the platform he has achieved and the power he

West a great artist is the fact that he has never been shy of his identity. Kanye West burst on to the
music scene when 50 Cent was bringing gangsta rap back and on the extreme contrary Ye was talking
about the mundane aspects of his life such as love, relationships, dreams and middle class upbringing.
Tim m West, an educator and performance artist, recollects his thoughts about Kanye West in his
article Hard to Get Straight . Kanye West is the tell all confessional animal exposes his dirt so no one
else can dig him into a hole (115) emphasizing the fact that during his early years in music many
questioned Kanye and his credibility to be a rapper . He did not fit into the rapper mold; Ye was quiet,
calm and collected. Many described him as the Kid with the Pink Polo and Backpack However, his
music spoke to the masses as he brought a different tone to what Hip Hop/Rap genre used to be. It was
still the hard truth about growing up in a middle class black household but by positioning himself as
the middle pole between hood rat poses and caviar dreams, he simultaneously reconciles and underlies
tensions that simmer the lives of his fellow Negren.

Aristotle s Use Of Ethos Pathos Logos
Throughout my studies at Seton Hall, particularly in Journey of Transformation and Christianity
Culture and Dialogue we covered the works of Aristotle. It is interesting to learn how the Greeks were
among the first to use persuasion. Aristotle defined rhetoric as the faculty of observing in any given
case, the available means of persuasion (17). Aristotle believed that persuasion consist of artistic and
inartistic proofs. When giving a persuasive speech we are able to control certain aspects of it such as
the delivery, evidence and word usage which are the artistic proofs. The persuader has the ability to
get creative in order to engage the audience and get his message across. However, the speaker is also
subject to certain constraints such as the occasion or the time that has been allocated to the speaker ...

Then we have Pathos which uses an emotional appeal in order to get an emotional response. Recently,
Texas suffered a suffered a severe catastrophe because of Hurricane Harvey. This led to many homes,
buildings and families torn apart. Recent Commercial Ads are depicting these images in order for the
public to feel sorrow and donate funds for the cause. Many individuals do not want to live with the
guilt of not helping out and so they decide to donate for a good cause, thus eliminating that regret.
Finally, we have this idea of logos which is the idea of using logical or rational appeals (17). Lagos
uses things such as polls, facts or statistics to appeal to the audience. A recent example of Lagos would
be the campaign promises that President Donald Trump made to the American people. One of them
was the he promised a 4% GDP growth during his tenure. For investors or the ordinary person, this
creates speculation that the future of the economy will be bright. When I am preparing a persuasive
speech, whether it be in the classroom or in the real world, it is imperative for me to keep in mind
ethos, pathos and logos in the back of mind in order to achieve

Democracy in America Essay
Democracy in America
Throughout the course of history, mankind has been recorded to corrupt itself. Men have grown tired
of simply surviving; they have had to take and conquer others. Absolute monarchies control wealth,
land, and even lives of men. The conditions of the people were solely dependent on the conditions of
the one who was in power in that particular place and time. History has proven that most men rule
unwisely in their kingdoms. To avoid tyrannical rule, some make an attempt to set up a government in
which the people ruled themselves. This form of government is called a democracy, or rule of the
people. History has also revealed through the Greeks and the French Revolution, that a democracy that
gives complete power ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As a result, it was not received as well as the first part, except in England where it was acclaimed
highly.2
Tocqueville believes that history progresses with the inevitable growth of equality of conditions, and
he sees America as the furthest progression of this growth. The extraordinary level of equality can be
both a help and a hindrance to freedom. On the one hand, one cannot have complete freedom. As
social conditions become more equal, the number increases who, although they are neither rich
enough nor powerful enough to exercise any great influence over their fellow creatures, have
nevertheless acquired or retained sufficient education and fortune to satisfy their own wants. 1 Yet at
the same time, Tocqueville recognizes than in almost every situation, freedom is endangered by an
overly ardent passion for equality. 3 This, independently of equality itself, tends powerfully to divide
men, to lead them to mistrust the judgment of others, and to seek the light of truth nowhere but in their
own understandings. 1
Tocqueville inaccurately stated the out come of a possible civil war. As long as it only indirectly
assailed by the interpretation of its laws, and as long as its substances is not seriously altered, a change
of opinion, an internal crisis, or a war, may restore all the vigor which it requires. So far is the Federal
Government from acquiring strength, and from threatening the sovereignty of the States, as it grows
older, that I maintain

Obasan, by Joy Kogawa Essay
Obasan, by Joy Kogawa Today, society has become a boisterous world of communication. From
telephone conversations to live Internet chat and e mail, the world has never before been quite so in
touch. In the novel Obasan, by Joy Kogawa, Naomi Nakane does not have technology to
communicate. Instead, she faces the dilemma of communicating at all. From her family, Naomi is
shown the many faceted truths of speech and communication. From strong, silent Obasan, to stubborn,

through speech. As a child, Naomi spends much of her life in non communicative silence, only to help

Unfortunately, for the quiet Naomi, Emily also believes that in order to be at peace with your past you

contingent upon facts, and that everyone needs to be on the same page before healing can begin.
It matters to get the facts straight...Reconciliation can t begin without mutual recognition of the facts,
she said.
Facts? [said Naomi]
Yes, facts. What s right is right. What s wrong is wrong. Health starts somewhere. (Obasan 219)
Naomi cannot comprehend the angle with which her aunt approaches life.
While Naomi may believe reconciliation is in order, she is only discouraged when she looks to see
where speech has placed her Aunt Emily. If Aunt Emily with her billions of letters and articles and
speeches, her tears and her rage, her friends and her committees if all that couldn t bring contentment,
what was the point (Obasan 50). Naomi becomes more and more frustrated when she sees the futile
efforts of her Aunt. Albeit, she does believe that what her Aunt is doing is important for her Aunt, she
cannot see the use if the results of such hard laborious tasks go for naught.
All of Aunt Emily s words, all her papers, the telegrams and petitions, are like scratchings in the

The Renaissance Period
The argument being put forward in this dissertation is that the Renaissance in Europe, with specific
emphasis on Italy, during the 15th Century, was the most influential period in developing the early
modern human society. Many believe that this was due to its almost perfect location between Western
Europe and the Eastern shore of the Mediterranean. By analysing various factors and sources, as well
as different aspects of society, for example political factors and the views of contemporary texts, it
will provide enlightening insight into the changes made during the Renaissance period and how these
changes are still reverberating. I believe that this question is an important one to study and to answer
correctly and accurately because it means that we can trance back the origins of our society today and
how it has evolved from, arguably, a more primitive one in terms of breakthroughs and technology.
First of all, it is important to understand what the Renaissance period was all about and what it
encumbered. The Renaissance period (French: Rebirth ) is a progressive cultural movement that lasted
for roughly 3 centuries, from the 14th to the 17th (roughly 1330 1600), and is often referred to as the
bridge between the Middle Ages and a Modern Era (*1). The Rebirth of a society, specifically Italy,
was recognition of the past but also that it was separate from the present in terms of belief or ideology
for example. This meant that a transitional phase occurred as past

Airborne Express Case Study
Airborne Express:
Analysis of HBS Case Study
Q1) 1. Threat of New Entry
For the US Express Mail industry, the overall threat of new entry is very low. The following list and
explanation captures the difficulty an entrepreneur might face in trying to penetrate the express mail
market: * High capital requirements: In order to establish an express mail operation, the start up
capital required is too big for an individual to obtain. For example, Federal Express Superhub in
Memphis has 2.4 million square feet of floor space and can hold 147 planes. UPS s new hub will cost
approximately $860 million. In addition, a cargo plane sells for $90 million. * Economies of scale:
newly established postal service will have tough time ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
3. Buyer Power
In the US Express Mail industry, the buyers fit into two segments: businesses and individuals. Express
Mail has become the industry standard in some industries such as banking, consulting and financial
services since the items inside the package had a high ratio of value to weight. Businesses needed to
be able to track the packages and be assured that it arrives on time. That being said, businesses were
often high volume buyers since the shipping managers identified which firm to deal with and
concentrate the high volume of shipments to that firm for a particular project or for the time being.
Sales representatives from the firms had to negotiate with stingy shipping managers who sometimes
demanded the upwards of 50% or more discounts. The existence of many large volume buyers meant
that the buyer power is high. Similarly, individuals also held high buyer power since the Big Three
and other second tier postal services offered largely undifferentiated services.
On the other hand, the heavy discounts granted for businesses means that the express service saves the
buyer the money. And the quality of service is important to the buyers since the mail contains valuable
information or items. These two factors result in low buyer power.
4. Intensity of Rivalry
The express companies delivered tremendous amount of packages. The big three players, Federal
Express, UPS, and Airborne Express, collectively delivered more than five million

The World And Expanse Of Time
Throughout the semester, evaluating different eras and event across the world and expanse of time, we
have studied how individual players and their actions contribute to our understanding of history itself.
Many of our readings were historical accounts centralized on the lives of single players, and these
players roles in greater historical events.
The outbreak and entirety of WWI, serves as an example of how many individual players, and their
actions, contributed to the overall outcome of an all out war. In class, we discussed how there were a
number of major players whom helped contribute to the outbreak and subsequent events of WW1.
One of the key actors we examined, was the Emperor to Russia at the time, Nicholas II, and the
qualities attributed to him as an individual. These are the qualities which may have not only led to
Russia s involvement in WWI, but also can be attributed to Russia s loss in Russo Japanese War,
further destabilization of Russia s central government under Nicholas II, and ultimately the collapse of
the Russian Monarchy, all culminating in the 1917 Russian Revolution.
Nicholas II was the first born child of Emperor Alexander III of Russia, and being so, his upbringing
was a rather quite and isolated, though he maintained a close relationship with both his father and
mother. In 1881, Alexander II, Nicholas grandfather (and Emperor at the time) was assassinated by
revolutionaries, quickly making Nicholas heir apparent at the age of thirteen. Though

information threats to the Card Service Industries. I got my three major information security threats

It was concluded that the height of the atrium and the fan locations have obvious effect on the efficient
abstraction. Atrium with height more than 30 m with exhaust fans located towards the ends may
require attention to control the smoke abstraction efficiently.
Yi, Hou, Li and Feng Chow [13] study the relation between the atrium aspect ratio under different heat
release rate of fire the flooding time flow of smoke occurs and, 32 simulations were performed using a
model, FDS (Fire Dynamics Simulator, Version 3). Table 2.4 shows the size of the atrium and HRR of

The Odyssey Comparison
The Odyssey Comparison The Hero s Journey is portrayed and widely known in many of the most
popular films, songs, and novels. The Odyssey follows this format, and many of these entertainment
pieces were inspired by this epic, such as The Chronicles of Narnia. In the Odyssey, Odysseus is led
through many different adversities while trying to return home from the Trojan War. He finds himself
and his crew in many situations that lead to death or put them in danger, before eventually making it
home and being reunite with his family with the help of the goddess Athena. In the Chronicles of

In Narnia, a change in character could clearly be seen from the beginning to the end of the story. Each
of the kids had learned their own lesson from their journey, and became better, wiser people from this
journey. However, in The Odyssey, Odysseus did not show any change. He continued to make the
same mistakes of getting his crew into trouble, and did not come home a changed man with different
morals than he had left with. Furthermore, the children in Narnia did not want to return home from
their journey, it had happened by accident. In The Odyssey, Odysseus had been working on returning
home for 20 years and wants to return home as soon as possible. The differences between these two
stories were made to differentiate between the different tales, instead of having each story be the exact
same setup. These differences are what allow the Hero s Journey to be used as a basis for each story,
but still allow the stories to be different and have their own characteristics. Ultimately, the two pieces
follow the same structure, but still have their own differences within this structure. The Chronicles of
Narnia and The Odyssey share both similarities and differences between the two pieces; both having
similar events that take places of certain archetypes, but also having different variations of a certain
situation in the story. Narnia follows the Hero s Journey closely and moreover

In the past two weeks, I ve had family death and family hospitalized which caused a great amount of

being hospitalized since it was something unordinary. I didn t expect this visit to be one of great

explanation of this surgery, my grandfather was not too fond of the process. But for his health, it was
necessary. After the surgery had taken place, his colon wasn t awake just yet because of the high
dosage of morphine the surgeons administered to him. The awakening of the colon is a tedious process

There are many different ideas and thoughts on religion and anti religion. There is not a certain set
amount of religions, but rather a broad spectrum of them. In Wise Blood, the author Flannery O
Connor, created a character who has developed different beliefs throughout his life. Hazel Motes, or
Haze, was born into a Christian family with a grandfather who was a preacher. He had intent to
become one himself until WW2 drastically altered his beliefs. Haze entered the war as a Christian, but

From the time he gets back from WW2, he creates the Church Without Christ which is him preaching
his anti religious beliefs on the streets. Throughout his time in Taulkinham, Haze keeps seeing Jesus in
his mind, sees signs of Christianity everywhere, and is mistaken as a preacher on multiple occasions.
In the essay, Jesus, Stab Me in the Heart! : Wise Blood, Wounding, and Sacramental Aesthetics, the
author Robert H. Brinkmeyer, talks about Hazel not being able to escape Jesus. Identifies Haze as a
Christian malgre lui whose integrity lies in his not being able to escape from his haunting vision of
Christ (Brinkmeyer, 71). As Brinkmeyer suggests here, Hazel continues to see Jesus in his mind, but
as a ragged figure. The boy didn t need to hear it. There was already a black wordless conviction in
him that the way to avoid Jesus was to avoid sin. He knew by the time he was twelve years old that he
was going to be a preacher. Later he saw Jesus move from tree to tree in the back of his mind, a wild
ragged figure motioning him to turn around and come off into the dark where he was not sure of his
footing, where he might be walking on the water and not know it and then suddenly know it and
drown (O Connor, 16). Along with these appearances, Hazel encounters many religious and Christian
related signs. These appearing signs create

Primary Heating Water Circuit At The Generators
Primary Cooling Water Circuit In The Generators :
The treated water used for cooling of the stator winding, phase connectors and bushings is designated
as primary water in order to distinguish it from the secondary coolant (raw water, condensator etc.).
The primary water is circulated in a closed circuit and dissipates the absorbed heat to the secondary
cooling in the primary water cooler. The pump is supplied with in primary water cooler. The pump is
supplied with in the primary water tank and delivers the water to the generator via the following flow
paths:
Flow path I :
Flow path I cools the stator winding. This flow path passes through water manifold on the exciter end
of the generator and from there to the stator bars via insulated bar is connected to the manifold by a
separate hose. Inside the bars the cooling water flows through hollow strands. At the turbine end, the
water is passed through the similar hoses to another water manifold and then return to the primary
water tank. Since a single pass water flow through the stator is used, only a minimum temperature rise
is obtained for both the coolant and the bars. Relatively movements due to the different thermal
expansions between the top and the bottom bars are thus minimized.

Flow path II cools the phase connectors and the bushings. The bushing and the phase connectors

explored and how they have been shaped by our social and cultural context. A recently produced Walt
Disney film will be identified which portrays these standards of heteronormative gender structures. By
analysing the film and making reference to an independent source, the background and history of this
example will also be explored to determine if and why Disney films continually perpetuate
heteronormative discourses of gender using the media.
Steyn and van Zyl (2009:3) define heteronormativity as the institutionalisation of heterosexuality and

Heteronormative discourses which exist in society can be seen in examples involving media.
Advertisements, films and television all carry some form of heteronormative construct in their content
which is exposed to large audiences of men and woman of all ages. Such heteronormativity and
gender constructs perpetuated by the media will be explored using an example of a recently released
Walt Disney film called Frozen (Buck Lee 2013). As evident in many other films created by the
Disney franchise, the film s characters are made to depict a rich and exclusive heterosexual landscape
(Martin Kazyak 2009:332).
The film Frozen (Buck Lee 2013) follows a plot about a princess who goes on a journey with the help
of companions to find her estranged sister, whose magical powers that control ice and snow have
confined the kingdom in an eternal winter. Although majority of the film s storyline does not make
reference to heteronormative discourses, there are many scenes and songs performed in the film which
appear to perpetuate heterosexual and ideal gender constructs. This is portrayed both by the creation of
specific body images of the male and

The Old Couple Analysis
The frame story of the old couple is labeled as the dream relationship by what Mel says before he
begins the story, You see, this happened a few months ago, but it s still going on right now, and it
ought to make us feel shame when we talk like we know what we re talking about when we talk about
love. (178) By Mel saying they will feel shame because they talk like they know about love gives the
old couples story a uprising meaning towards love. Saying the old couples relationship is actual love
rather than the stories they have been sharing. Mel then goes on to say, So we transfer them out to

The Importance Of Writing In The Colonial Language
Additionally, it can be used to communicate with other indigenous people who speak different
languages, but understand the same issues of colonialism. In the specific case of some African states,
such as Achebe s Nigeria, the English language became the lingua franca of the national bourgeoisie
representative of the various national ethnicities, on the one hand, and the forces of colonialism and
transnational capital, on the other.
Indeed, postcolonial literature in the colonial language is a double edged sword. Without its use, the
writing may never reach a wide audience, as it is impossible to translate every work into each different
indigenous language. Furthermore, those who have experienced a diaspora after colonization, such as
the Africans who were transported to colonial lands, lost their indigenous language. Their ancestors
grew up with the colonial language, and unless they learn their indigenous language, they have no
choice to write in the colonial language. Yet, writing in the colonial language furthermore reflects the
power that colonists still exert today, that their language must be used to describe the aftereffects of
their subjugation of another country. The colonial language becomes culturally more powerful,
devaluing the native language as it is brought into its domain, domesticated, and accommodated.
Ultimately, the writers must take into consideration the positives and negatives of each approach. They
have the choice to write in either language,

Importance of Grammar Essay
A. Introduction
It is not uncommon to say that grammar instruction plays an important role in language teaching.
Regarding the status and importance of grammar teaching, a variety of opinions have been made.
Batstone (1994) states that language without grammar would be chaotic: countless words without the
indispensable guidelines for how they can be ordered and modified (p. 4). More vividly, Wang (2010)
makes two similes. She compares grammar to the frame of a house, which is a decisive factor to
ensure the solidness of it. Additionally, she regards grammar as a walking stick, whose function is to
help and support students to learn English. Thus, the nature of grammar instruction manifests its own
significance as it helps students ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

its theoretical rationale will be respectively reported in the fourth and fifth part before the final
conclusion is displayed.
B. Evaluation of Miss Wong s Teaching Approach
B(1). Teaching philosophy
It is teachers beliefs rather than their knowledge that have a greater influence on their instruction
(William Burden, 2000). Meighan suggests seven kinks of teachers beliefs about learners: resisters,
receptacles, raw materials, clients, partners, individual explorers and democratic explorers. Unlike the
first three concepts which focus on teachers, the last four require learners active involvement (as cited
in William Burden, 2000). In Miss Wong s teaching approach, a PPP model (i.e., Presentation, Practice
and Production) is generally adopted. She firstly presents target grammatical structure of passive
voice. Then students do some exercises along with teacher s answer checking. However, it seems the
final production step is omitted, resulting in students lacking opportunities to apply the knowledge
into other contexts. From her instruction, we can see Miss Wong tends to regard her students as
receptacles that are required to absorb the items she transmits. What the instruction concerns is
whether students can transform sentences from active to passive or vice verse from a structural level,
which is a typical example of a

Mise En Scene For The Happiness Salesman
I. Short Answer. 1. I am writing about the short film The Happiness Salesman. In this film a newly
single mother is trying to get her fussy crying baby to nap and her doorbell rings. At the door is a

The Esthetic Theory and A Portrait of the Artist as a...
The Esthetic Theory and A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man
In A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, Stephen Dedalus defines beauty and the artist s
comprehension of his/her own art. Stephen uses his esthetic theory with theories borrowed from St.
Thomas Aquinas and Plato. The discourse can be broken down into three main sections: 1) A
definitions of beauty and art. 2) The apprehension and qualifications of beauty. 3) The artist s view of
his/her own work. I will explain how the first two sections of his esthetic theory relate to Stephen.
Furthermore, I will argue that in the last section, Joyce is speaking of Stephen Dedalus and A Portrait
of the Artist as a Young Man as his art.
First, Stephen states the theory that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In that point of Stephen s life, he realized that his desires, and anyone s desires, are only animal
reflexes: We are all animals. I also am an animal. (Pg. 149).
Given that beauty is only intelligible and not physical, It [beauty] awakens, or ought to awaken, or
induces, or ought to induce, an esthetic stasis, an ideal pity or an ideal terror, a stasis called forth. (Pg.
150). Stephen then gives a definition of art, Art is the human disposition of sensible or intelligible
matter for an esthetic end. (Pg. 150). That art is formed from the Gross Earth, meaning the artist s
experiences. Art does not start as something beautiful, but from experiences that are rough and raw.
What transforms these experiences into art is how one can recreate the esthetic emotions felt by the
artist. An example of this is when Stephen sees the Bird Girl when wandering on the shore of the Irish
Sea. He experiences such enlightenment of only the soul and mind: Her eyes had called him and his
soul had leaped at the call. To live, to err, to fall, to triumph, to recreate life out of life. A wild angel
had appeared to him, the angel of mortal youth and beauty, an envoy from the fair courts of life, to
throw open before him in an instant of ecstasy the gates of all the ways of error and glory. (Pg. 123).
This epiphany, according to the esthetic theory, would be considered pure art because Stephen
experienced it esthetically.
The next stage of this discourse,

Music is one of the best stress relievers. Music soothes the soul for people. There are many
instruments that take place to make beautiful music. One of those instruments is a trombone. The
interesting thing about the trombone is that many people played that instrument. Many others prefer to
play a smaller instrument or they over complicate the trombone. Some people describe the trombone
as it is a big instrument. The people that actually play it know the name and how it works. Of course it
is called trombone and the big moving thing is called a slide. Once you learn about the basics of it you

First position is the very top of the slide without moving it. That is the basic position and the first to
learn. Then there is a 2nd position which to find it you just have to pull out about an inch. 3rd position
is when the handle part of the slide is aligned with the bell. 4th is like an 2 inches after that, so forth so
on.
There is also a certain way to hold it and on what shoulder to put it on. The bell will be on your left
shoulder and it would look like a V angle. In order to hold it your left hand position will be with you
thumb behind a tube and three fingers on the first slide brace then one across the slide crossing over
the mouthpiece. That s how you would hold a trombone if you re a beginner.
The trombone is considered a brass instrument in the wind ensemble. The Trombone is played in jazz,
concert, solo, and symphony playing(The Art of Trombone Playing, Page 2). The trombone plays on
the bass clef. It is completely different notes than most woodwind instrument. Trombone has a tone a
level lower than instruments that are played on treble clef. The tenor trombone is played on bass clef
and others are also. The trombones have different tones, for example the bass trombone has a lower
pitch than the tenor trombone. Together these instruments sound in harmony and

various family struggles translate into the protagonist being a societal outcast, who has trouble with
many things that make them different. In The Talented Mr. Ripley, Tom s treatment by his aunt, who

Benefits Of Single-Sex Education
Margaret Kierath
ENGL 1101
3 December 2017
Are there benefits to students experiencing single sex education? In education there are two types of
educational settings, single sex and co ed. The former is where only one gender is taught in either a
school or a classroom and co ed is where both sex intertwine an learn in a classroom or school
together. Single sex education helps the girls or boys learn at their own paste. Some benefits to single
sex educational settings to consider are style of learning, higher education, interest s and how more
independent students from singe sex schools are.
Single sex education has been around for decades; however, within a coeducational setting it started
rapidly growing in 2006. According to Spielhagen and Kohl, in 2006 NASSPE recorded dingle sex
schools in eighteen states. Within five years the number of single sex schooling has become larger. In
order to be able to have single sex education in classrooms there are three regulations. The first
regulation was to make participation voluntary , second was to show that the single sex classes meet
important government objectives , and third provide a comparable co educational classes in a
geographically accessible location . In order for there to be single gender classes the school had to also
give the option of co ed classes as well. Single sex classrooms were put in place because girls and
boys tend to learn differently and take in the information differently then each other.

Back Pain Research Paper
Textbooks have been around for ages, and yet they hold a lot of information, they do not contain all
that is needed. You would think with all the technology textbooks would be extinct by now. Don t you
think its about time they were replaced by some sort of electronic device? A couple of students have
already started using notebook computers instead of textbooks. In this time, textbooks are not as
sufficient since this generation practically runs on technology. With this generation, textbooks can
possibly disappear. Textbooks can weigh up to 15 pounds on a student s back. This weight can cause
backache and later turn into other problems, like scoliosis. This back pain can affect students
concentration. A study done by David Siambanes of the Inland Empire Spine Center in Riverside,
California. The study found that most students said that their back hurt from their backpacks; 64%
reported having back pain some time . In students reporting pain, about 90% said their back pain was

Internet Censorship in China Essay
In the United States, every child, teenager and adult uses Wikipedia, YouTube and Facebook, among
numerous other sites, regularly. The internet is open and uncensored for the most part, other than
parental controls. In China, most, if not all of those types of sites are or have been blocked. As in, you
could not go to them, unless you found some way around the web filters and firewalls the Chinese
government runs in their country. While China defends their practice of internet censorship, based on
protecting the people, heavy internet censorship is a block to free speech and impedes economic and
social development in the 21st century. China says it has its reasons for censoring its internet. Wang
Chen, minister for the State Council ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The aim is to tighten political control and get Internet users to censor themselves by bringing them
face to face with their censors or their agents. (Anonymous) Reporters without Boarders further talked
of why these regulations present a new block for free speech. What Netizen will dare to criticize the
regime after meeting the person who could put them behind bars for one wrong word? (Anonymous)
Reporters Without Borders is further stating that someone who might talk about something the
government might find questionable will not do it at all if that person is met by someone who could
put them in prison. On the other hand, the US does not actively regulate the internet, relying on the
public to regulate content on the internet, with little government intervention. The internet in the US is
relatively open, whereas in China, information on the internet is suppressed based on what the Chinese
government deems appropriate or inappropriate. Hillary Clinton, US Secretary of State, has stated,
Countries that heavily censor the Net are creating a new Information Curtain to rival the old Iron
Curtain of the Cold War era. (Anderson) Clinton talked more of the US s position on internet
censorship. Further, New technologies do not take sides, said Clinton. But the United States does. The
US supports an open internet. (Anderson)
Corporations that move into China have long recognized that internet censorship is a fact of life. In

Socrates Definition Of Justice Essay
Justice
What is justice? This is a question that men have struggled with answering for centuries. Justice
should be defined for the sake of all people, especially by rulers who attempt to make fair laws so that
their society functions in an orderly fashion. In Book 1 of The Republic, Plato attempts to define
exactly what justice is. To help determine this definition, he speaks through the philosopher
protagonist of Socrates. Justice is first brought up in The Republic during Socrates trip to Piraeus.
While traveling Socrates ends up gathering with his interlocutors and together, they talk about justice
and how one would define it. Socrates debates with the men about the definition of justice and is
presented with a definition of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Republic presents two very different views of justice as argued by two skilled thinkers. The
beginning of the discussion starts off with Thrasymachus explaining what exactly he believes justice
is; justice is nothing other than the advantage of the stronger. (338c) Although Thrasymachus
definition is clear, Socrates attempts to spite him by using a wild comparison, by saying If
Polydamamas, the pancratiast, is stronger than we are and beef is advantageous for his body, then this
food is also advantageous and just for us who are weaker than he is. (338c) This statement from
Socrates disgusts Thrasymachus because Thrasymachus was simply referring to stronger in the sense
of being a ruler, not strong in the sense of being physically larger. To counter Socrates, Thrasymachus
explains how different societies are ruled throughout the world whether it be tyrannically,
democratically, or otherwise, and how the rulers, those who are strongest, are the ones who make the
laws and they do so to their advantage. Thrasymachus establishes this by saying how, A democracy
sets down democratic laws; a tyranny, tyrannic laws; and the others do the same. (338e) It is clear
from this line of reasoning that Thrasymachus has a solid position that justice is, rightly or wrongly,
the enforcement of the rule of law as dictated by the strong leaders that make the law.
Socrates attempts to disprove Thrasymachus definition of

Effect of Gold Rush on the Social, Political and Cultural...
What effect if any, did the gold rush have on the social, political and cultural development of Australia
as a nation?
The gold rush of the 1850 s had a major and lasting impact on Australia and changed it forever. Before
gold was discovered Australia was a lawless prison colony. Less than fifty years after gold was
discovered, Australia had been transformed into an independent country. The gold rush helped
increase the population, which helped bring social, cultural development and democratic government.
The discovery of gold in 1851, by Edward Hargraves brought about major economic, social and
political changes to the nation of Australia. Gold attracted people from all over the world to come to
Australia, to strike it rich. People ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Many men, who worked on the farms, quit in search of gold. Woman became very important, in many
cases, the woman and children were left to work on the land, with the help of Aboriginal stockman. A

now. People who worked hard would be rewarded. The boost to the economy helped pay for the
modernisation of the whole of Australia. Roads, schools, and churches were built. Train lines were
built to link major cities. The discovery of gold had also stopped convict transportation. The diggers
came from all different backgrounds, but they worked together and considered themselves equal. They
were free from social class. Today, Australia is very much free of class.
The gold rush had a lasting impact on the political development of Australia. The uprising of the
Eureka stockade formed the basis for democracy that we have in Australia today. The Eureka
Rebellion was an important step towards democracy. It was an uprising against authority. The
conditions on the goldfields were difficult. The monthly licensing fees that the diggers had to pay
were quite harsh and unfair. A digger had to pay it even if he didn t find any gold. The way the police
collected the fee was also harsh. These people were ready to fight for change. The miners wanted
better rights. They protested and pressured the government for better conditions, in hope to abolish the
fees. The gold rush gave the diggers a

The simple question is, what is the most useful way of employing it? All parties seem to be agreed on
one point, that the dialects commonly spoken among the natives of this part of India contain neither
literary or scientific information, and are, moreover so poor and rude that, until they are enriched from
some other quarter, it will not be easy to translate any valuable work into them... What, then shall the

other half strongly recommends the Arabic and Sanskrit. The whole question seems to me to be, which
language is the best worth knowing? I have no knowledge of either Sanskrit or Arabic but I have done
what I could to form a correct estimate of their value. I have read translations of the most celebrated
Arabic and Sanskrit works. I have conversed both here and at home with men distinguished by their
proficiency in the Eastern tongues. I am quite ready to take the Oriental learning at the valuation of the
Orientalists themselves. I have never found one among them who could deny that a single shelf of a
good European library was worth the whole native literature of India and Arabia ... It is, I believe, no
exaggeration to say, that all the historical information which has been collected from all the books

Lamb To The Slaughter By Roald Dahl
In Roald Dahl s, Lamb to the Slaughter, Dahl resembles the theme of the story to show the couples
deception. Dahl shows it by having the husbands desire to leave in an unsystematic way. It shows
dishonor and betrayal to the wife since she was 6 months pregnant and the only thing keeping her
happy was having a husband to take care of. Mary was the housewife, and Patrick was the husband.
Mary was always prepared with meals and comfort once Patrick got home from work. They both had
to do very little just to keep a smile on both of their faces, at least a fake smile. Patrick displayed
ignorance once he came home one evening, then mentioning how he wants to leave her. As you could
imagine the amount of shock Mary had in her, lead her to the decision she made by the end of the
story. Mary was very happy in life, she had a husband who she loved, a baby on the way, she thought
to herself what could possibly go wrong? Little does she know, when her husband walks in the door,
he s going to demand a divorce. When Patricks comes home, he gets his normal greeting and his wife
s condolence. Except, he was giving off a negative energy which Mary did notice. He seemed very
stressed, tired, and Mary was trying to help him and do everything possible to make him happy as she
watches him pound his whiskey in one sip. As hard as it was for Patrick to tell Mary the aching news,
this is going to be a bit of a shock to you, i m afraid he just had to spill it out. And he

The History of the X-Rays Essay
During the cold winter of 1895, a German scientist by the name of Wilhelm Conrad Roentgen was
working with a cathode ray tube when he noticed nearby crystals were glowing. When Roentgen
reached for the crystals he was amazed when the shadow cast on the crystal was not of his whole
hand, but just his bones. Roentgen covered the tube with heavy black paper and saw that the crystals
still glowed and the shadow of his hand bones still shown through, he then determined that a new ray
was being emitted that could penetrate through thick materials. (1.) He later found that the rays could
pass through most anything, but would cast a shadow of solid objects; these shadows could then be
captured on film. Among the solid objects Roentgen shot with ... Show more content on

The Coolidge tube could operate to energies up to 100,000 volts. General Electric went on to make x
ray tubes capable of operating at energies up to 1,000,000 volts, which gave the x ray technology
enough stability to become industrialized and mass produced.
With this stability and mass production, x rays machines became very common everywhere. From
large factories, to doctors offices, all the way to the corner store of small towns, where children and
adults alike could insert a coin into a machine and view the bones in their feet. (3.) Because of their
relative adolescences in the world, not much was known about x rays or their effects on the human
body. The first theories about the rays effects on the human body were that they had beneficial
applications. With this being the only theory about their effect, widespread use went on, unmonitored,
and unregulated. This unregulated use led to injuries but because of their slow onset the injuries were
never attributed to x rays. While some scientists tied certain skin burns to over exposure of x rays it
wasn t until popular minds of the world like Thomas Edison, Nikola Tesla and William J. Morton
expressed that they experienced eye pain when dealing with the rays for extended periods of time that
people began to connect the dots and understand the negative

  • 2. Spanish Colonialism on the History of Puerto Rican People... Spanish Colonialism on the History of Puerto Rican People Puerto Rico . The name immediately brings to mind images of a beautiful lush tropical island of enchantment. The name Puerto Rico usually does not conjure the image of Taino Indians or African slaves, yet these populations have great importance in laying the foundation for the notion of identity of Puerto Ricans. In contemporary debates of Puerto Rican identity, it is essential to examine the history of the island to determine the effects of Spanish colonialism on Puerto Rican identity. As he demonstrates in his article Puerto Rico: the Four Storeyed Country , Jose L. Gonzalez discusses the notion of identity as a series of storeys, one built upon another in order further ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... 17). The island s discovery did not lead to a quick occupation, though. Juan Ponce de Leon, in search of gold, made the first effort to settle on the island in 1508. In the next twenty years, the Taino population became decimated while forced to labor in prospecting gold, a phase that ended in this time, succumbing to disease and a breakdown in their social network. An important implication of this initial occupation of the island by Spaniards is the imposition of the Spanish language. Because the Taino population could be counted in small amounts and Spanish had established their presence on the island by instilling their language as the only accepted language, in the name of Spain, a first storey was constructed in the notion of identity of the Puerto Rican. The Tainos had been moved out and taken over, the Spanish had moved in and started to let their culture infiltrate into that of the Taino, and now things were changing. Because the gold rush on the island lost its surge, the Spanish turned its attention to the agricultural success they could have with the island. However, as a result of their occupation, they lacked the labor force to effectively move an agricultural economy. In order to replenish the population and create a strong labor force, the Spanish took part in what others around Puerto Rico had begun to do, import cheap labor, namely African slaves. As the profit grew from cash crops sugar emerging as the most ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Who Is Coach Boone I m a winner. I m going to win. Coach Boone I believe that if coach Yoast stayed as head coach and Herman Boone was his assistant, the team would never become champions. Boone s coaching strategy is direct, simple, and authoritarian. He clearly establishes a sense of urgency, creates a guiding tandem that consists of himself and Yoast, communicates his vision adequately, removes the obstacles of team discord and lack of training, systematically plans for and achieves wins on a game by game basis, avoids declaring victory prematurely, and anchors changes in the team s culture. He asserts top layers and subordinates that he is indisputably in charge. Boone communicates his vision to have a winning team. Early in the movie, Boone states his opposition to the board s decision to replace Yoast with him, citing an experience where someone at a previous job had done the same thing to him. When he orders them to learn about each of their teammates, he is positioning them to solve their interracial tensions but not trying to foist a solution upon them. However, I think this mix of different qualities that both coaches possess, represents a perfect coach for the team (if combined in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When they arrive at the graveyard he says ...if we do not come together on this hollow ground, we too will be destroyed like they were... (Bruckheimer Yakin, 2000). In this movie football is a mean for behavior change. History has taught us that we tend to remember winners, and that is why we remember the Titans. They not only won the State Championship but with an invaluable help from their coaches the team members managed to attain racial integration not only on the field but also in the ... • 6. Aristotle s Use Of Ethos Pathos Logos Throughout my studies at Seton Hall, particularly in Journey of Transformation and Christianity Culture and Dialogue we covered the works of Aristotle. It is interesting to learn how the Greeks were among the first to use persuasion. Aristotle defined rhetoric as the faculty of observing in any given case, the available means of persuasion (17). Aristotle believed that persuasion consist of artistic and inartistic proofs. When giving a persuasive speech we are able to control certain aspects of it such as the delivery, evidence and word usage which are the artistic proofs. Many individuals do not want to live with the guilt of not helping out and so they decide to donate for a good cause, thus eliminating that regret. Finally, we have this idea of logos which is the idea of using logical or rational appeals (17). Lagos uses things such as polls, facts or statistics to appeal to the audience. A recent example of Lagos would be the campaign promises that President Donald Trump made to the American people. One of them was the he promised a 4% GDP growth during his tenure. For investors or the ordinary person, this creates speculation that the future of the economy will be bright. Men have grown tired of simply surviving; they have had to take and conquer others. Absolute monarchies control wealth, land, and even lives of men. The conditions of the people were solely dependent on the conditions of the one who was in power in that particular place and time. History has proven that most men rule unwisely in their kingdoms. To avoid tyrannical rule, some make an attempt to set up a government in which the people ruled themselves. This form of government is called a democracy, or rule of the people. History has also revealed through the Greeks and the French Revolution, that a democracy that gives complete power ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As a result, it was not received as well as the first part, except in England where it was acclaimed highly.2 Tocqueville believes that history progresses with the inevitable growth of equality of conditions, and he sees America as the furthest progression of this growth. The extraordinary level of equality can be both a help and a hindrance to freedom. On the one hand, one cannot have complete freedom. As social conditions become more equal, the number increases who, although they are neither rich enough nor powerful enough to exercise any great influence over their fellow creatures, have nevertheless acquired or retained sufficient education and fortune to satisfy their own wants. 1 Yet at the same time, Tocqueville recognizes than in almost every situation, freedom is endangered by an overly ardent passion for equality. 3 This, independently of equality itself, tends powerfully to divide men, to lead them to mistrust the judgment of others, and to seek the light of truth nowhere but in their own understandings. 1 Tocqueville inaccurately stated the out come of a possible civil war. As long as it only indirectly assailed by the interpretation of its laws, and as long as its substances is not seriously altered, a change of opinion, an internal crisis, or a war, may restore all the vigor which it requires. • 10. The Renaissance Period The argument being put forward in this dissertation is that the Renaissance in Europe, with specific emphasis on Italy, during the 15th Century, was the most influential period in developing the early modern human society. Many believe that this was due to its almost perfect location between Western Europe and the Eastern shore of the Mediterranean. By analysing various factors and sources, as well as different aspects of society, for example political factors and the views of contemporary texts, it will provide enlightening insight into the changes made during the Renaissance period and how these changes are still reverberating. I believe that this question is an important one to study and to answer correctly and accurately because it means that we can trance back the origins of our society today and how it has evolved from, arguably, a more primitive one in terms of breakthroughs and technology. First of all, it is important to understand what the Renaissance period was all about and what it encumbered. The Renaissance period (French: Rebirth ) is a progressive cultural movement that lasted for roughly 3 centuries, from the 14th to the 17th (roughly 1330 1600), and is often referred to as the bridge between the Middle Ages and a Modern Era (*1). The Rebirth of a society, specifically Italy, was recognition of the past but also that it was separate from the present in terms of belief or ideology for example. This meant that a transitional phase occurred as past ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 11. Airborne Express Case Study Airborne Express: Analysis of HBS Case Study Q1) 1. Threat of New Entry For the US Express Mail industry, the overall threat of new entry is very low. The following list and explanation captures the difficulty an entrepreneur might face in trying to penetrate the express mail market: * High capital requirements: In order to establish an express mail operation, the start up capital required is too big for an individual to obtain. For example, Federal Express Superhub in Memphis has 2.4 million square feet of floor space and can hold 147 planes. UPS s new hub will cost approximately $860 million. In addition, a cargo plane sells for $90 million. * Economies of scale: newly established postal service will have tough time ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... 3. Buyer Power In the US Express Mail industry, the buyers fit into two segments: businesses and individuals. Express Mail has become the industry standard in some industries such as banking, consulting and financial services since the items inside the package had a high ratio of value to weight. Businesses needed to be able to track the packages and be assured that it arrives on time. That being said, businesses were often high volume buyers since the shipping managers identified which firm to deal with and concentrate the high volume of shipments to that firm for a particular project or for the time being. Sales representatives from the firms had to negotiate with stingy shipping managers who sometimes demanded the upwards of 50% or more discounts. The existence of many large volume buyers meant that the buyer power is high. Similarly, individuals also held high buyer power since the Big Three and other second tier postal services offered largely undifferentiated services. On the other hand, the heavy discounts granted for businesses means that the express service saves the buyer the money. And the quality of service is important to the buyers since the mail contains valuable information or items. These two factors result in low buyer power. 4. Intensity of Rivalry The express companies delivered tremendous amount of packages. The big three players, Federal Express, UPS, and Airborne Express, collectively delivered more than five million ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 12. The World And Expanse Of Time Throughout the semester, evaluating different eras and event across the world and expanse of time, we have studied how individual players and their actions contribute to our understanding of history itself. Many of our readings were historical accounts centralized on the lives of single players, and these players roles in greater historical events. The outbreak and entirety of WWI, serves as an example of how many individual players, and their actions, contributed to the overall outcome of an all out war. In class, we discussed how there were a number of major players whom helped contribute to the outbreak and subsequent events of WW1. One of the key actors we examined, was the Emperor to Russia at the time, Nicholas II, and the qualities attributed to him as an individual. These are the qualities which may have not only led to Russia s involvement in WWI, but also can be attributed to Russia s loss in Russo Japanese War, further destabilization of Russia s central government under Nicholas II, and ultimately the collapse of the Russian Monarchy, all culminating in the 1917 Russian Revolution. Nicholas II was the first born child of Emperor Alexander III of Russia, and being so, his upbringing was a rather quite and isolated, though he maintained a close relationship with both his father and mother. In 1881, Alexander II, Nicholas grandfather (and Emperor at the time) was assassinated by revolutionaries, quickly making Nicholas heir apparent at the age of thirteen. Though ... Mainly because I work in the industry and know it fits the criteria for security. So I will get down to the name three major information threats to the Card Service Industries. I got my three major information security threats form PC World (Bradley, 2015). For the Payment Card Industry I have chosen Social Engineering, Sophisticated DDoS Attacks, and The Insecurity of Things (Bradley, 2015). due to the access of the ATMs and Credit Card Readers. The first threat is Social Engineering. The Payment Card Industry is a prime target for Social Engineers because they can gain larger profits off of the information. With this information a theft can steal larger amounts of money in a short period. They best defense against Social Engineering is training. On eSecurity Planet s website by Thor Olavsrud they list 9 Best Defenses Against Social Engineering Attacks are the following: 1. Figure ‎ 2.6 Numerical experiment N.B with fire at atrium at 250 Sec [9] Figure ‎ 2.7 Physical model P.M with fire at atrium at 250 Sec. [9] It was concluded that the height of the atrium and the fan locations have obvious effect on the efficient abstraction. Atrium with height more than 30 m with exhaust fans located towards the ends may require attention to control the smoke abstraction efficiently. Yi, Hou, Li and Feng Chow [13] study the relation between the atrium aspect ratio under different heat release rate of fire the flooding time flow of smoke occurs and, 32 simulations were performed using a model, FDS (Fire Dynamics Simulator, Version 3). Table 2.4 shows the size of the atrium and HRR of steady fire. For the all simulations, (3×3×3) meter fire room was used, the fire was at the center of the floor of the fire room, and 27 m height atrium. The vents in the fire floor were both (2×1.5) meter with located at 1 m above the floor with 20 oC ambient temperature. The Odyssey follows this format, and many of these entertainment pieces were inspired by this epic, such as The Chronicles of Narnia. He finds himself and his crew in many situations that lead to death or put them in danger, before eventually making it home and being reunite with his family with the help of the goddess Athena. Each of the kids had learned their own lesson from their journey, and became better, wiser people from this journey. However, in The Odyssey, Odysseus did not show any change. He continued to make the same mistakes of getting his crew into trouble, and did not come home a changed man with different morals than he had left with. Furthermore, the children in Narnia did not want to return home from their journey, it had happened by accident. In The Odyssey, Odysseus had been working on returning home for 20 years and wants to return home as soon as possible. The differences between these two stories were made to differentiate between the different tales, instead of having each story be the exact same setup. These differences are what allow the Hero s Journey to be used as a basis for each story, but still allow the stories to be different and have their own characteristics. Ultimately, the two pieces follow the same structure, but still have their own differences within this structure. • 22. The Importance Of Writing In The Colonial Language Additionally, it can be used to communicate with other indigenous people who speak different languages, but understand the same issues of colonialism. In the specific case of some African states, such as Achebe s Nigeria, the English language became the lingua franca of the national bourgeoisie representative of the various national ethnicities, on the one hand, and the forces of colonialism and transnational capital, on the other. Indeed, postcolonial literature in the colonial language is a double edged sword. Without its use, the writing may never reach a wide audience, as it is impossible to translate every work into each different indigenous language. Furthermore, those who have experienced a diaspora after colonization, such as the Africans who were transported to colonial lands, lost their indigenous language. Their ancestors grew up with the colonial language, and unless they learn their indigenous language, they have no choice to write in the colonial language. Yet, writing in the colonial language furthermore reflects the power that colonists still exert today, that their language must be used to describe the aftereffects of their subjugation of another country. The colonial language becomes culturally more powerful, devaluing the native language as it is brought into its domain, domesticated, and accommodated. Ultimately, the writers must take into consideration the positives and negatives of each approach. They have the choice to write in either language, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Regarding the status and importance of grammar teaching, a variety of opinions have been made. Batstone (1994) states that language without grammar would be chaotic: countless words without the indispensable guidelines for how they can be ordered and modified (p. 4). More vividly, Wang (2010) makes two similes. She compares grammar to the frame of a house, which is a decisive factor to ensure the solidness of it. Additionally, she regards grammar as a walking stick, whose function is to help and support students to learn English. Thus, the nature of grammar instruction manifests its own significance as it helps students ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Evaluation of Miss Wong s Teaching Approach B(1). Teaching philosophy It is teachers beliefs rather than their knowledge that have a greater influence on their instruction (William Burden, 2000). Meighan suggests seven kinks of teachers beliefs about learners: resisters, receptacles, raw materials, clients, partners, individual explorers and democratic explorers. Unlike the first three concepts which focus on teachers, the last four require learners active involvement (as cited in William Burden, 2000). In Miss Wong s teaching approach, a PPP model (i.e., Presentation, Practice and Production) is generally adopted. She firstly presents target grammatical structure of passive voice. Then students do some exercises along with teacher s answer checking. However, it seems the final production step is omitted, resulting in students lacking opportunities to apply the knowledge into other contexts. From her instruction, we can see Miss Wong tends to regard her students as receptacles that are required to absorb the items she transmits. What the instruction concerns is whether students can transform sentences from active to passive or vice verse from a structural level, which is a typical example of a ... The Esthetic Theory and A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man In A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, Stephen Dedalus defines beauty and the artist s comprehension of his/her own art. Stephen uses his esthetic theory with theories borrowed from St. Thomas Aquinas and Plato. The discourse can be broken down into three main sections: 1) A definitions of beauty and art. 2) The apprehension and qualifications of beauty. 3) The artist s view of his/her own work. Given that beauty is only intelligible and not physical, It [beauty] awakens, or ought to awaken, or induces, or ought to induce, an esthetic stasis, an ideal pity or an ideal terror, a stasis called forth. (Pg. 150). Stephen then gives a definition of art, Art is the human disposition of sensible or intelligible matter for an esthetic end. (Pg. 150). That art is formed from the Gross Earth, meaning the artist s experiences. Art does not start as something beautiful, but from experiences that are rough and raw. What transforms these experiences into art is how one can recreate the esthetic emotions felt by the artist. An example of this is when Stephen sees the Bird Girl when wandering on the shore of the Irish Sea. He experiences such enlightenment of only the soul and mind: Her eyes had called him and his soul had leaped at the call. To live, to err, to fall, to triumph, to recreate life out of life. A wild angel had appeared to him, the angel of mortal youth and beauty, an envoy from the fair courts of life, to throw open before him in an instant of ecstasy the gates of all the ways of error and glory. • 42. Socrates Definition Of Justice Essay Justice What is justice? This is a question that men have struggled with answering for centuries. Justice should be defined for the sake of all people, especially by rulers who attempt to make fair laws so that their society functions in an orderly fashion. In Book 1 of The Republic, Plato attempts to define exactly what justice is. To help determine this definition, he speaks through the philosopher protagonist of Socrates. Justice is first brought up in The Republic during Socrates trip to Piraeus. While traveling Socrates ends up gathering with his interlocutors and together, they talk about justice and how one would define it. Socrates debates with the men about the definition of justice and is presented with a definition of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Republic presents two very different views of justice as argued by two skilled thinkers. The beginning of the discussion starts off with Thrasymachus explaining what exactly he believes justice is; justice is nothing other than the advantage of the stronger. (338c) Although Thrasymachus definition is clear, Socrates attempts to spite him by using a wild comparison, by saying If Polydamamas, the pancratiast, is stronger than we are and beef is advantageous for his body, then this food is also advantageous and just for us who are weaker than he is. (338c) This statement from Socrates disgusts Thrasymachus because Thrasymachus was simply referring to stronger in the sense of being a ruler, not strong in the sense of being physically larger. To counter Socrates, Thrasymachus explains how different societies are ruled throughout the world whether it be tyrannically, democratically, or otherwise, and how the rulers, those who are strongest, are the ones who make the laws and they do so to their advantage. Thrasymachus establishes this by saying how, A democracy sets down democratic laws; a tyranny, tyrannic laws; and the others do the same. (338e) It is clear from this line of reasoning that Thrasymachus has a solid position that justice is, rightly or wrongly, the enforcement of the rule of law as dictated by the strong leaders that make the law.
