Ponce City Market is a new development including retail, residential and commercial space that
repurposes the historic Sears Roebuck and Company building in the Old Fourth Ward district of
Atlanta.
The site has been in public use at least back to the 1860 s when it was a popular day trip for Atlantans
who wished to visit Ponce de Leon Springs for their reputed health benefits. The springs on the site
were named by Atlanta physician, Dr. Henry L. Wilson, for Juan Ponce de Leon, of Fountain of Youth
fame, and it is from these springs, rather than the Spanish explorer, that Ponce de Leon Avenue takes
its name. Over time additional attractions were built at the site to capitalize on the popularity of the
springs and in 1903 the construction of a true amusement park was begun. Ponce de Leon Park
remained a local attraction through the early 1920 s.
In 1924, the park now closed, Sears Roebuck and Company chose the site for their Southeastern
headquarters and began work on the current structure, completing the first phase in 1926. The building
