A NOTE FROM PASTOR JOEY
In the play, Twelfth Night, by Shakespeare the line is uttered “If music be
the food of love play on.” Indeed music would seem to be that which
nourishes humanity. Old songs can bring back memories. Love songs can
bring a tear to an eye. Music has a way of getting inside us and
sometimes comes out whether we want it to or not. Sociologists tell us
that all societies and cultures have a central place for music especially in
the gathered community. For those within the faith tradition this meant
gathering and singing the Psalms. As modern worshipers this might seem
a bit arcane, yet this was the common style of liturgical worship until the
sixteenth century. At this time in the throws of the Protestant
Reformation new styles of music began to be written and performed for
Church settings.
As you might imagine not everyone was delighted with the “New Music.”
This is no less true today. Every once in a while a person will ask why we
sing modern music in Church. The answer is twofold. First, if all the
music we sing is from a long past century, we are liable to forget the era in
which we reside, and more importantly, if we are to witness to the current
generation we must do so in a manner relevant to modern ears. “Be
Thou My Vision” is a moving hymn to me. It was part of the liturgy used
when I was ordained so it touches me deeply every time I sing it. “Star
Child,” from The Faith We Sing hymnal is a Christmas hymn which I
cannot sing without tearing up. Another from The Faith We Sing hymnal
which touches me is “Cry of My Heart.” Composer Terry Butler writes:
“Teach me your holy ways, O Lord, so I can walk in your truth. Teach
me your holy ways, O Lord, and make me wholly devoted to you. (The
refrain) It is the cry of my heart to follow you. It is the cry of my heart to
be close to you. It is the cry of my heart to follow all of the days of my
life.”
There exists within notes and lyric a transformative and mysterious
element. How else can I explain that at certain times, in certain seasons,
when I sing certain songs I hear my parents’ voices and sense their very
presence. The why of music having such power is not very complicated
for me. It seems to me that the gift of song is one bestowed on creatures
by our creator. An internal blessing which when fed by grace comes out
naturally.

HIGHLIGHTS OF WORSHIP
July 3 - Today, we welcomed back Pastor Joey for his 27th year! Shaun Vieten presented Pastor Joey with
a card and gift on behalf of the Staff Parish Relations Committee. Norman and Phillip led the monthly
announcements inspired by “Hamilton-The Musical.” Pastor Joey’s sermon was titled, “For The Good Of
All,” based on Galatians 6:1-16. Communion was served this morning.
July 10 - On this Eighth Sunday after Pentecost, Pastor Joey took a moment to recognize Patty Kelsey for
5 years of service as Director of Program Ministries. There was a moment with the children about being a
good neighbor. Pastor Joey’s message, “Since Then,” was based on Colossians 1:1-14 and ended with
Norman Kelsey sharing “Love’s In Need Of Love Today,” by Stevie Wonder.
July 17 - This morning, a Mission Moment was shared about Discovery Arts Bedside Adventure Kits. The
scripture today was Luke 10:38-42 and Pastor Joey’s message was titled, “The Better Part.”
July 24 - On the Tenth Sunday of Pentecost, Norman Kelsey stood in for Pastor Joey and shared a
message inspired by Psalm 138 titled, “Silly Love Songs.”

LIBRARY NEWS: “SUM IT UP” by Pat Head Summitt and Sally Jenkins
Pat Summitt, long-time coach of the Lady Volunteers women’s basketball team at the University of
Tennessee, recently passed away due to early onset Alzheimer’s Disease. Pastor Joey mentioned the loss of
this remarkable woman twice during services in the month of July.
Pat Summitt was one of the best coaches ever, and one of the most enduring. She led the University of
Tennessee women’s basketball team to a record 1,098 victories during her reign from 1974 to 2012. She
helped lift her sport out of an era in which high school girls didn’t even play on a full court and the
number of female college athletes grew from 16,000 to over 200,000. Her teams won 8 national titles and
100% of her players who completed their eligibility graduated from college.
Her memoir, “Sum It Up”, written with Sally Jenkins, is in our church library. It was
purchased as a part of the UMW Reading Program. If you would like learn more
about Pat Summitt, you will find this easy-reading book in the UMW section of the
library to the left of the fireplace. It has a purple circle on the spine indicating that it
was in the Leadership Development section of the Reading Program. You may not
learn how to be a successful college basketball coach, but you will read the
fascinating story of this woman’s life.

7. SAVE THE DATE!
Please put this on your calendar right away.
What: Concert featuring Jaway and Friends
When: Saturday, October 8, 2 p.m.
Where: Our Social Hall
Our own Francis Nyaforh, who performs as Jaway, and some of his musician friends will be presenting
a musical program to raise funds KIDS FOR JOY, his non-profit foundation under Section 501(c)(3),
EIN #47-1631621. Now all money raised will go directly to Kids for Joy and the only church
involvement will be providing the site for the concert.
The Mission of Kids for Joy is: To improve the lives of poor and underprivileged children, especially in
Liberia, West Africa, by providing them with resources that will eventually bring about relief, stability,
and education.
You may remember the wonderful music when Francis, Shaun Vieten and Gary Solt performed for us
in August 2014. Before we could send any money to the Carolyn E. Miller School, all schools were shut
down due to the Ebola outbreak in Liberia. While fighting this deadly crisis, the raining season started.
After Ebola was eradicated and the raining season was over, Francis learned from the head of the
school that half of the roofing on the school building was destroyed by the rain. Therefore, the money
raised was used to help fix part of the roofing. One of our goals is to raise funds to pay off the balance
for the roofing.

8. CALIFORNIA PACIFIC CONFERENCE HIGHLIGHTS
By Ken Ellis
As regular as leap year and presidential elections - every fourth year the United Methodist Church conducts
what seems like a YEAR of CONFERENCE. General, Annual, and Jurisdictional Conferences are conducted.
Early May found 700plus delegates gathered in Portland ready to update the Books of Discipline and
Resolutions as well as determine a UMC budget for the next four years. (A slight increase to $604 million from
$603 million.)
After much heated debate the General Conference asked the Council of Bishops (COB) for help. The next day
suggestions came forth and motions came from the floor authorizing the COB to form a commission tasked to
study the Book of Discipline paragraphs dealing with human sexuality and bring forth in several years “a way
forward” for the UMC. A special General Conference will probably be held in three years to work with the
commission output. It was also decided to discontinue debate on resolutions dealing with Human sexuality at
the 2016 GC. As a four time delegate this was the FIRST time I came home with HOPE. Hope, not that we
will all agree, but HOPE that we can work together, in spite of divergent views. All focused on transforming the
world. For detailed info start your search at: http://www.umc.org/topics/general-conference-2016
Mid June the University of Redlands once again accepted the Cal-Pac annual meeting (AC). Budgets,
resolutions, proposals, along with daily opening worship, Communion & Memorial Service, and Ordination to
end the business of the week. http://www.calpacumc.org/secretary/ is your start point for details on the work
of the AC. Three ACs in the West several others across the nation passed resolutions similar to :
Resolution 16-11 (A Call for Non-Conformity with the Book of Discipline). A portion follows.
Cal-Pac AC urges Bishop and Cabinet to state they will not deny appointments based on sexual orientation or
gender identity; urges Board of Ordained Ministry to not consider sexual orientation and gender identity in
making ordination decisions; urges trial boards not to convict for “offenses” pertaining to “self-avowed,
practicing homosexual,” as well as clergy conducting same sex weddings and that these matters would be
addressed through “Just Resolution.”
The Western Jurisdictional Conference (WJC) was truly a hot one, our mid July meeting in Scottsdale with
daily highs of 110-116 F! That same week all five of the US Jurisdictions meet to elect a total of 15 bishops.
Following the retirement of Bishop Brown WJC was in the position to elect (in 2012 WJC held no election as
we had lost one due to decreasing membership.)
At the 17 vote we elected Rev. Dr. Karen Oliveto out of the California-Nevada Conference where she served as
senior pastor of Glide Memorial UMC in San Francisco. CA. Glide is the Western Jurisdiction’s largest
membership congregation, and one of the top 100 largest membership congregations in the denomination.
Karen and her wife will be living in the Denver area.
Episcopal assignments are determined by the Western Jurisdiction Episcopacy Committee. Each assignment
begins on September 1 of the year. After the Episcopacy Committee met until 2:35AM through much prayer
and consideration, these are the assignments for the 2016-2020 quadrennium:
Great Northwest Episcopal Area: Bishop Elaine Stanovsky
Alaska, Oregon-Idaho and Pacific Northwest Conferences
California-Nevada: Bishop Minerva Carcaño
California-Pacific: Bishop Grant Hagiya
Desert Southwest: Bishop Robert Hoshibata
Mountain Sky Episcopal Area: Bishop Karen Oliveto

10. Reflections
! Joey K. "Donald
Reflections are part of the weekly bulletin inserts for worship. This writing is originally from July 18, 2004
and Dr. McDonald’s sermon was titled “A Choice Between Busywork and Blessing” based on Luke 10:38-42.
Whether it is part of the culture or training of most, we seem to be a people of action rather
than reflection; geared more to doing as opposed to simply being. The thought of
introspection over action leaves most of us a bit uncomfortable, emotionally if not physically.
Yet, if we look at the model and the message of Jesus, it is one of balance between action and
spiritual self care.
Time and again the gospel writers record Jesus being involved in ministry, be it teaching,
healing or confronting people. Then they would record how he drew apart from the crowds,
and at times even the disciples, to pray and replenish himself spiritually.
In Luke 10:38-42 we find the story of Martha and Mary. Jesus and his followers (perhaps as
many as seventy) stop at the home of Martha while her sister Mary is visiting. Martha, in an
effort to be hospitable, tends to the needs of her guests. Mary, rather than help, enjoys the
company and the teaching of Jesus. Martha takes note, complains to Jesus that Mary in not
doing her part, and receives a gentle rebuke, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and distracted
by many things; there is need of only one thing. Mary has chosen the better part, which will
not be taken away from her.” I don’t know about you, but it is hard to imagine not throwing
Jesus out of her home, or at the very least asking him to explain why it’s okay for Mary to be a
slacker.
Each day we seek to get things done to see results and be productive. To that end we make
plans, create lists and as we move through the tasks check them off. What Jesus seems to say to
Martha is that there are times when the most important task in front of us is being truly
present.
Under the guise of being productive, we now have a new standard in the workplace and home
which we call multi-tasking. This simply means we create more work than we can ever get
done in a day. Which leads us to eat lunch on the run, have call waiting, even on our cell
phones, e-mail until our heads spin. Then at the end of the day either feel guilty about what
we haven’t accomplished, or angry about the help we didn’t receive. Jesus says to the Martha
in each of us exactly what we don’t want to hear. That time spent in soul searching is ever
more important than a sink full of dishes.
