I started my first Good News Article of Faith with an “Aloha” to the
NoHo FUMC community. In Hawaiian, “Aloha” means “hello.” “Aloha”
can also mean “I love you.” And “Aloha” can also mean “good bye.” In
the short time of my interim appointment to the congregation and
community at NoHo, I cannot express to you the “aloha spirit” that I
have felt in this sacred place.
I wanted to take the opportunity to thank each of you for the kindness
and welcome that you have extended to me and my family. I also wanted
to share my wonder and awe that I have for this congregation, as in your
time of grieving over your beloved Pastor Joey, you are a resilient people
who embraced change and transition within the life of the church. We
have worked hard as a church to reset the committees, missions, and
ministries of the church from creating a working budget, convening our
Church Council in a new format, shared in Lenten studies and small
group trainings, received new members, baptized babies, to creating
protocols and prioritizing the needs of the church.
As we spend June together, we still have much work to do. You will be
preparing to receive and welcome a new pastor, the Rev. Steve Peralta.
This congregation will open your arms of love and aloha even wider as
you share in your ministries with Pastor Steve. Continue to be kind to one
another, love each other, and love your God.
Aloha a hui hou kakou - Farewell until we meet again!
Aloha kekahi I kekahi - Love one another
Aloha Ke Akua pu a hui hou - May the God of Love bless you...
and I’ll see you later!

HIGHLIGHTS OF WORSHIP
May 6 - We started off the month of May with Announcements, shared by Norman Kelsey and Sherri
Perry. Pastor Allison used THE FORCE to celebrate “May the 4th,” during worship! The children got to
see what was inside R2D2 during their special moment. Pastor Allison then shared her sermon that was
based on 1 John 5:1-6 with Yoda on her back and a couple of droids hanging out at her feet. We also
shared in the Sacrament of Communion.
May 13 - We were thrilled to get our Live Streaming of worship up and running this morning, Mother’s
Day! Today, all the ladies who came to church, received a pretty carnation with a scripture that read, “She
is more precious than rubies, nothing you desire can compare with her.” ~ Proverbs 3:15. Patty Kelsey
shared a Moment with the Children using a maze puzzle to talk about how we find our way by placing our
trust in Jesus. Pastor Allison’s sermon, “Mother!” was based on John 17:6-19.
May 20 - It was not only Pentecost Sunday, but also, Heritage Sunday. Everyone in attendance received a
Tongues of Fire streamer to wave in celebration of the birth of the Christian Church. We were blessed to
celebrate the confirmation of Daniella Lake, Bryan Ancheta, and Andrew Esposo. Our confirmands were
our liturgists this morning and read scripture, call to worship, the invitation to the offering, and prayer
before the official service of Confirmation. Each confirmand received a certificate, confirmation stole, and
wooden crosses from the Holy Land. Pastor Allison shared a sermon, “Hearts on Fire,” based on Acts
2:1-21 and 1 Corinthians 12:3-13.
May 27 - Today was Trinity Sunday and Peace with Justice Sunday! We celebrated the Sacrament of
Holy Baptism for Lyla Corinne Sanders during Time with Children. Pastor Allison began a Sermon
Series: Life in Transition. Her sermon, Keep Calm and Be Prepared, was based on two scriptures - John
3:1-17 & James 1:22-25.
2 Corinthians 5:6-10 (11-13), 14-17

Summer Youth Leader Intern
Many of you know one of our newest members, child of the
church, Daniella Lake, daughter of Dr. Lancelot and Morenike
Lake. As she prepares to enter into her junior year of high
school, she will be interning at NoHo FUMC as a Vacation
Bible School leader, attending Annual Conference, planning and
preparations for the year as missions chair, and also offering
general office support on phones, copying, and other office
duties.
Daniella’s 8 week internship will begin on June 11. She will be
supervised and mentored by Patty and will receive spiritual
direction by the pastors. As a congregation, let us hold this
young leader in our prayers and be ready for when she calls you
into action for Christ!
Reception of New Members
In the month of May, we received three new members,
Bryan Ancheta, Andrew Esposo, and Daniella Lake and we
also baptized Lyla Sanders, granddaughter of members
Edwin and Elaine Abrena. On June 24, we will be receiving
members during the service. If you are interested in officially
joining NoHo FUMC, please contact Pastor Allison:

The new LED Bulbs no longer need ballast which is what makes the humming noise we all are so
familiar with under fluorescent lights. This will save us money while keeping the Church nice and bright.
Throughout the year your Trustees will be hosting Work Parties where we all pitch in and make our
house of worship look as awesome as the people in it. As you saw we will be having one Saturday June
23rd from 9am to 1pm. While all are welcome because we have tasks for all abilities but if you have a
special skill like painting, wood working, masonry, or any general construction skills we would love to
hear about it because we could use your expertise.
The Trustees can’t be everywhere all the time so we need your help if you see something like a burnt out
light, broken window, corner that hasn’t been cleaned, or anything with regards to our property, please
let us know by emailing nohofumctrustees@gmail.com With your help we can tackle tasks even faster.
NoHo FUMC is going green. Under the leadership of Ken
Elllis, the church is switching its lights from Incandescent and
CFL Bulbs to LED Bulbs in the Sanctuary and Office and
eventually the rest of the campus. With new LED Bulbs in the
Sanctuary where we used to 1,920 watts of energy, we now
only use 406 watts total.
Note from Northshore Disaster Recovery
Dear Pastor Allison and the Mission Task Force,
We cannot begin to adequately express how
grateful we are for your contined financial,
physical, and spiritual support.
As you may know, the Epworth Project depends
almost solely on the generosity of eople like you
and every donation isvery much appreciated.
Meeting the needs of those struggling has been
particularly challenging this past year. Resources
that might have been used in Southeast Louisiana
were reallocated to those in need in the aftermath
of the Hurricanes Harvey, Irma, and Maria. Your
donation of $1,140.25 has made it possible for the
Epworth Project to continue providing much
needed help to those in our area.
Now, more than ever, your contributions are a true
blessing. Your ongoing support allows the Epworth
project to continue its ministries to the undeserved
and forgotten. For many families we serve, without
your help, there would be no hope.
Thank you all for your generous and loving Spirit
of compassion.
Yours in Christ

At any given time, the Operation Gratitude facility
at 21100 Lassen Street, Chatsworth 91311, known
as “The FOB” (Forward Operating Base), is filled
with millions of items donated by Americans from
across the country. Once a month or more,
volunteers in the Southern California area are
invited to help assemble these items to create the
Operation Gratitude Care Packages. Previously
Assembly Days were always Saturdays or an
occasional Sunday. This year evening sessions
have been added so that more people can have an
opportunity to assist.
Assembly Days are scheduled as follows:
Saturday, June 23, 9 am – 12 noon
Friday, July 13, 4 pm – 8 pm
Wednesday, July 13, 4 pm – 8 pm
Saturday, August 18, 9 am – 12 noon
Saturday, September 15 – 9 am – 12 noon
Wednesday, September 26, 4 pm – 8 pm
Wednesday, October 10, 4 pm – 8 pm

There are tasks appropriate for all levels of ability.
Prep Work consists of sorting donated items,
folding shirts, writing/screening letters, quality
controlling Battalion Buddies and/or preparing
products and the Assembly Line. Assembly work
includes production of the Care Packages,
labeling, taping, running packages, re-stocking the
lines, breaking down cartons and other tasks.
Production work includes hand-making items
onsite. Time allowing, you will be provided
instructions and materials for making Paracord
Survival Bracelets and/or Battalion Buddies.

Anita McChesney has been a frequent volunteer
this year on Assembly Days and regular weekdays.
When can you help? You can invite friends to go
with you or go by yourself and make some new
friends.
Ken Ellis joined the North District UMVIM
(United Methodist Volunteers in Mission) Team,
as it returned to Slidell, LA., April 15-21. This was
their fifth deployment to the Epworth.
Created as the ecumenical, faith-based volunteer driven arm of the North Disaster Recovery; addressing
needs around the area not directly related to Hurricane recovery. These needs include home repairs for
the  low income and elderly, weatherize homes, handicap accessibility issues, emergency repairs and
assistance with routine home maintenance and upkeep issues for the elderly. Hurricanes, floods, and
tornados continue to visit the area.
Since September of 2005, NDRI
and the Epworth Project have
hosted more than 56,000
volunteers, provided services to
over 3,000 clients and logged over
2.2 million man hours of
community service.
Our team addressed the needs of
one family in a manufactured
home that had been damaged
during a storm the previous year.
A LARGE tree caused initial roof
and structural damage, rains
created subsequent internal
damage. The main breadwinner is
on disability awaiting back
surgery. His wife working many
extended hours. Three children away from home (two in college) and three at home, 7-15, make life very
interesting. Our project was to finish the kids bed rooms (drywall, paint, and snap flooring) and get the
bathroom finished (reset bathtub and provide new drain under the house, drywall, shower surround, and
tile floor). Unfortunately we ran out of time and were unable to tile the bathroom.
We learned that 900 volunteers have canceled their Epworth missions since hurricane Harvey hit
Houston. How about joining us next year? We have tentatively requested March 31 – April 6, 2019.
Please pray for our Slidell family, the many in need around the world, and Epworth Project.
Epworth’s Mission – Sharing God’s love – working to restore houses, empower people
and change lines.

AND Come learn moreabout the humanitarian crisis in the Philippines and how folks from here in Cal-Pac are responding together with United Methodists from the Philippines! Sunday, June 10 | 12:00 PM Lounge For More Info: Andrew Esposo andrewesposo@gmail.com Like us on facebook: Cal-Pac Taskforce Philippines The new LED Bulbs no longer need ballast which is what makes the humming noise we all are so familiar with under fluorescent lights. This will save us money while keeping the Church nice and bright. Throughout the year your Trustees will be hosting Work Parties where we all pitch in and make our house of worship look as awesome as the people in it. As you saw we will be having one Saturday June 23rd from 9am to 1pm. While all are welcome because we have tasks for all abilities but if you have a special skill like painting, wood working, masonry, or any general construction skills we would love to hear about it because we could use your expertise. The Trustees can’t be everywhere all the time so we need your help if you see something like a burnt out light, broken window, corner that hasn’t been cleaned, or anything with regards to our property, please let us know by emailing nohofumctrustees@gmail.com With your help we can tackle tasks even faster. NoHo FUMC is going green. With new LED Bulbs in the Sanctuary where we used to 1,920 watts of energy, we now only use 406 watts total.

Note from NorthshoreDisaster Recovery Dear Pastor Allison and the Mission Task Force, We cannot begin to adequately express how grateful we are for your contined financial, physical, and spiritual support. As you may know, the Epworth Project depends almost solely on the generosity of eople like you and every donation isvery much appreciated. Meeting the needs of those struggling has been particularly challenging this past year. Resources that might have been used in Southeast Louisiana were reallocated to those in need in the aftermath of the Hurricanes Harvey, Irma, and Maria. Your donation of $1,140.25 has made it possible for the Epworth Project to continue providing much needed help to those in our area. Now, more than ever, your contributions are a true blessing. Your ongoing support allows the Epworth project to continue its ministries to the undeserved and forgotten. For many families we serve, without your help, there would be no hope. Thank you all for your generous and loving Spirit of compassion. Yours in Christ Jim Fatic Executive Director, Epworth Project/NDRI By Lynn Yoshizumi At any given time, the Operation Gratitude facility at 21100 Lassen Street, Chatsworth 91311, known as “The FOB” (Forward Operating Base), is filled with millions of items donated by Americans from across the country. Once a month or more, volunteers in the Southern California area are invited to help assemble these items to create the Operation Gratitude Care Packages. Previously Assembly Days were always Saturdays or an occasional Sunday. This year evening sessions have been added so that more people can have an opportunity to assist. Assembly Days are scheduled as follows: Saturday, June 23, 9 am – 12 noon Friday, July 13, 4 pm – 8 pm Wednesday, July 13, 4 pm – 8 pm Saturday, August 18, 9 am – 12 noon Saturday, September 15 – 9 am – 12 noon Wednesday, September 26, 4 pm – 8 pm Wednesday, October 10, 4 pm – 8 pm   There are tasks appropriate for all levels of ability. Prep Work consists of sorting donated items, folding shirts, writing/screening letters, quality controlling Battalion Buddies and/or preparing products and the Assembly Line. Assembly work includes production of the Care Packages, labeling, taping, running packages, re-stocking the lines, breaking down cartons and other tasks. Production work includes hand-making items onsite. Time allowing, you will be provided instructions and materials for making Paracord Survival Bracelets and/or Battalion Buddies.   Anita McChesney has been a frequent volunteer this year on Assembly Days and regular weekdays. When can you help? You can invite friends to go with you or go by yourself and make some new friends.

Ken Ellis joinedthe North District UMVIM (United Methodist Volunteers in Mission) Team, as it returned to Slidell, LA., April 15-21. This was their fifth deployment to the Epworth. Created as the ecumenical, faith-based volunteer driven arm of the North Disaster Recovery; addressing needs around the area not directly related to Hurricane recovery. These needs include home repairs for the  low income and elderly, weatherize homes, handicap accessibility issues, emergency repairs and assistance with routine home maintenance and upkeep issues for the elderly. Hurricanes, floods, and tornados continue to visit the area. Since September of 2005, NDRI and the Epworth Project have hosted more than 56,000 volunteers, provided services to over 3,000 clients and logged over 2.2 million man hours of community service. Our team addressed the needs of one family in a manufactured home that had been damaged during a storm the previous year. A LARGE tree caused initial roof and structural damage, rains created subsequent internal damage. The main breadwinner is on disability awaiting back surgery. His wife working many extended hours. Three children away from home (two in college) and three at home, 7-15, make life very interesting. Our project was to finish the kids bed rooms (drywall, paint, and snap flooring) and get the bathroom finished (reset bathtub and provide new drain under the house, drywall, shower surround, and tile floor). Unfortunately we ran out of time and were unable to tile the bathroom. We learned that 900 volunteers have canceled their Epworth missions since hurricane Harvey hit Houston. How about joining us next year? We have tentatively requested March 31 – April 6, 2019. Please pray for our Slidell family, the many in need around the world, and Epworth Project. Epworth’s Mission – Sharing God’s love – working to restore houses, empower people and change lines. By Ken Ellis NOTICE OF FILMING Our worship service in the Main Sanctuary will be streamed live to Facebook every Sunday. Please note that by entering our premises for 10:30 service, you understand that you may be filmed.
