HIGHLIGHTS OF WORSHIP
October 2nd - Today was World Communion Sunday. Norman Kelsey and Phillip Mottaz returned as
Doctor Mottazstein & The Count Normula to share the spooky October Announcements! Pastor Joey shared a
message based on Philippians 1:1-13 titled “The Rhetorical If.” This is a statement of how we are supposed to
love God and others. It begins with a series of rhetorical statements about if there is any goodness in loving
Christ. We need to live a loving life in Christ and be loving towards everyone. Communion was served today at
8:15 AM & 10:30 AM worship services.
October 9th - Bill Varney stepped in for Patty Kelsey, who was recuperating from surgery. Pastor Joey’s
sermon, “Sour Grapes,” was based, initially on, Matthew 21:33-46. This was the Parable of the Landowner
creating a vineyard but Pastor Joey switched scripture to Romans 5:1-5 because the focus was about hope.
Hope never disappoints us. What we have to remember is that no matter how fearful we are, hope is always
stronger than fear.
October 15th - Worship this morning was solemn as we carried on while our beloved Pastor Joey was in ICU
at Sherman Oaks Hospital. Ken Ellis shared the message based on the lectionary scriptures.
October 18th - The North District - San Fernando Valley Mission Area #3 Charge Conference took place at
Canoga Park UMC. Our District Superintendent, Rev. James R. Powell, was on hand to lead us through the
agenda. Our SPRC met with Pastor Jim to discussed what was to come following Pastor Joey’s sudden passing.
Pastor Jim called up everyone from NoHo FUMC and had all those attending circle around and lay hands as
they all prayed for us. Churches in our Mission area: Canoga Park, Hindi-Urdu, Sherman Oaks and
Woodland Hills.
October 22nd - Today was Laity Sunday where we had a wonderful variety of congregants leading all the
aspects of worship. Thanks to Patty Kelsey for facilitating. We are also grateful to the following people for
taking part in Laity Sunday: Doug Eboch, Sherri Perry, Tonya Peat, Daniella Lake, Rebecca & Joe Forgione,
Bill Varney, Charles Minetree, Patty & Norman Kelsey, Special music by Julie Shuford, Libeck Kadu, Sherri
Perry, David Eshleman, Shaun Vieten & Roger Eshleman. The sermon was shared by Norman Kelsey, “Hope
Through Hospitality” based on Luke 10:1-11. Lunch was catered by Tea Elle C Cafe & Spumante. Hosted by
Sue McDonald in the Social Hall. Thank you to the set up and clean up crew: The Lake Family, Sherri Perry,
Chuck Schafer, Todd Murata, Rebecca & Joe Forgione, The Anchetas, Joe from Spumante & Julie Shuford.
Pastor Joey truly equipped this congregation and was certainly smiling down at us for a job well done.
October 29th - Norman Kelsey sat in the pulpit and made sure to keep Pastor Joey’s original choice for
scripture, 1 Thessaonians 2:1-6 and original sermon title, “Goodness Is Not A Game,” and truly stepped up to
the challenge. The message related how we are all called to participate, that goodness comes from God with
Paul’s focus on authenticity and sincerity (with a few quotes from Linus in “It’s The Great Pumpkin, Charlie
Brown,” for good measure), and bringing joy organically through smiles.

The United Methodist Women have been
stitching, painting, gluing, baking, and canning
all year to create another wonderful morning of
shopping and fellowship.
All proceeds from this event go toward assisting
several mission projects: The David &
Margaret Youth and Family Services in
LaVerne; The Methodist Hospital in Arcadia;
N e w E n t r a C a s a ; a n d To b e r m a n
Neighborhood Center in San Pedro.
Come and delight in our baked goods,
homemade jams and jellies, handmade holiday
decorations and gifts and, of course, the
"Second Time Around Table."
The UMW are asking for donations for the
second-time-around table. All gently used items
please. Assistance is also needed with set-up for
the boutique. On Monday, November 6th at
9:30 am, the ladies will be cooking in the social
hall kitchen and setting up tables on Friday,
November 10th at 9:30 am in the Social Hall.

12th, 19th, & 26th - Dr. Lincoln Galloway
Dr. Lincoln E. Galloway began a career in teaching at St. Peter’s
Primary School where he taught for three years from 1973-1976. He
then moved on to other teaching appointments which included St.
John’s, Salem, and Brades’ Primary Schools, as well as Salem Campus
(MSS). He studied at Erdiston Teachers’ Training College in Barbados
and later graduated with a Bachelor of Education degree from the
University of West Indies. Later, following a vocational call to pastoral
ministry, he studied for the Masters of Divinity (M.Div.) at Candler
School of Theology in Atlanta and continued his graduate work at
Emory University where he earned a Ph.D. in New Testament Studies.
He served the Methodist Church as a local preacher during his years in Montserrat and today he is an
ordained elder in the United Methodist Church. Dr. Galloway is currently the K. Morgan Edwards
Associate Professor of Homiletics at Claremont School of Theology in California. He is a member of the
Academy of American Religion (AAR), the Society for the Study of Biblical Literature (SBL), and is
currently Second Vice-President of the Academy of Homiletics.

Elena Ashton was in a car accident at the end of September and injured her neck. Her car has been in the
shop and she is recuperating.
Patty Kelsey will begin radiation treatment on November 8th.
Tracy Ritter underwent another surgery to remove cancerous tissue from her adenoid and throat area.
Kim Deason’s husband, Mikio, will be undergoing chemotherapy again.
Keven McConnell’s facial paralysis has been improving but he still does not have full movement of his face.
Pray for Puerto Rico and all places that were hit by natural disasters as they rebuild.

The Reverend Doctor Joey K. McDonald
Joey Kern McDonald was born in Ypsilanti, Michigan in 1949 to Charles (Red) and Mary McDonald.
The family moved to Winstead, Connecticut in 1952, then to Garden Grove, California in 1956. He
was the youngest of five children – Michaeline, Thomas, Peggy, and Kimberley. Sadly, both his mother
and father, as well as his sister Mickie and brother Tom, preceded him in death.
Joey was married nearly 42 years to Sue, and had two sons, Aaron and Ian.
He earned an associate’s degree from Santa Ana Community College, a bachelor’s degree from
University of California at Fullerton, master and doctorate degrees from Claremont School of
Theology. He was ordained Elder in the California Pacific Conference of the United Methodist
Church.
As a servant of God, he served the United Methodist Church beginning in 1975. He began his service
as a youth counsellor, then after ordination as a senior minister, he served the churches in Garden
Grove, Mission Viejo, Twenty-Nine Palms, Rubidoux, and North Hollywood. His ministry was about
preaching grace and hope. He also passionately believed in the strength and ministry of the laity.
Joey was a good man who lived life at face value. He was loyal to God, the church, his family, and
friends. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

10. Reflections
Dr. Joey K. McDonald
“We give thee but thine own, whate’er the gift may be: All that we have is thine alone, a
trust O Lord from thee.” I grew up singing this hymn as a response to the offering. In
Philippians 4:10-19, Paul gives thanks for the financial support the people have sent him.
They had given for a time, stopped, then resumed gifts toward his ministry. He affirms the
gift, without lamenting the earlier absence of giving. More importantly, he counts the gift
as holy, and prays God’s blessing upon current and future offerings.
When money comes up in Church someone is liable to be offended. This is because of
how personal money matters can be. Someone will say all the church ever does is ask for
money, which means don’t ask or tell me how to give. So we soft sell stewardship. We
write letters, send estimate of giving cards and ask people to prayerfully consider their
gifts. It would be more effective to ask folks to put as much effort into giving as into
buying a car or a TV. That thinking is fractured because it is based on our need to
purchase. The desire to receive something of value for money. Stewardship, however, is
based on our need to give.
Of course gifts to a local church are appreciated and needed. From the blessings of the
gathered community in worship, to feeding the hungry locally and the support given
distant missionaries, giving money matters. How much is a personal decision. If we speak
passionately about a social issue, and invoke what the Bible says about it, and yet become
forgetful in terms of stewardship, we have erred. Friends the Bible is clear, all of what we
have belongs to God, we hold it in trust. In terms of giving, ten percent of what we have is
the place we begin as stewards. How we figure that percent is up to us.
If we withhold our money from a church because we disagree with its theology, structure
or program, we do so in ignorance of the aim of stewardship; which is sharing our
abundance in grateful response to God’s goodness. Our faith is deepened by our need to
give not the need of the church to receive. If we are not being fed in a faith community,
we are not vested in terms of time, talent and treasure in that place. A part of the
imperative of faith is to put our money where our faith is. In more base terms a colleague
once spoke of a member saying of stewardship; “preaching what ain’t paid for don’t
sound good.”
