Iwataro Koike was a highly influential Japanese designer and design educator. He graduated from the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music in 1935 and later taught at the same university from 1942 to 1969. He played a key role in establishing an important early Japanese design consultancy, GK Design, through one of his student groups known as the "Group Koike". Koike was also involved in the Japan Industrial Designers Association and spoke at international design conferences, helping to further establish industrial design in Japan. He received several prestigious awards from the Japanese government in recognition of his contributions to design education and promotion.
