“Sand machine” (1983)
Akitaka, father of Rintaro,
was fascinated by the
wonder of sand and
developed a variety of
moving objets with sand.
The photos show one of
his art work, a rotating
sand machine of about 1m
in diameter and 5cm thick
sandwiched by two glass
plates. The rotation
produces ｉｎｔｅｒｅｓｔｉｎｇ
motion of sands through
slits and the pattern of sand
piles.

intention and further went
into a world of art-nature.
The photo shows one of
his work that makes
motion as well as sound

In 2001 A project team named FB Art & Space was
organized at Tokyo U A&T by Prof Masayuki Horio to
explore the wonderful potential of powder and fluidization

6. Lamp: Prototype
The photos show a prototype lamp having a
coaxial thin fluidized bed of glass beads and
a colored fluorescent lamp at the center.

7. In 2002 FB Arts & Space made a space
tree having three thin ‘leaves’ of oval 2D
fluidized bed illuminated by LED lamps
from behind and brought it to World
Congress of Particle Technology held at
Sydney.
