1. Colorectal cancer develops from adenomatous polyps through a series of genetic mutations over many years. Only about 1 in 20 polyps progress to cancer. 2. The two major hereditary colorectal cancer syndromes are familial adenomatous polyposis and hereditary nonpolyposis colorectal cancer. People with a family history of colorectal cancer or polyps are also at higher risk. 3. Screening tests like colonoscopy can detect and remove polyps, preventing colorectal cancer. Regular screening is recommended for those over 50 or with a family history of colorectal cancer.
