1) to give students an idea of a typical example of a climate data set (spatio-temporal data) and someassociated scientific questions (e.g. how rainfall extremes vary in space and time and how that mightbe affected by other things like greenhouse gases or temperatures).
2) to get students familiar with data analysis using R including data manipulation, data visualization, and data summary.
3) to introduce some statistical methods (e.g. time series analysis, spatial statistics, extreme value analysis) to analyze this kind of data to "answer" (perform statistical inference) the questions of interest.

Remote Sensing: Interppolation
Interpolation is the process of using points with known values to estimate values at other unknown points. It can be used to predict unknown values for any geographic point data, such as elevation, rainfall, noise levels, atmospheric components and so on.
The Inverse Distance Weighting (IDW) assumes each input point to have a local influence that diminishes with distance. It assumes that closer things are more alike than those that are farther apart. It weights the points closer to the processing cell greater than those further away. A specified number of points, or all points within a specified radius can be used to determine the output value of each location. To predict a value for any unmeasured location, IDW will use the measured values surrounding the prediction location. Those measured values closest to the prediction location will have more influence on the predicted value than those farther away.
Spline estimates values using a mathematical function that minimizes overall surface curvature, resulting in a smooth surface that passes exactly through the input points. This method is best for gently varying surfaces, such as elevation, water table heights, or pollution concentrations. A Regularized method creates a smooth, gradually changing surface with values that may lie outside the sample data range.
Kriging is a geostatistical interpolation technique that considers both the distance and the degree of variation between known data points when estimating values in unknown areas. Kriging assumes that the distance or direction between sample points reflects a spatial correlation that can be used to explain variation in the surface. The Kriging tool fits a mathematical function to a specified number of points, or all points within a specified radius, to determine the output value for each location. Kriging is a multistep process; it includes exploratory statistical analysis of the data, variogram modeling, creating the surface, and (optionally) exploring a variance surface. Kriging is most appropriate when you know there is a spatially correlated distance or directional bias in the data. It is often used in soil science and geology.
Trend is a statistical method that finds the surface that fits the sample points using a least-square regression fit. It fits one polynomial equation to the entire surface. This results in a surface that minimizes surface variance in relation to the input values. The surface is constructed so that for every input point, the total of the differences between the actual values and the estimated values (i.e., the variance) will be as small as possible.

Unsupervised Distance Based Detection of Outliers by using Anti-hubs

The ANNs performed slightly better than the IBL models. The models performed better at a deep water location compared to a shallow water location near the coast, where other environmental factors may influence wave patterns beyond wind conditions alone. While the data-driven methods showed potential, more comprehensive historical data could improve the accuracy of wind-wave forecasting in the Caspian Sea region.

Applied Mathematics project final report
This document provides a case study on forecasting monthly exceedance probabilities of solar radiation in Arizona. It discusses collecting solar radiation data from five stations in different locations in Arizona. The authors define exceedance probability as the probability of daily radiation being below an expected value. They use normalized distributions and simple linear regression to predict monthly exceedance probabilities and compare them to actual probabilities calculated from later test data. 2003-12-04 Evaluation of the ASOS Light Scattering Network

Researchers face challenges in analyzing this big data in real-time to extract useful insights while filtering out unnecessary data due to issues of scale, data heterogeneity, and hardware reliability. Scientists are working on solutions such as improved hardware, optimized data collection methods, and scalable algorithms to better analyze both the growing quantities of structured and unstructured scientific data.

This document compares four recent boundary detection methods: Boundary Detection with Sketch Tokens, Crisp Boundary Detection Using Pointwise Mutual Information, Oriented Edge Forests for Boundary Detection, and Fast Edge Detection Using Structured Forests. This document discusses a two-level data fusion model for periodic wireless sensor networks. At the first level, sensor nodes send the most common measurement to cluster heads using similarity functions to minimize data. The second level applies fusion at cluster heads to remove similar multi-attribute measurements using multiple correlation to detect events accurately with minimum delay. Experimental results validate the proposed model reduces data transfer, redundancy, and energy consumption over existing techniques, while also enabling early event detection in emergencies.

Accurate prediction of electricity demand can bring extensive benefits to any country as the
forecast values help the relevant authorities to take decisions regarding electricity generation,
transmission and distribution much appropriately. The literature reveals that, when compared
to conventional time series techniques, the improved artificial intelligent approaches provide
better prediction accuracies. However, the accuracy of predictions using intelligent approaches
like neural networks are strongly influenced by the correct selection of inputs and the number of
neuro-forecasters used for prediction. This research shows how a cluster analysis performed to
group similar day types, could contribute towards selecting a better set of neuro-forecasters in
neural networks. Daily total electricity demands for five years were considered for the analysis
and each date was assigned to one of the thirteen day-types, in a Sri Lankan context. As a
stochastic trend could be seen over the years, prior to performing the k-means clustering, the
trend was removed by taking the first difference of the series. Three different clusters were
found using Silhouette plots, and thus three neuro-forecasters were used for predictions. This
paper illustrates the proposed modified neural network procedure using electricity demand
data.

The complex relationship between human activities and the environment has been the focus
of extensive research and worry. As the global community grapples with swift urbanization,
population expansion, and economic progress, the effects on natural ecosystems are becoming
more evident. A crucial element of this impact is the alteration of vegetation cover, which plays a
significant role in maintaining the ecological equilibrium of our planet.Land serves as the foundation for all human activities and provides the necessary materials for
these activities. As the most crucial natural resource, its utilization by humans results in different
'Land uses,' which are determined by both human activities and the physical characteristics of the
land.
The utilization of land is impacted by human needs and environmental factors. In countries
like India, rapid population growth and the emphasis on extensive resource exploitation can lead
to significant land degradation, adversely affecting the region's land cover.
Therefore, human intervention has significantly influenced land use patterns over many
centuries, evolving its structure over time and space. In the present era, these changes have
accelerated due to factors such as agriculture and urbanization. Information regarding land use and
cover is essential for various planning and management tasks related to the Earth's surface,
providing crucial environmental data for scientific, resource management, policy purposes, and
diverse human activities.
Accurate understanding of land use and cover is imperative for the development planning
of any area. Consequently, a wide range of professionals, including earth system scientists, land
and water managers, and urban planners, are interested in obtaining data on land use and cover
changes, conversion trends, and other related patterns. The spatial dimensions of land use and
cover support policymakers and scientists in making well-informed decisions, as alterations in

- The question or problem I chose to answer was how to determine the temperature and precipitation for two seasons of the year at a location that is not reasonably close to a National Weather Service Weather Station.
- Sample and definition of interpolation
- Wet Season is October – March and the dry season is April - September
- This slide shows all of the area weather stations in California that I considered for this study. The stations are identified by their three letter National Weather Service location code. I narrowed it down to these stations at first because they are “reasonably” close for the area. As you can see, around Old Dale there are not many weather reporting stations.
- This slide shows all of the National Weather Service stations located within 150 kilometers of Old Dale. I had to use such a broad range because of the lack of close (other than NXP, Twentynine Palms) official weather stations. I widened my range until I felt I had enough data points to try to make some reasonable analyses.
- I chose IDW for my interpolation method because it considers both the sample point’s distance and value from the estimated cells. Points closer to the cell have a greater influence on the cell’s estimated value than those that are farther away.
- Average dry season precipitation at Old Dale using IDW. Precipitation for the dry season (April – September) is in the range of 0.2-0.4 centimeters (.07 - .15 inches). As you can see from the analysis the precipitation closely follows that of the NXP weather station (29 Palms). This data was in the appropriate range for a location in the Mojave Desert region.
- Analysis of IDW Average Dry Season Temperatures. Again the value closely follows that of the nearest reporting station of 29 Palms. Both locations received an average temperature of 25 degrees Celsius (77 degrees Fahrenheit). For the dry season this would be an appropriate value for the desert.
- Analysis of the average IDW Wet Season Temperature. Values closely follow station NXP (29 Palms). For the months of October – March the average wet season precipitation was in the range of 0.2-1.2 centimeters (.07 - .47 inches). Being a desert areas even in the “wet” seasons the average rain received is not that high an amount.
- Analysis of IDW Average Wet Season Temperatures. The average temperature again closely followed Twentynine Palms at 12.8-13.8 degrees Celsius (around 55.4 degrees Fahrenheit).
