This document discusses renewable energy projects in developing countries and their potential to create jobs.  Renewable Energy is considered the way of the future for energy
generation.
 Renewable energy provides an opportunity for SSA to cross over
directly into environment of clean energy, thereby circumventing
the problem that Europe is dealing with currently: possessing an
existing grid and an existing energy production, which over time will
be substituted, and this is expected to require large amount of
finances.
 Developing countries could then utilize renewable energy to satisfy
its energy needs and wouldn't require obsolete and polluting
infrastructure.
 However, mainly indirect and temporary jobs are created.

 Limited to no support from implementing government

 Incompetent organizations implementing projects (In the long run
leading to loss of already created jobs).
 Absence of a sustainable management method for implemented RE
projects.

 All the above leads to losses in already created jobs and limits the
number of jobs that should be created with future projects.

 In order for public projects to create gainful employment it must be
operational and sustainable through:-
 Provision of adequate planning and implementation strategies that
includes the corresponding local communities participating in task and
shared responsibilities. This has proven to be a very successful strategy
in some implemented renewable energy projects.
 Local community stakeholders should be educated on the technology,
its operation and benefits. The recommendation is that sustainable
development is achieved through a combination of training and
resource provision together.
 Federal government should create/make available investment
opportunities for the manufacturing and dissemination of the
technologies locally.

8. Solution – Private Perspective
 Include local community as stakeholders in projects.
 Train local individuals to maintain and manage RE projects. Multiple Benefits
exists for this:-
 Direct jobs created for local individuals within the community.
 Protection of RE Infrastructures.
 Local community possess a feeling of responsibility towards the project.
 Application is possible in both small and medium sized projects. Since
this case is more of an off-grid (mini or micro) energy generation.
Integrating the corresponding community is a very important step to
achieve the sustainable aspect of the implemented project.
 Implementing organizations should not only tell beneficiaries what to
do or what is good, but actually provide them with the tools to do it,
start doing it with them, and gradually build their knowledge and
understanding through that process. In this way sustainable
development is achieved.

created per project through physical monitoring of infrastructure and

and Indirect Jobs (through enhancement of business activities),

10. Impact
 Generation of clean energy and contributing to a cleaner
environment
 Multiple permanent jobs are created in the areas where
implementation are executed. In addition, other jobs are
created through available investments for RE implementation
or technology creation.
 Economic development and founding of new businesses and
small businesses are able to operate efficiently
 Education – Educational institutions are able to provide
adequate learning experience to students. Practical findings
also included the creation of jobs in schools.
 Ubuntu – Community togetherness has been seen to be on an
increase.

11. Conclusion
 Several studies have been completed that indicated that millions
of jobs will be created in the renewable energy sector over the
next decade.
 This will only be possible if recommendations towards
implementing sustainable RE projects are taken into account.
 The result will be the creation of gainful employment with every
implemented project, whether small, medium or large scale.
