Manyara Region of northern Tanzania around early
sixties.
• Ashoka Fellow-Innovators for the Public
Since -2003.
• I have Community Environmental Awards by the Ministry
of Natural resources & Tourism 2003 & 2004.
• Social entrepreneur of the 2014 by Schwab foundation in
partnership with World Economic Forum.
• A number of other Awards on Human Rights & Land
• Master of Science in Community Economic Development
and other various professions.

BRIEF SUMMARY PRESENTATION
Nov. 2014.
• IOPA is a Hybrid Social Development Organization based
and operates in the northern regions of Tanzania of
(Arusha, Kilimanjaro and Manyara); It has both social
programs and a number social business/enterprises.
• Established in December 1991 and legally registered with
the government of Tanzania in February 1993 and re-
register in 2004 with the registrar of companies (cap; 212)
as a Company limited by Guarantees. With over one
thousand and eighty members (1084) pastoral men and
Women and working with over 126 self-help and
Community Economic development groups, which are
affiliated and identified themselves with IOPA in Simanjiro,
Same and Loongiito districts.

Environmental Conservation that entails
Community Economic Rights .
The IOPA Strategy:
• IOPA facilitates and promotes transformation
and diversification of the economic system of the
Maasai through facilitation of social business,
Social entrepreneurship , innovations and
Creativity, by helping villages both diversify the
pastoral economic base and meet their local
needs and markets potentials for local income
generation. Livestock production, Land and
Natural Resource Management are key to this
economic empowerment of the Maasai peoples.
IOPA Strategic Objectives.
-Institute for Orkonerei Pastoralists Advancement develops a regional network,
consisting of organizations that are using Social business as transformative force
for social change, institutions and individuals that identify themselves with the
organization vision.
-Development and coordination of a regional network of local initiatives, applying
existing knowledge, evaluation and quality standards.
-Development of strategic projects for specific investment opportunities for
global partners onsite.
-Development of global partnerships to create access to employment for
disadvantaged Pastoralists Communities.

TERRAT SMART VILLAGE
TERRAT, SMART VILLAGE
• The village has been established in 1976
• Has a population of over 7000 people.
• The Terrat township has a population of 1262 people.
• The village has 12 sub-villages (Vitongoji).
• Its in Simanjiro District in Manyara region in Northern
Tanzania.
• Its an off-grid village 90 km south of Arusha City.
• Its Mainly a Pastoralists inhabited villages and their main
occupation is livestock keeping.
• It has become a business hub for the surrounding 12 villages
in the region
2. Energy & Water Supply Social
Enterprise.
• Produce 368 kw of Electricity. (Through 4 Bio –Diesel Generators)
• Jatropha & Croton oil pressing and Refinery to make bio –diesel to
runs generators and public vehicles.
• Connected 246 household with electricity including Schools, Health
centre, Churches and Mosque as well as 8 water boreholes in Terrat
village and the surrounding villages.
• 8 Boreholes that produce approximately 400,000 of water per day
for domestic and livestock as well as wildlife.
• Supply electricity to a Community Radio station, Milk processing
Plant and boreholes.
• Provide electricity to small businesses in the Terrat village owned by
individual entrepreneurs.

1. Engitengs Milk Processing &
Marketing Social Business.
• We had Established 5 Milk Processing Plants in five villages in
Simanjiro, Loongiito and Same districts.
• These Milk processing Unit Can process 1000 -1500 litres of milk
per day in each processing plants.
• Milk products produced are Cheese, Yogurt, Butter and Ghee as
well as Juice made out of WEY products.
• We Buy Milk from local Maasai women in the surrounding
villages.(Over 500 in each village on daily basis.
• Marketing of Milk products in towns and cities like Arusha, Dar-es
Salaam, Zanzibar and Nairobi.
• Women income has increased fairly highly, just last year there was a
circulation of about 400 million in Terrat village due to Milk
business.(On Social Return on Investment report on Milk processing
alone shows women income double for last three years) .

• Orkonerei Radio Station is Community Radio established in
1995 and went on air in 22nd June 2002.
• We Broadcasting at a radius of 100 km space distance at
Frequency MHz 94.4. broadcasting for 18 hours a day.
• Estimated reached listeners population of Maasai people
and other Tanzanian of 2 million listeners.
• Local rural Internet café.
• Video/TV program for Production of development &
entertainment documentaries.
• Mobile TV Show for Community consumption for education
and Community organising (Public Addressing systems).
• We have established and runs 4 Community Libraries and
Documentation centres.

Water Supply
IOPA operates 12 water boreholes in seven
villages in Terrat, Sukuro, Orkesumet (Simanjiro
district); Emugur (Same District); Oltepesi and
Ranchi villages in Loongiito district. Its has also
constructed four Water Dams for rain –water
harvest one in Simanjiro plains, One in Loongiito
district, and two in Same district. These water
dams provide large numbers of livestock, wildlife
and human with water supply.

the biggest water point provides water to
more 3,765,325 livestock and more 1, 256,000
people on yearly basis.
