It has evolved since its invention in 1912, with key developments in the 1970s allowing modern geoexchange systems. Geoexchange uses vertical or horizontal ground loops or water loops to circulate water through a ground source heat pump for space heating and cooling. It provides benefits like reduced energy costs up to 70%, lower emissions, and maintenance savings of 20-50% over traditional HVAC systems. The largest geoexchange system installed is at Fort Polk, Louisiana, saving $3.3 million per year.
