The Genitive Case

  Show Possession
In English we show possession with
‘s, s’, or the preposition OF.

e.g. (for example)

This is Julia’s book.

The girls’ mom will be
  here soon.

The commander of the
  troops withdrew from
  the field.
In Latin we use genitive endings to make
a word show possession. Here are those
                endings:

                           1st 2nd 3rd
                   Sing. -ae -i -is
                   Plural -arum -orum -um
Here are some examples of the Genitive
             case from your reading.

Gaia est filia Iuliae. -ae is genitive sing. – 1st declension
Gaia is the daughter of Julia.
   Gaia is Julia’s daughter.

Spurius est filius Gai. -i is genitive sing. – 2nd declension
      Spurius is Gaius’ son.
Spurius is the son of Gaius.

Comitēs meī patris adsunt.        -is is genitive sing. – 3rd declension
      My father’s comrades are here.
Remember, it is the GENITIVE that tells you
            the declension of the noun!

     Nouns are listed in
      the dictionary:
       Nominative.,
      Genitive, gender

cena, cenae, f. dinner – 1st
amicus, amici, m. friend – 2nd
mors, mortis, f. death – 3rd
