The Genitive Case Show Possession
In English we show possession with ‘s, s’, or the preposition OF. e.g.   (for example) This is Julia’s book. The girls’ mom will be here soon. The commander of the troops withdrew from the field.
In Latin we use genitive endings to make a word show possession.  Here are thoseendings:
Here are some examples of the Genitive case from your reading. Gaia estfiliaIuliae.-ae is genitive sing. – 1st declension 	Gaia is the daughter of Julia. 	Gaia is Julia’s daughter. SpuriusestfiliusGai.			-iis genitive sing. – 2nd declension Spurius is Gaius’ son. Spurius is the son of Gaius. Comitēsmeīpatrisadsunt. 	   -is is genitive sing. – 3rd declension  		My father’s comrades are here.
Remember, it is the GENITIVE that tells you the declension of the noun! Nouns are listed in the dictionary: Nominative., Genitive, gender cena, cenae, f. dinner – 1st amicus, amici, m. friend – 2nd mors, mortis, f. death – 3rd
