Histopathology Lab Organization
MLT 4 semester
Multan Institute of Health sciences
What is Histopathology
• Histopathology is the diagnosis and study of
diseases of the tissues, and involves examining
tissues and/or cells under a microscope.
Histopathologists are responsible for making
tissue diagnoses and helping clinicians
manage a patient’s care.
What is Histopathology Laboratory
• Histopathology Laboratory is specially designed
to undergo histopathological diagnosis like
studying the malignant or benign condition of
tissue
• In this Laboratory we also study morphology of
tissues
• In Immunohistochemistry section presence of
specific antigen or special molecules on tissue is
detected. We detect the presence of tumor
marker to indentify different types cancer
General Organization
• Biopsy Collection Unit
There are different types of Biopsies. Biopsy is
majorly done by physician or surgeon. Insure
Biopsy is properly labelled with specific
information's about patient.
• Grossing Unit for selection of required part of
tissue for further processing. Inking is also
performed to separate different parts in same
biopsy.
General Organization
• Fixation centre ( with a huge space to store fixed specimens)
• Decalcification unit ( Specially in case of bones to perform better
sectioning in microtomy)
• Automated Tissue Processor or Manual Tissue Processing unit in
case automated tissue processor is not available
• Embedding unit ( Embedding is mostly done with paraffin wax)
• Microtomy Unit ( In this section embedded tissues are cut into thin
sections to study the tissues under microscope most effectively)
• Staining Section ( It consist of routine staining section as well as
special staining section)
• A huge storage area for storage of Stained Slides (Most of the slides
are stored for long period of time)
