This document provides an overview of astrology, including its history, methodology, and views in Islam. 4. WHAT IS ASTROLOGY
 The word astrology comes from the early Latin
word astrologia,which derives from the Greek
στρολογίαἀ —from στρονἄ astron ("star") and
-λογία -logia, ("study of"—"account of the stars").
Astrologia later passed into meaning 'star-
divination' with astronomia used for the scientific
term.

conjunction of planets Jupiter and Saturn in Pisces.

he calculated the last date this occurred to be 7 bc.—
could this be when the wise men saw the star and

 made Astrology popular early this century with the
launching of radio
 She had her own show, where she gave people
horoscopes and predicted their future.
 Ms. Adams was arrested for fraud by fortune-telling
in NY, she could have paid a fine, instead she forced
it to court.

she gave a detailed personality profile and predicted an

conducted a study of
1,000 adults (1971) .
 Tested personality
traits of Leos and
found no correlation
for leadership etc.
 The tendencies did not
differ between signs.
 Gauquelin (1979) gave
free horoscopes.
 Recipients responded
to the accuracy.
 94% said was
accurate and so did
90% of friends and
family.
 All of them had the
same horoscope--of a
mass murderer.

for the week and rated on good, bad, and vague
(1982).
 Found little consistency between horoscopes.
 For instance, one said it would be a good week, one
said it would be a bad week.

causality. Therefore,
the moon does not
effect behavior.

28. ISLAMIC VIEWS ABOUT ASTROLOGY
 Islam clearly prohibits astrology as well as
beliefs and practices linked to it. Astrology is
used by the Hindus of India, for instance, chiefly
for looking into the future and finding out which
time is “good” and which time is “bad”.

 And from the Islamic point of view, future
is ghayb (the unseen) and nobody knows ghayb,
except Allah Almighty as the following verses
clearly teach us:
 {Say: None in the heavens or earth knows
the unseen except Allah.}(Quran 27:65)
 {With Him are the keys to the unseen and
none knows it except He}(Quran 6:59)
