Barbarians at the Gate
A Book Review
Barbarians At The Gate
The Fall of RJR Nabisco
By
Bryan Burrough and John Helyar
Barbarians at the Gate has been called one of the most influential business books of all time the
definitive account of the frenzy that overtook Wall Street in October and November of 1988 from
the leveraged buyout of RJR Nabisco, Inc. by Kohlberg Kravis Roberts Co. for $24.9 billion. It was
the largest takeover in Wall Street history. It was co written by Bryan Burrough and John Helyar,
both journalists for the Wall Street Journal. They wrote a series of articles about the takeover
attempt. In 1989, they obtained additional information for the book by doing over 100 interviews.
They interviewed all the major people ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Although his control of the leveraged buyout was quickly usurped by the investment bankers and
lawyers, he remained a central figure throughout the story.
Shearson Lehman had pressed for the implementation of the normal gun to the head strategy,
offering the board of directors a complete, fully financed bid and giving the board little alternative
but to accept it. Johnson, believing that he had the board under control, had refused and the eager
Shearson Lehman had reluctantly agreed. Largely because of the unprecedented size of the
proposed leveraged buyout, the management Shearson Lehman group grossly underestimated the
potential competition and assumed that it would be an uncontested takeover. The estimated $15.5
billion of bank financing necessary to complete the $17.6 billion buyout would use up
approximately three fourths of the bank funds available worldwide for a single transaction
(Burrough, 169).
At first, in the bidding war to buy out RJR Nabisco, Johnson appeared to hold all the cards. He
certainly believed so. He was convinced that the board would approve his offer because they
needed him. He seems to have believed they liked him, too, and were his friends. But he had made
many enemies on his climb up the corporate ladder, and several of these conspired in the end to
deprive him of the ultimate prize in management, and hundreds of thousands of dollars in personal
earnings.

Battle Of Trenton Summary
On December 16th, 1776, George Washington crossed the Delaware River and attacked the
Hessian troops located in Trenton, New Jersey. It started when a Philadelphian, General Thomas
Mifflin, rallied the militia because they were shamed by The American Crisis. By Christmas,
Washington still barely had 6,000 troops fit for duty, knowing that he started getting
reinforcements after the rally. Timing was important because if he waited, the enlistments would
expire and the Delaware River would freeze. Finally, on Christmas night of 1776, the layer of ice
covering the Delaware river cracked, allowing Washington and his troops to cross the river. This
included 2,400 veteran troops and 18 cannons into Durham Boats. Many troops had to walk in the
freezing cold grounds with their bare feet, leaving bloody footprints all around. Meanwhile,
General James Ewing commanded 1,000 other troops nine miles above Trenton to block any
retreating Hessians occupying Trenton. Originally, Colonel John Cadwalader was planned to cross
the Delaware River, but he unfortunately never made it across through the bitter, cold water.
Washington s plan was to depart at midnight, but due to the weather, it was delayed to 3 in the
morning of the 26th.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

troops enclosed Trenton from all sides. Rall was making efforts to rally his men but was mortally
wounded in action. At the end of the day, Trenton, along with prisoner and equipment, was finally
in the hands of Washington. As a result of Ewing and Cadwalader s failures, Washington couldn t

Disability In Forrest Gump
At the beginning of the film Forrest Gump, society views disability as the medical model of
disability. When Forrest receives leg braces for his extremely crooked spine, it is then depicted
that he is below normal . Forrests new braces make him walk different which caused people in the
neighborhood to stare at him and make stereotypical comments. Although Forrest only carries an
IQ of 75, Mrs. Gump never fails to supports him throughout his life. Mrs. Gump advocates for
Forrest s schooling because she believes he deserves the finest education. When speaking to the

The Multi Layered Nature Of Synesthesia

(Simner). Next came the first mention of synesthesia in scientific literature, Sir Francis Galton
published a paper about synesthesia in the journal Nature in 1880.( Guillochon, May,). Soon after
this publication a Swiss medical student named Eugen Bleuler and Karl Lehmann collected data on
76 synesthesia patients and compiled a book that now is considered a milestone in the history of
synesthesia. (Simner). As a whole the scientific community delved into the study of synesthesia in
the late 19th century and the early 20th century, but in the mid 20th century research subsided until
the 1970s when the study of synesthesia was revived. (Carpenter). Synesthesia history was one of
self discovery and new studies and data about the condition.
The exact cause of synesthesia although not discovered; at the moment the cause can best be
explained by the hypothesis of serotonergic factors. Scientists do in fact though classify three
categories of how one acquired synesthesia. (Brogaard ). The three categories as follows are
developmental synesthesia, acquired synesthesia, and drug induced synesthesia. (Brogaard).
Developmental synesthesia is the most common type; it is the form of the condition that has
continued since birth or early childhood and is most common in people with autism spectrum
disorders. (Brogaard, Safran, ). Acquired synesthesia is a form of the condition which synesthesia

Compare And Contrast Shakespeare Sonnet 130
Sonnet 18 and Sonnet 130, were some of William Shakespeare s most famous sonnets that he ever
wrote. Both sonnets are very similar with the theme of love and beauty; however they contrast each
other in their purpose, style, and whom William Shakespeare is writing the sonnet to. The sonnets
are both written in two different styles of writing. Sonnet18 was written in a more traditional
format, which paints the woman in a divine spotlight. Sonnet 130 however contrasts Sonnet 18 by
instead of describing their subject as being beautiful they rather describing them as with
imperfections and how they love that subject. Shakespeare uses a complimentary tone when he
wrote Sonnet 18 and uses a more ironic and satirical tone in his Sonnet 130. With the help of a
complex metaphor, the tone he uses in each sonnet, and imagery, Shakespeare gives two very
different takes on love and beauty.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The Contradictions Of Women During The Victorian Era
The Victorian Era took place during 1837 1901 and is known as Queen Victoria s time period. She
was the first English monarch to see her name given to a time period while living. It was a time of
rapid advances in scientific, technological and medical knowledge, and even population growth.
Although Victorian England was based around the ideals of proper etiquette and maintaining high
society , the treatment of women during the Victorian Erahighlights the contradictions of this time.
Families in the Victorian Society were known to be rather large consisting of 6 children if they
were wealthy but even larger if they were poor. Women during the 1870 s were known to have
on average six children, but women towards the 1910 s were more likely to have three on
average. Victorian houses differed if you were poor or wealthy. Wealthy families were known to
have large extravagant homes with several bedrooms, large living rooms, parlors and dining
rooms separate from the kitchens. Poor families on the other hand were crowded into one room
that sometimes had to hold families of about twelve children plus the parents. Poor families had
more children because it meant that there were more able bodies to go to work and make money.
There are four social... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the Victorian times it was better for a woman to accept the fact that their place was in the
home taking care of children, cooking, and keeping the house clean. If a wife separated from
her husband and they had one or multiple kids together, then she would lose all of her rights to
see her kids. It was not until 1887 that the Married Woman s Property Act was established. It
gave women the right to own her own property (Thomas and Thomas). Marriage was looked at as
voluntary. The woman had to do all of her tasks after she completed what she was asked to do by
her husband. Marriage was about companionship as well as authority (Tosh 24 and

how many obstacles you have in front of you, to keep trying because there s so much more

The Great Hunger And The Irish Potato Famine
Intro The Great Hunger, Great Famine, the dreaded calamity, or if your outside of Ireland the
Irish Potato Famine. Occurring between 1847 1852, the famine claimed the lives of around one
million people and caused millions to flee Ireland, in order to escape the bleak situation it was.
Today I will be giving some background of life in Irelandbefore the faminestarted of the average
citizen, I will briefly discuss the pathogen that killed the potatocrop, the government response to the
famine, the overall consequences and reactions of the Irish people, and finally I will discuss the
ethical dilemmas that the famine raise.
Slide one Land Ownership Starting off I would like to explain what life was like for the average
Irish citizen in the mid 19th century. Most people were tenant agriculture farmers who worked
for landlords, who owned vast estates, but a great deal of them didn t, in fact, live in Ireland,
which lead to them being commonly referred to as absentee landlords. The landlords allotted
workers small plots of land to grow their own food in exchange for working the land growing
grain cash crops. In order to sustain a high calorie diet for themselves and their families, most of
these tenant farmers grew potatoes. This was primarily due to the fact you get a lot of bang for
your buck from potatoes as they yielded quite a bit of calories per acre. Outside of what the
tenants ate, Ireland produced quite a bit of food but this was mostly exported to England where

The first conduct is general standards of conduct is when the employee builds a relationship
amongst trust, loyalty, honesty, and responsibility within the company. The employee will have
the responsibility to follow the rules and procedures to uphold the company guidelines of interest

the laws and rules of conduct regarding the form of harassment and other discriminatory

company is definitely not afraid of over exposure. Apple keeps consumers anticipating the next

According to the article by Carr, Apple s margins declined and the company does not have any
new products in the pipeline. (Carr, 2013) However, one would be seriously delusional to this that
Steve Jobs was just thinking in the present. Jobs was a forward thinker and marketing would have
continued to present ideas that are being worked on presently. Carr s article sites that fact that
Apple s quantum leaps were never fast and furious. (Carr, 2013) This in itself would substantiate
that there is something in the pipeline and Wall Street is anticipating the new arrival.

The First Source By Qui Jin
Both primary sources being compared come from Chapter 18 in Worlds Together, Worlds apart.
The first source was written by Qui Jin, an early twentieth century Chinese feminist. In her essay
titled An Address to Two Hundred Million Fellow Country Women, she details the injustices to
Chinese women in this period. Jin also connects the fate of the Country to chinese women s
futures. By doing so she puts a nationalist view into her essay. The other source is another feminist
piece; this time coming from Bahithat al Badiya, where she criticizes Egypt s religious traditions
in effect to women s freedom. Both women show some of the feminist ideas that were circling
society at the beginning of the twentieth century. Throughout the turn of the century worldwide
insecurities were rampant. Although modernism was Another insecurity would be the changing of
roles for women in a society that was already losing many social constructs due to the rising
popularity of modernist views. However, with decreasing economies and job loss, people start
turning on their governments, and trying to revert to older more traditional ways. Modern views
were starting to be rejected by many, and the growing anxieties of modern women fed to the views
that change is for the worst. Both these women s radical views represented the desire for new
identities. A common desire for the time, as people grew dissatisfied with their governments and
wanted reform. Although a small group, Chinese feminists were

Analysis Of The Suffering Servant Of Isaiah 53
Bock s book is a compilation of essays by a number of different people who believe that Jesus is
the Messiah and as the title shares, that Jesus is the Suffering Servant of Isaiah 53. There are three
parts that the volume is divided into. Richard Averbeck starts off the text by analyzing Christian
interpretations of Isa 52.13 53.12. The chapter supplies a helpful discussion of Franz Delitzsch s
interpretation of a three level pyramid. In the pyramid, the servant songs in Isaiahhave a sweeping
reference to Israel as an elect nation as well as a more specific indication to the remnant within
Israel. Then the most precise referent being the Suffering Servant who exemplifies the assignment
of the remnant for Israel and Israel for the nations.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Two sermons are used to show the reader how to preach Isaiah 53. John S. Feinberg gives a
timely discussion on the postmodern themes in Isaiah 53. Feinburg puts emphasis on the
narrative of postmoderns and stresses the personal narrative structure of the chapter by
asserting, It is also the story of a God who wants so desperately to have a relationship with his
people that he sent his servant to tell them and show them how much he cares for them (p. 214).
Mitch Glaser presents his own testimony of how Isaiah 53 was useful in his own growth and
testimony. He overviews some of the differing methods in which Isaiah 53 has been and is used
in evangelism to Jewish people. Then he analyzes the polemical use from contemporary
objections and responses to those objections to Isaiah 53. He explains orthodox Jewish objections
to Isaiah 53 s use by Christians as opposed to the average Jewish person s more secular outlook to
the passage. Too often, we assume that Jews think like Christians when it comes to God s holiness,
personal sin, and blood atonement. However, this is not so.
The scholarship of the book overall is terrific. It includes well known and trustworthy scholars
providing the solid and competent scholarship I was expecting. The Evangelical side of some of
the authors was not as strong as it could have been, especially in the discussion of the historical
critical approach to Isaiah. The evangelistic aim of the book may confuse some; however, the clear
aim is to convert. The writiers are only taking the commandment of God to make disciples and
preparing fellow Christians with the knowledge they may need when approaching a

Positive Benefits Of Homeschooling
In the modern world that we live in today, education is considered paramount. Although in the
United States our education level is not nearly at the rank wed like, we still place a great emphasis
on programs to shape the youth of tomorrow. There is, however, one organization for education that
is not fueled by government spending homeschool. Homeschoolingis a practice that is looked upon
from the outside as alien simply for being different, and the stereotypical view that many hold of
it is false. In fact, because of a lack of bad influences, the addition positive social effects, and
outstanding academic performance, the case can be made that homeschooling is more beneficial
than public schooling to students. The way that every child is started in homeschooling at a young
age is because of their parents. In a survey of why parents decide to enter their children into
homeschooling, 85.4 responded that it is because of a concern about the environment of other
schools (Dumas 8). Things like drugs and alcohol are all accessible easily in public school from
various vendors trying to get children hooked at young ages. By taking out the medium through
which they transport their product, parents are removing their children from harms way. Another
bad influence to children in public school is conformity. Noteworthy researcher Tanya Dumas
writes that one of the primary benefits of homeschooling is the ability to tailor the education to the
needs of each student and to work one on one

Programs like superior edge can be expected to be developed and adopted by many more
universities to come. Nonprofit organizations reap the benefits of programs like superior edge
through the experience and professional documents that they get from the students in the program.
Academic service learning projects have become one of the best ways for Universities to make
sure that their students are ready for the real world.
Topic for Investigation: How do academic service learning projects done by graduate students
differ or relate to undergraduate students in perspective on the impact made on nonprofits? As
programs such as superior edge have been developed and University requirements have been
changed to enforce the idea of student involvement the overall impact has been positive to both
nonprofit programs as well as to the student. Looking further into these projects, it is now when

Concussions In High School Football
Our society would not be what it is today without the world of sports. In the United States,
football has become an essential part of Sunday plans to over 250 million people. While
numerous people of all ages watch the sport, many people play it as well. This includes over one
million high schoolers who participate in the sport at their schools. For many, football games are
some of the most memorable high schoolmoments. However, football isn t all about the fans and
school spirit; the players themselves face enormous risks just by stepping out on the field.
Concussions and other health concerns have become more common than ever in football,
especially with the youth. A concussionis a traumatic brain injury, and in sports, they are usually
caused by an impact or blow to the head. These injuries leave a lasting impact and can greatly
impact one s life. High school football is too dangerous in today s world due to the extensive and
life threatening injuries that commonly occur in the sport. First and foremost, kids and teens are
prone to getting concussions, and they can result in some short term effects. For example, they are
the most notable injury found in young athletes. Out of kids 18 and under, about 1.1 1.9 million
sports related concussions occur every year in the United States alone (Yang). In addition, there
may be some symptoms that occur directly after the incident takes place. This includes headaches,
blurred vision, and nausea. It is also common for a collision to occur and the athlete remain
conscious during the event (CDC). Similarly, there are some different symptoms that tend to show
up shortly after the injury. If someone faces excessive fatigue, sensitivity to light, and changes in
sleep patterns, then there s a possibility that they have suffered from a concussion (Injuries).
Although these short term effects can impact a person s daily life for a little while, the long term
effects are detrimental. Consequently, concussions can cause life changing alterations further on in
time. The real danger lies in repetitive concussions and returning before it has fully healed.
According to Jingzhen Yang, Untreated or improperly managed concussions can increase the risk of

going to be about basic financial and management accounting principles and techniques used in
today s working society, with the aim to introduce how daily transactions activities are partaken in
the working environment as an accountant. The report will also discuss about the main branches in
within business accounting and will talk about concepts, policies and principles in accounting.
As written on Business News Daily, accounting is: Vital to a strong company, keeping track of the
business s finances and its continued profitability , (Martin, 2015). It is certainly vital and
important that companies and businesses acquire understanding and knowledge on accounting, but
also individuals should acquire knowledge in accounting for personal benefit. This is because in the
today s society and civilization, people use accounting in their daily lives. For example when they
study financial statements to make investment decisions, assess interest rates to pay off their
houses mortgages and calculate rates for house bills and car payments.

Mt Adams Is The Second Largest Volcano
Introduction Simultaneously, Mt Adams is the second highest mountain and the most under
looked volcano in Washington State. In terms of volume, Mt. Adams is the second largest
volcano (behind Mt. Shasta) in the Cascade Range (Alt Hyndman 1984). Since it has been
relatively quiet for the past couple millennia, it does not receive as much attention as it s
counterparts and draws very few tourists due to it s remote setting (Hill 2004). Prior to recent
research, not much was known regarding Mt. Adam s eruptive history, frequency or how
explosive previous eruptions have been. (Hildreth Lanphere 1994). In this paper, I will discuss the
geography, history, geology, and hazards of Mt. Adams and it s surrounding area; focusing heavily
on its geology and geologic hazards. 2 пїјпїјFigure 2: Mt. Adams from the east (USGS 2013).
History In the early 1800 s, the Lewis and Clark Expedition noted seeing Mt. Adams, which they
initially mistook as Mount St. Helens. At this time, Mt. St. Helens had already been discovered
and given its name. This was the first documented sighting of the stratovolcano by European
explorers (USGS 2013). Mt. Adams got its name in a moderately shameful way. In the mid 1800
s, there was a plan to name the volcanoes in the Cascade Range after United States presidents. In
honor of President John Adams, a mapmaker named Mt. Adams by mistake, as the name was
originally meant for what is now today Mt. Hood. To make matters worst, Mt. Adams was not

Anorexia Not just a womens disease Anorexia: Not Just A Women s Disease Oh I m so fat . This
is not something we normally think of hearing out of a man s mouth. Women are thought to be the

people in the United States with anorexia, about ten percent of the cases are men (Something

In fact, one third of high school wrestlers starve themselves to make weight (WebMd Health par.

wrestlers can get into a lower weight class. And unlike with most sports, where the athletes stop
their behavior after the sports season is over, wrestlers tend to continue there behavior all year
round. An average wrestler s body fat is three percent lower than a normal high school student

Although he s not anorexic, he has done some crazy, and very unhealthy things for wrestling.
His coach makes the wrestlers spit all the time. I ve witnessed this at school. I could always tell
who the wrestlers were, because they would be walking down the hall and all of a sudden spit
into the garbage can. This was one of their many ways to dehydrate themselves to loose weight.
The wrestlers rarely ate anything at lunch when I was in school, and if they did, it was hardly
anything. I often noticed my brother wouldn t eat dinner with us at home, and I got really
worried. When I would nag him about eating, his response was always the same, I have to make
weight . This making weight as they called it, involves losing enough weight so they can wrestle in

Terraces In Dante s Inferno
Dante after descending through hell and escaping its darkness starts a climb up Mount
Purgatory. Throughout his trek he converses with many souls in the different terraces. He is
again led by Virgil who corrects Dante and answers his questions along the way up the mountain.
Dante sees the whips or examples of every virtue and the bridle the vice that one must overcome
to move on to the next terrace. With this guidance Dante is able to learn multiple lessons about
the perversion, excessive use, and the deficient use of love, which will help him to reach the
Earthly Paradise and eventually the Paradiso. The first three terraces that Dante encounters are
the terraces of the Proud, Envious, and Slothful. All three of these sins have in some way a
perversion of love. The proud have perversions of love for self and instead have a contempt for
their neighbors. Dante understands this after seeing that in order to cleanse this virtue they must
be lowered to the ground so they are bowing to each other making them humble. The envious
have a perversion of love of their own good which instead is the want of a neighbor s goods.
Their eyes are shut and all they can hear are stories of generosity and mercy. Dante understands
that in order to overcome their love of others goods the envious must find love again in their own
goods by being in solitude. The... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Why Did The Homeland Security Act Of 2002 Change The Cbp
1 What is the role of Customs and Border Protection (CBP) in securing trade in maritime ports?
Additionally, how did the Homeland Security Act of 2002 change the structure of CBP?
The Homeland Security Act of 2002 changed the structure of many organizations and agencies
within the law enforcement realm. The horrific terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 brought to
light the many shortcomings our country had when it came to the gathering on intelligence,
information sharing and the overall response and protection of the country. The Homeland Security
Act of 2002 is a direct reflection and response to those very short falls. Under the Homeland
Security Act of 2002, the structure of the Customs and Border Protection (CBP) changed
drastically. On March 1, 2003, employees from the U.S Customs Service, Immigration and
Naturalization Service and Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service came together to create the
Bureau of Customs and Border Protection (Staff, 2016, p. 1).
The CBP has an extremely important role in protecting the United States border and that most
certainly involves protecting the maritime and port operations within the United States. Under the
Homeland Security Act of 2002, which ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The Axum Empire, Byzantine And Aztec Empires
In many societies, the elites or aristocrats are given the chance to have a more luxurious life than
everyone else. They are handed more political, economic and social power. Specifically in the
Indian, Byzantine and Aztec empires, elites were allowed to have almost complete control over
the people of the land. They are allowed to make, break and enforce rules to their discretion. The
aristocrats were given respect, land, food, and care far superior to anyone else in the region.
The Axum kingdom illustrated the potential of trade to boost economic development and support
political development. Axum was originally a small kingdom whose merchants traded from the
port of Adulis on the Red Sea. While Axumite merchants traded with Muslim merchants on a
regular basis, they were challenged by Muslim forces. However, they were able to maintain
independence and prosperity because of its large participation in trading routes of the Indian Ocean.
The term caste refers to a social class of hereditary and usually unchangeable status. When the
Aryans first implemented the caste system in India, they used the term varna, meaning color, to
refer to major social classes. There were five main varnas: brahmins (priests); kshatriyas (warriors
and aristocrats); vaishyas (cultivators, artisans, and merchants); shudras (landless peasants, and
serfs); and untouchables (people who performed unpleasant tasks such as handling dead bodies or
butchering animals). As society became more complex and

It s amazing what a secret can do to a person. Keeping secrets among friends can be fun, or helpful

The family is permanently altered by their secret, which becomes a growing moral cancer to them,

Technological Advancements Impact On Business Growth And...
Introduction
Technology has always played a major role in business growth and development. Its application has
risen at an unimaginable rate among enterprises. The resultant effect is that organizations
continuously experience innovation resulting from technological advances. The assimilation of
technology promotes modifications in organizational processes, tasks, and the nature of work. The
technology driven changes bring about an increase in the number of people using technological
devices such as computers to perform tasks. Technological advancements tremendously affect
employee s morale, nature of tasks, and impacts interactions among co workers. The managers of
technological changes need to play both the roles of implementers and technical developers. The
introduction of technology to an organization comes with a vast array of challenges to the
management.
Most of the changes in the marketplace are driven by technological advancements. Technological
innovations in the marketplace are categorized into two, namely: sustaining and disruptive
innovations. Innovations that do not significantly impact the existing markets are defined as
sustaining innovations. Disruptive innovations, on the other hand, are innovations that result into a
new market and value network. They disrupt existing markets and value networks. Whether
sustaining or disrupting, businesses are supposed to anticipate change and prepare in advance.
Appropriate action is required to deal with changing

Three Years She Gew Research Paper
The English Romantic Age, which lasted from the late 18th century to the middle of the 19th
century, was born of the ideas of William Wordsworth, British poet and author. Many critics of this
era believe that Wordsworth and Samuel Taylor Coleridge s co publication of a collection of
poems called Lyrical Ballads initiated Romanticism, which featured themes of nature, individualism
and emotion. Wordsworth s works are representative of this era; they include ideas about personal
experience and emotion, as well as the influence of nature on man. He also used and advocated
simple language that any reader could comprehend. This radical form of literature influenced other
poets to write in a similar manner, creating a movement that forever changed poetry. Wordsworth s
ideas that prompted the Romantic Period were due to his upbringing and experiences as a student.
Born in the spring of 1770, Wordsworth grew up with four siblings in Englandalong the Derwent
River, exposing him early on to nature s beauty. He drew inspiration for his autobiographical poem,
The Prelude, from his schooling at Cockermouth, as well as from his education in Hawkshead,
where he and his brother attended school. He then attended Cambridge, using his experiences there
to note his changing ideas of his education in the third book of The Prelude. This movement... Show

Inequality In Afghanistan
This film was powerful. Illustrating many aspects of gender inequality in Afghanistan, this film

drastic of devices they have to resort to in order to live a life worth living. It was truly moving.
This film certainly changed my perception of what it is like to live in Afghanistanas a women. This
film changed this perception in two way. The first of which is that this film exposed me to the
rigor at which oppression is enforced particularly by the Taliban. I have always thought of the

The House by The Railroad
Edward Hopper is a renowned American painter. In the poem the house by the Railroad, he tries
to portray a picture of a house erected beside the railroad. This poem seems to bear a lot more
than what its simple title indicates. He has used the railroad to emphasize the rift between the
viewer s world and the picture space. The more one tries to penetrate the depths of his paintings,
the more difficult it becomes. Hopper s artistic vision was in line with his view of the
contemporary world and nature. This piece of art symbolizes loss that is felt when present progress
leaves behind an agrarian society the central theme being the Alienation of modern life.
In this picture, Victorian style house stands alone in the field. A railroad track cuts through the
foreground. There is a bare sky behind the house with no secondary objects in the immediate
surroundings of the building. this enables us to keenly focus on the articulation of the building and
its relationship with its environment.
This picture can be broken down into two basics: the house and the train line. However, this is not
really what Hopper is trying to convey to us. Life in this country is made of pure isolation in nature.
The presentation of the train cutting across the land conveys how the train serves those in the
country different from those in the city.
In the use of light to depict the mood of the situation, Hopper uses intense light

Write An Essay On The Dust Bowl
Imagine you lived during the time period where poor farming techniques were created, and dust
was being deposited or dropped into your lungs, forcing you to walk slowly down the steps of

the 1930 s. It was an event that occurred in the United States, where the area it was taken place did
not have moist soil, healthy crops, and a considerable amount of water. During this time, the soil
was poor, meaning there was a small amount of nutrients in it. From this, it caused the seeds being

All of these things were found by the Japanese to be incredibly rude and insulting and they took
the Europeans for barbarians. On the other hand, it was the Europeans who looked upon the
Japanese as backwards in their thinking. There were incredibly complex aspects of the country.
Samurais were known to test their swords on criminals by chopping their bodies to bits; casual
violence was no need for alarm here. There were subtle things like how they wore long strips of
silk draped around their bodies held only in place by a knotted rope; they tweezed the hairs from
their faces and wore their hair in oily buns on the tops of their heads. All of these differences
could have very well been the negative road block that would have stopped all progress in the
relations between the two civilisations. Alessandro Valignano was quick to recognise this potential
disaster. He ordered that his Jesuits live like natives to create harmony and understanding. He wrote
a manual for them to follow with all the behaviours this foreign country was built upon. He also
encouraged them to think and behave as though they were Japanese, to act with dignity and stoic
decorum . In turn, the Jesuits became accustom to the way of life of the Japanese, and found
themselves to be much more successful in their relationships with them. When William Adams

Production Tecniques In The Film Gattaca
i emmensly agree with the idea that a range of production tecniques in a film help the audience
understand the themes. An example of this would be Gattaca a movie by Andre Niccol, Gattaca is
a dystopian fiction movie which uses a range of production tecniques to help the audience
understand the themes of the movie. Production trcniques that are used in the movie include,
colour hues, symbolism and camera angles. Niccol uses symbolism to portray many themes in

this staircase represents the structure of DNA which in turn represents genetic identiy one of the
most major themes in the movie. There is a scene in the movie where jerome is struggling to reach
the topof the dna staircase. THis in turn symbolises many thing, such as VIncents struggle to climb

Bartleby The Scrivener, By Melville Essay
Melville s short story Bartleby the scrivener, describes the narrator as an elderly old man that
wishes to give details of the life of Bartleby the scrivener. Bartleby was a completely emotionless
human being who refuses to interact with the world around him. These actions shape the short
story, picking at its viewers mind as to why Bartlebyis disconnected from society. Bartleby worked
in the dead letters office this may have triggered his inability to relate to the world around him.
This motionless docility covered his inner troubles that he withheld from the world. The narrator
states I have known very many of them, professionally and privately, and if I pleased, could relate
divers histories, at which good natured gentlemen might smile, and sentimental souls might weep.
(Melville s). In this he means that many persons might choose to smile as they find pleasure in

Smooth Bore vs. Fog Nozzles
Old School: Smoothbore Nozzles in the Fire Service
The City of ______ Fire Department is in current discussion of using either smooth bore nozzle
versus combination nozzles in commercial structures. This conversation has been a topic within the
fire service since the introduction of the fog/combination nozzles in the 1960 s. Although there are
positives to both pieces of equipment, I believe that the department needs to make a decision on
which nozzle to use for a standard operating procedure and safety purposes.
To better understand the background of the contrasting views, we must look at how the fire service

Guess what happened? We got our tails burned every time from the heat, steam, and black nasty
garbage dropping down on us. The protective cone of water works great IF you are not in a
confined super heated atmosphere. Like for approaching a gas meter fire, or a car fire where the
heat can dissipate into the atmosphere. I think the best choice is having both types of nozzles
available and selecting the right one for the job. Either way, a smooth bore stream or a straight
stream from a combination nozzle is the best choice for interior work.
The department decided to investigate this particular topic to determine which nozzle would be
more beneficial when a firefighter is in a burning commercial structure. The smooth bore shoots
out more water per second but at a straight stream. The combination nozzle shoots out more water
droplets at a wider stream. Both processes are functional when putting out a fire. However, the
combination nozzle can act as a barrier or wall against flames and smoke because it shoots at such
a wide pattern. At the same time because the combination nozzle system shoots out water droplets,
the droplets produce steam. The steam that is now present is more harmful to firefighters, which
can be prevented by keeping the smooth bore nozzle in place. A direct attack method is designed
to extinguish the fire by applying water in a straight or solid stream to the base of the fire. This

Gregor Mendel Research Paper
Who is Gregor Mendel? Named father of genetics, Gregor Mendel was a scientist and Austrian
monk who was known for creating the science of genetics by using his garden as experiments.
Though Mendel s work was not fully recognized until after his death in 1884, his work is very
important in our world today.
Gregor Mendel was born in Heinzendorf bei Odrau, Austrian Empire on July 22, 1822. His birth
name was Johann Mendel, but later changed it to Gregor in 1843. Mendel lived in a farm with
his mother, Rosine ( Schwirthlich ) Mendel, his father, Anton Mendel, and his two sisters,
Veronica and Theresia Mendel. As a child, Mendel worked in an garden and studied beekeeping
which made him have a love for biological sciences. Later on in his life, Mendel

Traditional Learning Environment for Adults Learners Essay
Andragogy is based on a number of assumptions about the adult learner. The European...meaning
the art of science of helping adults learn, ... (Merriam, Caffarella Baumgartner, 2007, p. 84)
Adult learners need to have the ability to be self directed, to be accepted as a peer, to have their
experiences acknowledged, to have assistance and respect from the instructors, staff, and
colleagues. Adult students do not learn the same as younger students because experience and past
knowledge has formed a great wealth of wisdom in the adult s informational range. Adult learning
is in direct relation to the knowledge gained by the adult students. TRADITIONAL LEARNING

The problem was that the delivery of the lectures was monotone and lifeless. Imagine that you
are sitting through a lecture delivered by a computerized voice; not that the instructor was a
computer, that makes it impossible to take notes and keep focus. Due to the nature of the class
and this being a non interactive, online lecture, the instructor did not pause and had no
interruptions from the students. Note taking was virtually impossible, one for his thick
southern accent and the speed at which he spoke. ANDRAGOGY REFLECTION Self Directing
Had I had the option to enter into a self directed environment I would have been better prepared
to be a proactive learner instead of a reactive learner. (Merriam, Caffarella Baumgartner, 2007)
When I enrolled for this class I was excited about learning the history of the state in which I was
born, instead I cannot recall any important information from this class. To take an online class
also gave me the assumption that I would be responsible for my own learning. This did not hold
true because the information that I needed to retain was only heard during the lectures and not in
the literature in which I could have read and reread. I barely passed this class because I went in
thinking I would be held responsible for my learning and was thrown into a teacher oriented
educational setting. (Merriam, Caffarella Baumgartner, 2007) Experience

Whale Talk Reflection
The twists and turns of your life can be so unexpected, and that s a good thing to learn. Whale
talk is a story of a kid named T.J and some of his friends that go through a life of a teenager. In the
story Whale Talk by Chris Crutcher, people who have been through traumatic events cope with
challenges in their lives by overcoming, forgetting, or learning.
Forgetting is how some people cope with their traumatic events in life. Something that would be
hard to unsee is this traumatic because it would definitely make me feel extremely bad. This was a
terrible start to chapter 5 because these are real world problems. But somehow while the baby s
grandmother wasn t looking, the little boy crawled under the truck and got caught between the rear

In this part of the book, nobody would have ever guessed what was going to happen. T.J said that
he has felt this way before but this is different, They pound his chest, give him mouth to mouth,
hook him to the electronics, but dad is gone. (Crutcher 289) I would be really sad if any of my
friends or family died but you would just have to not do the same thing that T.J s dad did. T.J
will remember this because he saw it with his own eyes and it was his dad so he would not be
able to forget it. Anyone who saw this will most likely remember what happened on this very day,

  • 2. Barbarians at the Gate A Book Review Barbarians At The Gate The Fall of RJR Nabisco By Bryan Burrough and John Helyar Barbarians at the Gate has been called one of the most influential business books of all time the definitive account of the frenzy that overtook Wall Street in October and November of 1988 from the leveraged buyout of RJR Nabisco, Inc. by Kohlberg Kravis Roberts Co. for $24.9 billion. It was the largest takeover in Wall Street history. It was co written by Bryan Burrough and John Helyar, both journalists for the Wall Street Journal. They wrote a series of articles about the takeover attempt. In 1989, they obtained additional information for the book by doing over 100 interviews. They interviewed all the major people ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Although his control of the leveraged buyout was quickly usurped by the investment bankers and lawyers, he remained a central figure throughout the story. Shearson Lehman had pressed for the implementation of the normal gun to the head strategy, offering the board of directors a complete, fully financed bid and giving the board little alternative but to accept it. Johnson, believing that he had the board under control, had refused and the eager Shearson Lehman had reluctantly agreed. Largely because of the unprecedented size of the proposed leveraged buyout, the management Shearson Lehman group grossly underestimated the potential competition and assumed that it would be an uncontested takeover. The estimated $15.5 billion of bank financing necessary to complete the $17.6 billion buyout would use up approximately three fourths of the bank funds available worldwide for a single transaction (Burrough, 169). At first, in the bidding war to buy out RJR Nabisco, Johnson appeared to hold all the cards. He certainly believed so. He was convinced that the board would approve his offer because they needed him. He seems to have believed they liked him, too, and were his friends. But he had made many enemies on his climb up the corporate ladder, and several of these conspired in the end to deprive him of the ultimate prize in management, and hundreds of thousands of dollars in personal earnings. Unswayed by Johnson s veiled bribe an ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Battle Of Trenton Summary On December 16th, 1776, George Washington crossed the Delaware River and attacked the Hessian troops located in Trenton, New Jersey. It started when a Philadelphian, General Thomas Mifflin, rallied the militia because they were shamed by The American Crisis. By Christmas, Washington still barely had 6,000 troops fit for duty, knowing that he started getting reinforcements after the rally. Timing was important because if he waited, the enlistments would expire and the Delaware River would freeze. Finally, on Christmas night of 1776, the layer of ice covering the Delaware river cracked, allowing Washington and his troops to cross the river. This included 2,400 veteran troops and 18 cannons into Durham Boats. Many troops had to walk in the freezing cold grounds with their bare feet, leaving bloody footprints all around. Meanwhile, General James Ewing commanded 1,000 other troops nine miles above Trenton to block any retreating Hessians occupying Trenton. Originally, Colonel John Cadwalader was planned to cross the Delaware River, but he unfortunately never made it across through the bitter, cold water. Washington s plan was to depart at midnight, but due to the weather, it was delayed to 3 in the morning of the 26th.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Taking advantage of the situation, the American troops enclosed Trenton from all sides. Rall was making efforts to rally his men but was mortally wounded in action. At the end of the day, Trenton, along with prisoner and equipment, was finally in the hands of Washington. As a result of Ewing and Cadwalader s failures, Washington couldn t press the offensive on to Princeton and New Brunswick and withdraw back into Pennsylvania. Sonnet 130 however contrasts Sonnet 18 by instead of describing their subject as being beautiful they rather describing them as with imperfections and how they love that subject. Mitch Glaser presents his own testimony of how Isaiah 53 was useful in his own growth and testimony. He overviews some of the differing methods in which Isaiah 53 has been and is used in evangelism to Jewish people. Then he analyzes the polemical use from contemporary objections and responses to those objections to Isaiah 53. There is, however, one organization for education that is not fueled by government spending homeschool. Homeschoolingis a practice that is looked upon from the outside as alien simply for being different, and the stereotypical view that many hold of it is false. In fact, because of a lack of bad influences, the addition positive social effects, and outstanding academic performance, the case can be made that homeschooling is more beneficial than public schooling to students. The way that every child is started in homeschooling at a young age is because of their parents. In a survey of why parents decide to enter their children into homeschooling, 85.4 responded that it is because of a concern about the environment of other schools (Dumas 8). Things like drugs and alcohol are all accessible easily in public school from various vendors trying to get children hooked at young ages. By taking out the medium through which they transport their product, parents are removing their children from harms way. Another bad influence to children in public school is conformity. In the United States, football has become an essential part of Sunday plans to over 250 million people. While numerous people of all ages watch the sport, many people play it as well. This includes over one million high schoolers who participate in the sport at their schools. For many, football games are some of the most memorable high schoolmoments. However, football isn t all about the fans and school spirit; the players themselves face enormous risks just by stepping out on the field. Concussions and other health concerns have become more common than ever in football, especially with the youth. A concussionis a traumatic brain injury, and in sports, they are usually caused by an impact or blow to the head. These injuries leave a lasting impact and can greatly impact one s life. High school football is too dangerous in today s world due to the extensive and life threatening injuries that commonly occur in the sport. First and foremost, kids and teens are prone to getting concussions, and they can result in some short term effects. For example, they are the most notable injury found in young athletes. Out of kids 18 and under, about 1.1 1.9 million sports related concussions occur every year in the United States alone (Yang). In addition, there may be some symptoms that occur directly after the incident takes place. This includes headaches, blurred vision, and nausea. If someone faces excessive fatigue, sensitivity to light, and changes in sleep patterns, then there s a possibility that they have suffered from a concussion (Injuries). Although these short term effects can impact a person s daily life for a little while, the long term effects are detrimental. The first three terraces that Dante encounters are the terraces of the Proud, Envious, and Slothful. All three of these sins have in some way a perversion of love. The proud have perversions of love for self and instead have a contempt for their neighbors. Dante understands this after seeing that in order to cleanse this virtue they must be lowered to the ground so they are bowing to each other making them humble. The envious have a perversion of love of their own good which instead is the want of a neighbor s goods. Their eyes are shut and all they can hear are stories of generosity and mercy. • 25. The Axum Empire, Byzantine And Aztec Empires In many societies, the elites or aristocrats are given the chance to have a more luxurious life than everyone else. They are handed more political, economic and social power. Specifically in the Indian, Byzantine and Aztec empires, elites were allowed to have almost complete control over the people of the land. They are allowed to make, break and enforce rules to their discretion. The aristocrats were given respect, land, food, and care far superior to anyone else in the region. The Axum kingdom illustrated the potential of trade to boost economic development and support political development. Axum was originally a small kingdom whose merchants traded from the port of Adulis on the Red Sea. While Axumite merchants traded with Muslim merchants on a regular basis, they were challenged by Muslim forces. However, they were able to maintain independence and prosperity because of its large participation in trading routes of the Indian Ocean. The term caste refers to a social class of hereditary and usually unchangeable status. When the Aryans first implemented the caste system in India, they used the term varna, meaning color, to refer to major social classes. There were five main varnas: brahmins (priests); kshatriyas (warriors and aristocrats); vaishyas (cultivators, artisans, and merchants); shudras (landless peasants, and serfs); and untouchables (people who performed unpleasant tasks such as handling dead bodies or butchering animals). • 29. Three Years She Gew Research Paper The English Romantic Age, which lasted from the late 18th century to the middle of the 19th century, was born of the ideas of William Wordsworth, British poet and author. Many critics of this era believe that Wordsworth and Samuel Taylor Coleridge s co publication of a collection of poems called Lyrical Ballads initiated Romanticism, which featured themes of nature, individualism and emotion. Wordsworth s works are representative of this era; they include ideas about personal experience and emotion, as well as the influence of nature on man. He also used and advocated simple language that any reader could comprehend. This radical form of literature influenced other poets to write in a similar manner, creating a movement that forever changed poetry. Wordsworth s ideas that prompted the Romantic Period were due to his upbringing and experiences as a student. Born in the spring of 1770, Wordsworth grew up with four siblings in Englandalong the Derwent River, exposing him early on to nature s beauty. He drew inspiration for his autobiographical poem, The Prelude, from his schooling at Cockermouth, as well as from his education in Hawkshead, where he and his brother attended school. He then attended Cambridge, using his experiences there to note his changing ideas of his education in the third book of The Prelude. This movement... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the poem the house by the Railroad, he tries to portray a picture of a house erected beside the railroad. This poem seems to bear a lot more than what its simple title indicates. He has used the railroad to emphasize the rift between the viewer s world and the picture space. The more one tries to penetrate the depths of his paintings, the more difficult it becomes. Hopper s artistic vision was in line with his view of the contemporary world and nature. This piece of art symbolizes loss that is felt when present progress leaves behind an agrarian society the central theme being the Alienation of modern life. In this picture, Victorian style house stands alone in the field. A railroad track cuts through the foreground. There is a bare sky behind the house with no secondary objects in the immediate surroundings of the building. this enables us to keenly focus on the articulation of the building and its relationship with its environment. This picture can be broken down into two basics: the house and the train line. However, this is not really what Hopper is trying to convey to us. Life in this country is made of pure isolation in nature. The presentation of the train cutting across the land conveys how the train serves those in the country different from those in the city. On the other hand, it was the Europeans who looked upon the Japanese as backwards in their thinking. There were incredibly complex aspects of the country. Samurais were known to test their swords on criminals by chopping their bodies to bits; casual violence was no need for alarm here. There were subtle things like how they wore long strips of silk draped around their bodies held only in place by a knotted rope; they tweezed the hairs from their faces and wore their hair in oily buns on the tops of their heads. All of these differences could have very well been the negative road block that would have stopped all progress in the relations between the two civilisations. We got our tails burned every time from the heat, steam, and black nasty garbage dropping down on us. The protective cone of water works great IF you are not in a confined super heated atmosphere. Like for approaching a gas meter fire, or a car fire where the heat can dissipate into the atmosphere. I think the best choice is having both types of nozzles available and selecting the right one for the job. Either way, a smooth bore stream or a straight stream from a combination nozzle is the best choice for interior work. The department decided to investigate this particular topic to determine which nozzle would be more beneficial when a firefighter is in a burning commercial structure. The smooth bore shoots out more water per second but at a straight stream. The combination nozzle shoots out more water droplets at a wider stream. Both processes are functional when putting out a fire. However, the combination nozzle can act as a barrier or wall against flames and smoke because it shoots at such a wide pattern. At the same time because the combination nozzle system shoots out water droplets, the droplets produce steam. The steam that is now present is more harmful to firefighters, which can be prevented by keeping the smooth bore nozzle in place. A direct attack method is designed to extinguish the fire by applying water in a straight or solid stream to the base of the fire. This allows the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
