This document provides an overview of Chapter Five from Pope Francis' apostolic exhortation Gaudete et Exultate on the call to holiness in today's world. It discusses spiritual combat against evil forces through prayer, discernment, and vigilance. It emphasizes that discernment is needed to distinguish God's will from temptation. One must cultivate virtues through spiritual works and always remain in the light of the Lord through prayer. The Holy Spirit aids in discernment of God's timetable, which is never our own.

The French Revolution, which began in 1789, was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France. It marked the decline of absolute monarchies, the rise of secular and democratic republics, and the eventual rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. This revolutionary period is crucial in understanding the transition from feudalism to modernity in Europe.

Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.
June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202

2. Chapter Five
SPIRITUAL COMBAT,
VIGILANCE AND DISCERNMENT
Combat and vigilance [159]
More than a myth [160-161]
Alert and trustful [162-163]
Spiritual corruption [164-165]
Discernment [166]
An urgent need [167-168]
Always in the light of the Lord [169]
A supernatural gift [170-171]
Speak, Lord [172-173]
The logic of the gift and of the cross
[174-177]
3. We need strength and courage
to withstand the temptations of the devil
and to proclaim the Gospel.
GE 158
4. We are not dealing merely with a battle against
the world and a worldly mentality. GE 159
5. We are not dealing merely with a battle
against the world and a worldly mentality. GE 159
6. More than a myth
the conviction that this malign power is present in our midst
that enables us to understand how evil can at times
have so much destructive force.
7. Jesus taught us to ask daily for deliverance from him,
lest his power prevail over us. GE 160
8. we should not think of the devil as a myth,
a representation, a symbol, a figure of speech or an idea.
This mistake would lead us to let down our guard,
to grow careless and end up more vulnerable
9. He poisons us with the venom of hatred, desolation, envy and vice.
When we let down our guard, he takes advantage of it
to destroy our lives, our families and our communities. GE 161
10. Alert and trustful
For this spiritual combat, we can count on
the powerful weapons that the Lord has given us:
faith-filled prayer,
meditation on the word of God,
the celebration of Mass, Eucharistic adoration,
sacramental Reconciliation,
works of charity,
community life,
missionary outreach. GE 162
11. Along this journey, the cultivation of all that is good,
progress in the spiritual life and growth in love are
the best counterbalance to evil. GE 163
12. Spiritual corruption
Since they see nothing serious
to reproach themselves with,
they fail to realize that their spiritual life
has gradually turned lukewarm.
They end up weakened and corrupted. GE 164
13. Spiritual corruption is worse than the fall of a sinner,
for it is a comfortable and self-satisfied form of blindness.
Everything then appears acceptable: deception, slander, egotism
and other subtle forms of self-centredness, for
“even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light” 2 Co 11,14). GE 165
14. we ask with confidence that the Holy Spirit grant us this gift,
and then seek to develop it through prayer,
reflection, reading and good counsel. GE 166
Discernment
15. contemporary life offers immense possibilities for action and distraction,
and the world presents all of them as valid and good. GE 167
An urgent need
16. when some novelty presents itself in our lives.
Then we have to decide whether it is new wine brought by God
or an illusion created by the spirit
of this world or the spirit of the devil.
17. At other times, the opposite can happen,
when the forces of evil induce us not to change,
to leave things as they are, to opt for a rigid resistance to change.
Yet that would be to block the working of the Spirit.
18. We are free, with the freedom of Christ.
Still, he asks us to examine what is within us –
our desires, anxieties, fears and questions
19. and what takes place all around us –
“the signs of the times” – and thus to recognize
the paths that lead to complete freedom. GE 168
20. to help us recognize God’s timetable,
lest we fail to heed the promptings of his grace
and disregard his invitation to grow. GE 169
Always in the light of the Lord
21. A supernatural gift
spiritual discernment does not exclude
existential, psychological, sociological
or moral insights drawn from
the human sciences.
At the same time,
it transcends them.
GE 170
22. we simply cannot do without the silence of prolonged prayer,
which enables us better to perceive God’s language,
to interpret the real meaning of the inspirations
we believe we have received,
to calm our anxieties and
to see the whole of our existence
afresh in his own light. GE 171
23. Speak, Lord
prayerful discernment must be born of a readiness to listen:
to the Lord and to others, and to reality itself,
which always challenges us in new ways. GE 172
24. this attitude of listening
entails obedience to the Gospel
as the ultimate standard,
but also to the Magisterium
that guards it,
as we seek to find
in the treasury of the Church
whatever is most fruitful
for the “today” of salvation.
GE 173
25. discernment is a growing understanding
of God’s patience and his timetable,
which are never our own. GE 174
The logic of gift and of the cross
26. Discernment is not about discovering
what more we can get out of this life, but about
recognizing how we can better accomplish
the mission entrusted to us at our baptism.
This entails a readiness to make sacrifices,
even to sacrificing everything. GE 174
27. We need, though, to ask the Holy Spirit to liberate us
and to expel the fear that makes us ban him
from certain parts of our lives . GE 175
28. . Mary our Mother does not need a flood of words.
She does not need us to tell her
what is happening in our lives
29. All we need do is whisper,
time and time again: “Hail Mary…” GE 176
30. Let us ask the Holy Spirit to pour out upon us
a fervent longing to be saints
for God’s greater glory, and
let us encourage one another
in this effort. GE 177
