For Chicago Camps Prototypes, Process, and Play 2015 I describe the different types of design organizations I have seen and been a part of over the past 20 years. I also give examples of the pros and cons of each, and which organizational type I find works best for design within a large company.
The Campsite Rule - Leaving the Tech Industry Better Than We Found ItKristine Howard
Closing locknote delivered at the DDD Perth conference on September 16, 2017.
Improving the codebase for the next developer is a great goal, but what about making the industry better for the next generation? In this talk, Kris will debunk some of the damaging myths and ideas we’re all guilty of perpetuating, the ones that lead to stress and burnout. Fortunately there is an antidote - becoming a mentor! You’ll learn how you can change your own behaviour and thinking, be more supportive to those just starting out, and feel more engaged and inspired in your work - all with minimal effort. We all have a responsibility to make things just a little bit better for those who come after us.
I share how I got started in UX, along with debunking myths to become a UXer, and tips and resources to get started in one's UX career. This talk was presented at Ladies that UX Taipei on October 26, 2016.

Spark Entrepreneurs education organiseerde de eerste masterclass getting things Done met David Allen - 22 april 2015.
http://ScaleUpCompany.com/gtd-david-allen/
This deck is from the Designing for the Mind panel at SXSW 2015, organized by Roger Dooley, author of Brainfluence. Other panelists are Nathalie Nahai and Nir Eyal. It is a very brief introduction to why taking the way the human brain works is important for designers, followed by one example.
The example is how what psychologists call "cognitive fluency" can cause friction in surprising and apparently illogical ways. Choosing the wrong type font can make an action seem more difficult, and the way images are placed can affect credibility.

"Burn Down the Blocks! Sparking Collaboration Through Creative Play"WebVisions
There’s no shortage of inspirational mantras, but these sayings offer little advice to surmounting departmental silos, generational gulfs, intimidating power distances and other communication roadblocks that stymie creative collaboration in the workplace.
These barriers exist because the roles we play in a team environment provide us with a set of rules for interacting with each other. Ironically, these rules often prevent us from doing the very thing we’ve come together as a team to do: Collaborate!
In this session, Carolyn and Anna will discuss how to break the rules and transform those roadblocks into building blocks… freeing you and your team to live up to the mantra of your choice.
1/ Learn about common communication barriers; why they exist and how they hinder team innovation.
2/ Understand the value of design synthesis as a group activity, and how play is a central component to the co-creation dynamic.
3/ Explore a type of creative team play called a Spark-a-Thon. You’ve probably heard of the hack-a-thon, a fun and popular way to immerse yourself into a problem and solve it with code. What would happen if this format of time-limited, team-oriented creation was applied to design concepting? The answer: The Spark-a-Thon, which leads to bigger ideas and a stronger team problem-solving dynamic.
4/ Gain tips, tricks, and resources, so that you can go run your own Spark-a-Thon. You'll leave armed with some benefits and results you’ll glean from it, too - just in case you need to build an internal business case for it.
Necessity may be the mother of invention, but play is certainly the father. Join us to learn some serious play!

The College Advantage: Weathering the Economic StormCEW Georgetown
Many of the stories you've heard about the Great Recession often involve the plight of college graduates, or stories about how men and women have fared differently in the recession and recovery. The media have even created a new vocabulary to describe these differences, such as "Man-cession" and "Man-covery." But the evidence suggests that differences in education better explain how Americans have fared in these difficult economic times. In The College Advantage, we argue that college degrees have served as protection for Americans seeking shelter during a tough economic storm.

Development and Deployment: The Human FactorBoris Adryan
Thingmonk 2017: End-to-end IoT solutions are often highly integrated. Even small changes to the UX of a product can have profound impact on hardware requirements, while physical constraints such as battery capacity can dictate software architecture. A holistic understanding of IoT is key to efficient implementation, the “T-shaped engineer” the star in every development team. Contrast this to intellectual silos and matrix organisation, and you may see why especially large companies fail to move quickly into IoT. Similar issues strike the application of IoT. Deploying a solution in the enterprise is just a cost factor if processes are not adjusted to leverage the connected device and its data. However, changes in process often affect companies across their entire organisational structure. This can require a change of mindsets, making the success of an IoT solution depending on the human factor.

We all have good and bad thoughts from time to time and situation to situation. We are bombarded daily with spiraling thoughts(both negative and positive) creating all-consuming feel , making us difficult to manage with associated suffering. Good thoughts are like our Mob Signal (Positive thought) amidst noise(negative thought) in the atmosphere. Negative thoughts like noise outweigh positive thoughts. These thoughts often create unwanted confusion, trouble, stress and frustration in our mind as well as chaos in our physical world. Negative thoughts are also known as “distorted thinking”.
