- 2. Listening means attending to what you consider as important. It is trying to get the meaning of what you hear. To listen successfully to spoken language, you need to be able to work out what speakers mean when they use particular words.
- 3. TYPES OF LISTENING • 1. Marginal/Passive Listening – also called hearing or auding, the listener hears the sounds, often in the background but simply ignores them because he or she is engrossed in another task. • Example: Talking to your mother on the phone while checking facebook, texting a friend while watching TV
- 4. 2.Attentive Listening – the listener focuses attention and shows interest in what is being said. He or she takes note of the specifics and how they relate to the main points made by the speaker. Example: A meeting facilitator encouraging a quiet team member to share their views about a project, summarizing what has been discussed in a meeting/discussion
- 5. 3. Critical/Analytical Listening – in this type of listening, one has to decide on the truth of ideas, pass judgment on claims made and make decisions on whether to accept what he or she hears, reject it or take it. Example: Giving judgment based on the speaker’s arguments in a debate, seeking clarifications after a budget presentation
- 6. 4. Appreciative Listening – this type of listening gives the listener pleasure maybe from the humor, or blending of voices in choric manner Example: Describing how well the speaker chose and used words in the speech, reacting to the lyrics of a song listened to.
