Payroll Webinar: The A to Z of Payroll Garnishments Part 2Ascentis
Tax levies and creditor garnishments can be some of the most complex tasks required of any payroll department. Payroll must understand all the laws that apply towards processing these types of garnishments backwards and forwards. It is sometimes even up to the payroll department to catch and correct any errors that have been made by anyone else along the way!
Precise and accurate compliance with garnishment regulation can help to reduce or eliminate the emotional and financial toll that can result from these unfortunate situations as well stave off any penalties that may result if processed incorrectly.
This webinar concentrates on processing garnishments, other than child support, in the payroll department. We’ll cover the federal rules for creditor garnishments, the IRS rules for federal tax levies, the various aspects of state tax levies, the key points for processing state creditor garnishments, how to handle voluntary wage assignments like payday loans and student loans. And that’s not all – we’ll also review the IRS Form 668-W.

Many self-employed people will receive a grant through the new Self-Employed Income Support Scheme (SEISS) this month. These payments can be up to £7,500 and will be counted as earnings under Universal Credit.
As a result, lots of self-employed households will be affected by the complex 'surplus earnings' rules for the first time. In short, these rules mean that for many households, the SEISS money will be taken into account as earnings not just for the month it was received, but for future months as well.
Welfare advisors need to understand the rules, and need a tool that can calculate eligibility all in one place, in order to advise people what their Universal Credit payments will be, and when they need to reclaim.
Hear from Sue McCarron from Citizens Advice Wirral who shared how frontline staff have supported customers facing with fluctuating income using the Benefit and Budgeting Calculator.

Why now is the best time to bring your payroll in-house
With furlough and the constant payroll legislation changes now thankfully behind us, now is the perfect time to consider bring your payroll operations in-house. After the turbulence of the last two years, many businesses will be looking for ways to cut down on costs and build back lost revenue. Taking care of your payroll yourself rather than outsourcing to a an accountant or bookkeeper is a smart way of doing this.
In this webinar we will weigh up the pros and cons of bringing your payroll in-house to do it yourself versus your accountant doing your payroll for you. We will also explore what you need to look out for in payroll software, both to maximise these benefits and to make the transition as smooth as possible. Towards the end of the webinar, we will give you a short tour of BrightPay to introduce you to the world of payroll, and practical guidance on how to implement it. We will also be answering some questions from our audience.

Traditionally, many accountants would say that offering payroll as a service is not necessarily cost-effective and that it can be a time-consuming and tedious process. But this doesn’t need to be the case.

Employers need to prepare for IR35 reforms which are being introduced in the private sector this April. Like the public sector, clients will have to determine whether the contractor falls inside or outside IR35. There is a right way and a wrong way to comply with IR35 rules. During this webinar, Jas Jhooty, Director at emTax, will explore the steps that need to be taken to obtain ‘outside IR35’ SDS rulings for as many contractors as possible. Although payroll as a service has remained the same, some things have changed, too. The relationship between client and professional is no longer one-directional. Payroll services can - and should - be a team effort. Gone are the days of payroll bureaus continuously slogging through manual processes and the frustration of clients who approach their payroll services provider with every minor tweak.
In its place is a new collaborative framework in which the payroll professional can thrive; where cloud innovation streamlines, automates and delegates the day-to-day tasks such as annual leave management, payslip distribution and backing up your payroll. That’s more time to focus on the essentials and provide better service.

All organisations, regardless of size, will have had to introduce or update existing policies regarding personal data in order to comply with the new regulations.
This webinar will look at the GDPR, how it may affect your business and what we have learned from the GDPR 5 months on. We will also have a look at how BrightPay can help your organisation utilise the new regulations for the benefit of you, your customers and youremployees.
Essentially, GDPR is an overhaul of the way we process, manage and store individual’s personal data, and that includes your employee’s personal payroll and HR information. We will take you through the impact of GDPR on your payroll processing, highlighting the biggest areas of concern including emailing payslips, employee consent and your legal obligations with regards to payroll, HR and Employment law.
The webinar will include a demonstration of how our BrightPay Connect add-on can help you work towards GDPR compliance by offering remote online access to accountants, employers and employees. We will take a brief look at our Bright Contracts software, which as well as providing the user with the facility to create and customise Contracts of Employment and Company Handbooks, now has a new feature which enables the user to create an Employee Privacy Policy which is a requirement under GDPR.
We will also unveil our new timesheet rapid input feature. Our exciting new timesheet feature directly connects to the BrightPay payroll and allows clients to import timesheet hours from a CSV or directly input hours for each employee on the BrightPay connect employer dashboard. For accountants and payroll bureaus, clients can easily use the timesheet upload for rapid input of employee’s hours eliminating possible errors. The timesheet feature also allows bureaus to easily run the payroll before sending it back to your payroll client for final approval and validation.

Providing Globus Services to Users of JASMIN for Environmental Data AnalysisGlobus
JASMIN is the UK’s high-performance data analysis platform for environmental science, operated by STFC on behalf of the UK Natural Environment Research Council (NERC). In addition to its role in hosting the CEDA Archive (NERC’s long-term repository for climate, atmospheric science & Earth observation data in the UK), JASMIN provides a collaborative platform to a community of around 2,000 scientists in the UK and beyond, providing nearly 400 environmental science projects with working space, compute resources and tools to facilitate their work. High-performance data transfer into and out of JASMIN has always been a key feature, with many scientists bringing model outputs from supercomputers elsewhere in the UK, to analyse against observational or other model data in the CEDA Archive. A growing number of JASMIN users are now realising the benefits of using the Globus service to provide reliable and efficient data movement and other tasks in this and other contexts. Further use cases involve long-distance (intercontinental) transfers to and from JASMIN, and collecting results from a mobile atmospheric radar system, pushing data to JASMIN via a lightweight Globus deployment. We provide details of how Globus fits into our current infrastructure, our experience of the recent migration to GCSv5.4, and of our interest in developing use of the wider ecosystem of Globus services for the benefit of our user community.

Why React Native as a Strategic Advantage for Startup Innovation.pdfayushiqss
Do you know that React Native is being increasingly adopted by startups as well as big companies in the mobile app development industry? Big names like Facebook, Instagram, and Pinterest have already integrated this robust open-source framework.
In fact, according to a report by Statista, the number of React Native developers has been steadily increasing over the years, reaching an estimated 1.9 million by the end of 2024. This means that the demand for this framework in the job market has been growing making it a valuable skill.
But what makes React Native so popular for mobile application development? It offers excellent cross-platform capabilities among other benefits. This way, with React Native, developers can write code once and run it on both iOS and Android devices thus saving time and resources leading to shorter development cycles hence faster time-to-market for your app.
Let’s take the example of a startup, which wanted to release their app on both iOS and Android at once. Through the use of React Native they managed to create an app and bring it into the market within a very short period. This helped them gain an advantage over their competitors because they had access to a large user base who were able to generate revenue quickly for them.
Developing Distributed High-performance Computing Capabilities of an Open Sci...Globus
COVID-19 had an unprecedented impact on scientific collaboration. The pandemic and its broad response from the scientific community has forged new relationships among public health practitioners, mathematical modelers, and scientific computing specialists, while revealing critical gaps in exploiting advanced computing systems to support urgent decision making. Informed by our team’s work in applying high-performance computing in support of public health decision makers during the COVID-19 pandemic, we present how Globus technologies are enabling the development of an open science platform for robust epidemic analysis, with the goal of collaborative, secure, distributed, on-demand, and fast time-to-solution analyses to support public health.
Globus Compute wth IRI Workflows - GlobusWorld 2024Globus
As part of the DOE Integrated Research Infrastructure (IRI) program, NERSC at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab and ALCF at Argonne National Lab are working closely with General Atomics on accelerating the computing requirements of the DIII-D experiment. As part of the work the team is investigating ways to speedup the time to solution for many different parts of the DIII-D workflow including how they run jobs on HPC systems. One of these routes is looking at Globus Compute as a way to replace the current method for managing tasks and we describe a brief proof of concept showing how Globus Compute could help to schedule jobs and be a tool to connect compute at different facilities.

Redundancies, Vaccinations & the Workplace
ACAS - Redundancy related calls increased
by 160% in past two months
Redundancies
on the Rise
December 2020 to February 2021:
204,000 Redundancies
Redundancies accelerated at the fastest
pace since the financial crisis
November 2020 to January 2021:
308,000 Redundancies
Two key initial
considerations
Two key initial considerations when
making an employee redundant:
Obligation to behave reasonably in
order to avoid unfairly dismissing an
employee
Must consult employees if making 20
or more employees redundant
(collective redundancy)
The Redundancy
Process
Avoid compulsory redundancies –
voluntary redundancy, short-time work etc.
Carry out a consultation –
speak to every employee individually
Selecting staff for redundancy –
use fair and objective criteria
Notice of redundancy
Redundancy pay
Support your staff – be available to take questions
& support employees

Statutory
Notice Periods
Statutory redundancy notice periods:
At least one week’s notice if employed
between one month and 2 years
One week’s notice for each year if
employed between 2 and 12 years
12 weeks’ notice if employed for 12 years
or more
Employees must be given a notice period
before their employment ends
Contractual vs.
Statutory Notice
Where contractual notice is greater than
statutory notice, contractual notice will
apply
Advised to check employment contracts –
contractual notice and statutory notice
may differ
Where contractual notice is less,
statutory notice will apply
Statutory
Notice Pay
If notice period in the contract is the same
or less than statutory notice, 100% of
employees' normal pay should be paid
during the notice period
Employees entitled to be paid in full for
their notice pay
Furloughed employees on notice period
must be topped up to 100% pay
Contractual
Notice Pay
When not working - receive what they would
normally be paid for that absence
Contractual notice greater than statutory
notice by at least one week
Employee must receive normal full pay as
long as they are working
Furloughed employees may be paid at
80% for their notice period
9. Furlough Wind-Down: Key changes to the CJRS from July 16th June 2021
9
How to Pay
Notice Pay
You cannot claim CJRS whilst an
employee is on notice
Option 1: Retain the employee on the
payroll and continue to pay them through
their notice period
Payments in lieu of notice cannot be
claimed under CJRS
Option 2: Pay employees in lieu of notice
(payment is still subject to tax and National
Insurance)
Calculating
Redundancy Pay
Statutory Redundancy Pay:
Half a week’s pay for each full year
worked under 22 years old
One week’s pay for each full year
worked when 22 or older, but under
41 years old
One and half week’s pay for each full
year worked when 41 years old or
older
Calculating
Redundancy Pay
Weeks pay capped at £544 & maximum
statutory redundancy capped at £16,320
Average pay should be calculated using 12
weeks before notice given
Redundancy pay – capped with a length of
service being 20 years
Redundancy pay under £30,000 is not
taxable
Redundancy Pay &
Furlough
Typically, average weekly pay is based on
the 12 week average up to when the
employee is notified
Redundancy pay for furloughed
employees must be calculated on their
normal pay
The 12-week reference for furloughed
employees must be treated as if they were
working full time on 100% pay

Vaccine Policy Common Questions
Can you ask an
employee if they have
been vaccinated?
Can you insist that
an employee be
vaccinated?
What can the
