The cell membrane provides protection to the cell and regulates what passes in and out through selective permeability. There are three main types of permeability - diffusion which is the passive movement of molecules from high to low concentration, osmosis which is the movement of solvent molecules from low to high concentration, and active transport which requires energy and includes phagocytosis which is the engulfing of large particles and pinocytosis which is the uptake of fluid. The cell membrane controls these processes to allow the cell to function properly.
