This document is Amber Holdsworth's Master's thesis which examines wavelet analysis and its application to epidemiological time series data. The thesis has two main parts: 1) an exposition of wavelet transforms, tools for time series analysis including wavelet denoising, power spectra, and multifractal analysis and 2) applying wavelet analysis to epidemiological data sets, focusing on measles incidence in Ontario. Wavelet analysis is shown to be useful for evaluating mathematical models in epidemiology by comparing models to observed data and characterizing the fine structure of epidemiological time series data.
