WP5 aims to develop tools to determine novel traits in apple and peach, investigate complex traits using 'omics' approaches and modeling, and make trait analysis high-throughput. It will select cultivars to study trait variation, develop quantification protocols, and standardize methods for large-scale phenotyping. Specific tasks include developing tests for Monilinia resistance in peach, tools to assess texture and fiber content in apple, and tests to evaluate responses to chilling, heat, and water scarcity requirements for climate change adaptation. Results will provide knowledge of genetics underlying novel traits and validate tools on contrasting cultivars.
