Vladimir Putin was born in 1952 in Leningrad, now St. Petersburg, Russia. He studied law and joined the KGB after university, serving as a KGB agent in East Germany from 1985-1990. Putin was elected president of Russia in 2000 and 2004, then became prime minister in 2008 after Dmitry Medvedev's election. Putin then won a third term as president in 2012.
