• Approximately 220 soldiers with Central Coast
connections have been identified as having died
in WWI.
• For each of these soldiers an individual online
dossier typically includes...
• the soldiers’ war history
• the circumstances of their death
• contemporary newspaper articles about the
death of a soldier
• photographs where available
• Each online dossier can easily be viewed,
searched, enlarged and shared.

7. Soldiers’ Letters from the Battlefields

• Many Central Coast men wrote surprisingly
frank and graphic letters home from WWI to
their families and friends. A very large number
of these letters were published in The Gosford
Times newspaper.
• The letters provide moving insights into the
feelings and experiences of the average
soldier.
• These transcribed letters are presented in an
easy to use online “book”. The letter writer’s
local connection is identified e.g.: Gosford and
Narara, NSW.
•These soldiers’ letters can be easily viewed,
searched, enlarged and shared.

8. For King and Country

• Identifies men with Central Coast connections
(those born or who lived in the district upon
enlistment) who went to WWI and includes soldiers
from the area bounded by the Hawkesbury River in
the south, to Catherine Hill Bay in the north.
• Each soldier is identified, along with their local
connection e.g. Erina, Terrigal.
• Each entry typically includes a summary of war
service, date of enlistment, names of next-of-kin, fate
of the soldier and contemporary newspaper reports.
• Each online volume can easily be viewed,
searched, enlarged and shared.

• A very recent and welcome addition to
the From Anzac to Armistice resources.
• Gosford man James Dunlop Kirkness
joined the Australian Military & Naval
expedition to New Britain in August 1914.
• Kirkness descendant Carmen Coutts-
Smith has transcribed this very rare diary
recounting some of Australia’s first actions
in WWI.
• Diary is made available online courtesy
of Carmen and can be easily read,
searched, enlarged and shared.
