Babe Didrikson Zaharias was born in 1903 in New Heaven, Connecticut and died in 1989 in Gulf Stream, Florida. She was married in 1931 and had two children. As a young girl, she played baseball but switched to golf at age 13 as her mother felt it was more appropriate for girls. Zaharias dominated women's golf in the 1920s, winning 49 tournaments and authoring two books on golf. Her enduring legacy includes holding the record for six U.S. Women's Amateur titles at a time when professional women's golf did not exist. She was inducted into the Women's Golf Hall of Fame.
