The document provides information about researching soldiers from World War I and World War II who served from the Bassendean area in Western Australia. It outlines the process of identifying service numbers, searching military records, finding information on casualties, and examples of how to apply this research to local history projects like creating online tributes and history walks. Sources mentioned include the Australian War Memorial, National Archives of Australia, Commonwealth War Graves Commission, Trove, and Ancestry.
This power point presentation is all about the 100th anniversary of World War One and how libraries and other community organizations can get involved in the events surrounding it.
These are a few slides I prepared for a Toastmasters "Thought of the Day" speech, which is a 2-3 minute introduction to the weekly meeting's theme. This week, our theme was "Helping Neighbors" (inspired by the recent Neighbors Make The Difference Day).
Presentation for the Moose Jaw Genealogical Society on April 28, 2015. The presentation looks at what are military records, where to look for them, and how to look for additional records to provide context for the military service/personnel files.
Our expert Amy Johnson Crow talks about honoring the military members in your family tree by doing a little bit of digging into military burials and headstones.
This was presented as part of Reference @ the Metcalfe, the annual reference and information services seminar, organised by the NSW Reference and Information Services Group, and the State Library of NSW.
This was one of the 10 slides in 5 minutes talks.
The meaning of the First World War in the community Camden NSW raises different questions for different people. The presentation examines the meaning behind the war effort, overseas, at home and today. The representation of the war in the contemporary world has a variety of interpretations from sacrifice to commodification. What the war represents 100 years on it still controversial. The story of Camden and the Great War is very complex. It is not black and white and has many shades of grey. Each layer means different things to different people.
From 1914 to 1918, nearly 630, 000 Canadian men and women served in the First World War, which claimed over 60, 000 lives. This presentation discusses key facts about the war, where to look for Canadian military records, and offer research tips for those studying ancestors who served in the conflict.

Russian anarchist and anti-war movement in the third year of full-scale warAntti Rautiainen
Anarchist group ANA Regensburg hosted my online-presentation on 16th of May 2024, in which I discussed tactics of anti-war activism in Russia, and reasons why the anti-war movement has not been able to make an impact to change the course of events yet. Cases of anarchists repressed for anti-war activities are presented, as well as strategies of support for political prisoners, and modest successes in supporting their struggles.

3. History of the Library
Bassendean Memorial Library
opened its doors to the public for the
first time on 2 July 1972. It was built
at 46 Old Perth Road, on the
previous site of the War Memorial.
The inclusion of the word 'memorial'
in the name of the institution,
acknowledges the community's co-
operation in allowing the memorial
to be moved, thus ensuring that the
Library would be within the civic
precinct and centrally located for the
whole community.
4. Bassendean
The suburb name changed from
West Guildford to Bassendean in
1922.
Bassendean is a place in Scotland
and the ancestral estate of Hon.
Peter Broun, first Colonial
Secretary of the Swan River
Colony and a local resident.
5. Bassendean War Memorial
• The memorial contains names of those who fought and fell (Face A) and those
who returned (Face B, C, D).
• Many soldiers were born elsewhere but enlisted in West Guildford.
• Many of the soldiers listed are related to others on the memorial, the result of
high patriotism and a small community.
• Many soldiers received gallantry awards and were Mentioned in Despatches.
• Ten names of soldiers which could be on this memorial are on a neighbouring
memorial at Guildford.
• Many soldiers from this district enlisted in both WWl and WWll
• Monument makers were unknown and were identified using Trove newspaper
articles and AIF Project service summary information. The ex-servicemen made
other local memorials in nearby local governments.
