Dutch Minister Schultz van Haegen wants to put the Netherlands on the world map with unmanned trucks. That is good news for the European transport sector. Unfortunately, Europe isn't exactly ready for unmanned trucks.
The current spatial planning is a problem. Platoons of three or four unmanned trucks will soon be transporting large volumes according to a timetable across vast European transport corridors in the TEN-T network. This will demand more horizontal collaboration between companies, with control towers directing the transport flows.
Each of the nodes in the TEN-T network will need to have a large-scale distribution park where shippers and carriers can bundle and unbundle their transport flows. The problem is: there is hardly any room for such large-scale distribution parks.
The unmanned trucks will be driving across borders. Not only the hard technology on board, also the soft information technology for directing transport flows needs to be standardized at the European level. But also: who owns all that big data that the trucks and the local road authorities collect regarding the transport flows? Open data need to be truly open to everyone. The traffic laws and rules of play and the qualifications required of professional drivers in the various European countries need to be synchronized. The borders between countries cannot be borders for transport.
Autonomous driving will fundamentally change the European market for long-distance transport. Logistics service providers will need to adapt their strategy towards operational excellence at the Champions League level in terms of the planning, execution and financing of their European transport networks. They may encounter competition from unexpected sources. What is keeping Scania from organising its own European transport network if drivers are no longer necessary?
Trucks are becoming high-tech command centers. They communicate with traffic managers via intelligent transport systems (ITS) in order to make optimal use of the infrastructure. This means much more responsibility for the highly trained driver – comparable to that of a pilot of a Boeing jet. The sector needs to get started with training the drivers of the future using first-rate driving simulators.
The deployment of unmanned trucks will demand collaboration between carriers and shippers, room for distribution parks in the TEN-T network, open and transparent data, the best drivers and a European policy for road safety. Only then will the logistics sector stand to benefit from this innovation.

During the past decade an essential progress in South-East Europe has been observed. However it still faces many challenges related to the resource effciency, high energy intensity, energy independence and security, CO2 emissions. These issues are influenced by the choice of technologies, policy, consumption and production models.
The 11th South-East European Forum and Exhibitions on Energy Effciency, Renewables and Smart Cities will be held from 11 to 13 March 2015, in Sofia, Bulgaria. Taking the key role of the sustainable development into account, the event will facilitate the
technology and knowledge transfer to the Region, as well as the dialogue between all value chain players. The Exhibition is an interaction hub for new product exposure and establishing company alliances to generate joint business projects.
Funding mechanisms and good examples will be among the highlights in the Conference program in which keynote speakers
from European institutions and organizations will take part.

Opening presentation of Frevue conference in Amsterdam October 2016. FREVUE provides evidence on how innovative solutions using electric freight vehicles can help to achieve emission free city logistics.

Changing distribution channels will impact future European transport- and distribution network; customer require precision guided logistics. At the same time the completion of the European TEN-T network, the introduction of platooning and autonomous driving on the European roads and robotization in distribution centers will reshape European distribution networks in the next 10 years.
What challenges will these trends bring to the logistics industry? And, what are profitable roadmaps for transportation companies towards 2020-2025?

Fast, fresh, in full and forecastable
Dutch retailers have lead the way for innovation in European supply chains. What lessons can be learned from Dutch retailers in distribution and transportation, planning and control and supply chain collaboration? What role did logistics service providers play in realising innovation?
ICT is the proverbial level playing field today. Every company in the logistics industry now has access to the same standard software. Does that eliminate the need for a CIO? During the Amsterdam Logistics CIO Forum in November 17-18 we'll discuss turning data into value for supply chain and logistics and the future role of the CIO.
Urban logistics activities are expected to grow by 8% a year in Europe through to 2030. Deliveries of goods already account for 20% of all traffic and for 30% of pollution in our cities, and flows are continuing to increase.
As our society comes to demand ever more immediacy, deliveries in urban areas present a major and increasingly complex challenge for logistics actors: while some consumers prefer more eco-friendly deliveries, others wish to support their local shops, deliveries in urban areas contribute to traffic jams, pollution and noise disturbance, and the COVID-19 pandemic has given a boost to online shopping.
Solutions to the economic and environmental challenges of urban logistics include investments in new technologies, such as artificial intelligence or blockchain, enhanced collaboration between the various actors in the ecosystem, private and public alike, and reflection on the organization of logistics facilities.

October 2023: the future of light electric freight vehicles (LEFVs) in city logistics.
Presentation for VREF by Walther Ploos van Amstel, professor in city logistics at AUAS.
Walther Ploos van Amstel (professor at AUAS) about the future in city logistics. Will it be unmanned? What is the impact of city hubs? And, will zero emission zones deliver impact?
Reflecting on Home delivery myths:
Home deliveries are killing our cities
The streets are full with delivery vans
Pick-up points and cargo bikes are the ultimate solution
E-commerce is not sustainable
We need an Amazon tax

Walther Ploos van Amstel (AUAS) during Utech conference: Logistics eats circular supply chains for breakfast. The future in chemical circular supply chains.

Implicitly or explicitly all competing businesses employ a strategy to select a mix
of marketing resources. Formulating such competitive strategies fundamentally
involves recognizing relationships between elements of the marketing mix (e.g.,
price and product quality), as well as assessing competitive and market conditions
(i.e., industry structure in the language of economics).
