Northwestern University and the University of Denver failed to acknowledge their co-founder John Evans' involvement in the Sand Creek Massacre for many years. After pressure from students and community members near the 150th anniversary of the event, both universities finally issued reports on the Sand Creek Massacre. Although Chicago has a large Native American population, less than 0.5% of Northwestern University's staff, faculty and students are Native American.
