Free and open source software (FOSS) allows users full freedom to run, study, modify, and share software. FOSS provides more freedom and flexibility than proprietary software at a lower cost. While FOSS is free to acquire, organizations should consider support from local service providers and ensure the software meets their performance and functionality needs. Gartner predicts that by 2009 every organization will use FOSS and by 2012, 80% of commercial software will be FOSS. The document discusses FOSS and provides examples of Norwegian companies that use FOSS successfully.
