Verbal and non-verbal communication can take many forms. Verbal communication includes both oral communication (spoken words) and written communication (words on paper). Oral communication occurs through informal conversations, interviews, speeches and presentations. Written communication occurs through letters, reports, forms and other written documents. Non-verbal communication conveys meaning through signs, body language, and other means besides words. Sign language and symbols are one form of non-verbal communication, while gestures, facial expressions and other body language are also important in conveying meaning without words. Both verbal and non-verbal forms of communication have advantages and disadvantages depending on the situation and message being communicated.
