The problem of wasteland has become a serious issue and it has increased with the development of technology for increasing the agricultural production (Swaminathan, 1997). The natural disturbances including the man-made problems, i.e. industrialization and urbanization, contribute to increasing trend of wastelands in various ways. The requirement by the increasing human population and cattle population and also the natural disasters cause the loss of natural resources and land degradation (Hegde, 1993).According to Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO, 1992), the various forms of land degradation such as soil erosion, chemical poisoning, stalinization and loss through building or mining is of 5 to 7 million hectares from good cultivable lands

The Pondoland centre of endemism is the smallest and perhaps the most vulnerable in South Africa. Its importance has been globally recognized by its inclusion within Conservation Internationals Maputu-Pondoland- Albany hotspot.
The Wild Coast Project, a GEF funded initiative, administered by the ECPBT aims to establish a representative network of co managed protected areas across the Pondoland center and within the Wild Coast. A number of case studies are used to examine the key threats, systemic relationships between these, and the drivers of landscape change on the Wild Coast. In light of this, the question is asked: how effective the proposed community protected areas will be to ensure persistence of biodiversity on the Wild Coast?
The case studies include a number of ecosystems, including mangrove estuaries, scarp forests, and the grasslands /thorn veld/forest mosaic. Case studies are the result of numerous site visits, literature reviews, discussion with locals, and GIS analysis of past areal and satellite imagery.
The case studies reveal the essential paradox of conservation in communal areas, like the Wild Coast. On the one hand, the human footprint and level of transformation appears to be relatively low when compared to the highly transformed landscapes of commercial agriculture; but on the other hand, closer inspection and analysis of landscape and associated environment changes, reveals highly dynamic and vulnerable systems showing the signs of an ‘environmental meltdown’. This threatens not only the livelihoods of many depended on natural resources, but also the irreplaceable biodiversity associated with these areas.

Forests once covered a much greater area than they do today. The map shows where forests could potentially grow today, based on global climate and soils data combined with WWF’s map of Terrestrial Ecoregions of the World.
There are various techniques that can be proposed to recover or improve the present quality of these ecosystems mainly rangelands (Galbally et al., 1992).. Nevertheless, ordinary management can only provide temporary solutions, because the number of people living on the produce of the rangelands is increasing almost everywhere, as is the number of their livestock. More comprehensive solutions will be necessary to preserve some of the rangelands, including an effective diversification of the forage resources and land use. Above all, it is essential to aim at the entire diversification of the local economies and their integration within a global perspective (Glenn et al., 1992)
A closer look at wasteland and their reclamationSagar Chaudhary
The reclamation of wasteland and development measures in general includes land clearing, soil and water conservation, enhancing nutrient status, provision of irrigation facilities and so on. However, the existing status of wastelands shows wide variation across different regions of the country in terms of their suitability for cultivation. Therefore, it is necessary to carry out a scientific assessment of the existing status; fertility, erosion levels, soil conditions, water potential, suitable cropping system, etc. of the waste lands spread over different agro-climatic zones of the state so as to prepare a realistic reclamation-cum-development plan for the wastelands. Thus rehabilitation of the wasteland through the sustainable management serves as a better cover to the soil and aids regeneration of forests.

The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.
