This document discusses Endress+Hauser solutions for process measurement challenges in the food and beverage industry. It describes how Endress+Hauser helped a contract manufacturer of aseptic products called Steuben Foods identify sources of product loss by using a Coriolis mass flow meter mounted on a cart. It also discusses using level measurement, overfill protection, and flow measurement solutions to simplify process measurements for applications like ice cream production and storage tank management. The document promotes Endress+Hauser's innovative instrumentation as being well-suited for the stringent safety and reliability requirements of the food and beverage industry.

Single-pass TFF is a new way to use an existing technology.
The product feed is constantly concentrated during a single
pass through serialized TFF device up to the targeted final
concentration. A recirculation loop is not required, simplifying
hardware settings and reducing hold up volume and footprint.
This allows higher product recovery while reducing the risk
of product damage associated with traditional recirculation.
Single-pass TFF is also a convenient way to reduce volumes,
helping to eliminate tank bottlenecks.
In this poster we will highlight a mAb case study, where SPTFF
is applied to overcome these challenges.

In a recent paper that appeared in the September-October 2013 issue of our sister publication, Grain & Feed Milling Technology magazine, we highlighted the challenges facing feedmills in terms of direct losses associated with moisture and product waste, and the new technologies that provide direct solutions to these problems. Our attention now turns to aqua feedmills, where although the process flow is similar there are unique differences, particularly relating to physical quality parameters and the impact of drying product that make the utilisation of these new technologies even more exciting.

Simple and cost-effective solutions end frustration.
Steuben Foods, Inc. is a contract manufacturer of
aseptic products. The range of products runs from
organic milk to soy milk to soup broth, coffee
concentrates and nutriceuticals.
As with all manufacturing plants, product yield is
extremely important, but this is especially critical for a
contract manufacturer. Steuben Foods assembled a loss
improvement team to determine where product losses
occur within the production facility. The team decided
that in order to determine where losses are occurring;
you must first have reliable data.

The first immediate result was the discovery that the
truck scales used for incoming supply were inaccurate.

Innovative straight-tube Coriolis flow meter designed to
drain to the last drop.
The straight, single tube PROline Promass I
sensor has proven itself to be ideally suited for
density measurement of ice cream.
Endress+Hauser became involved in a test with one
ice cream manufacturer who wanted to automate the
overrun measurement to determine the amount of air
in the ice cream. This overrun was being determined
manually—using an off–line density measurement at
ambient pressure.
When Endress+Hauser became involved, the goal was

5. Achieve higher accuracy and repeatability
The versatile Promag 50/53H is designed to fit sanitary
process measurement needs.
The PROline® Promag 50/53H electromagnetic
flow measuring system has been designed to
meet the sanitary requirements of the food and
beverage industry, specifically cleanability.
The internal diameter of the Promag’s flow tube
matches sanitary tubing industrial standard (OD tubing)
dimension. As a result, there is no step change between
the flow tube and piping. A crevice free connection
between the flow tube and the process connection is
made possible by the Promag’s sanitary gasket design
Typical applications for Promag include blending,
batch control, filling operations and CIP control. The
batching function eliminates the need for a separate
batch controller. The Promag meets the PMO require-
ments for timing pump replacement making it ideal
for meter–based pasteurization control. Promag’s high
sampling rates means higher accuracy and repeatability
when used for small batching and filling applications.
